Description
PATENTED NOV. 6, 1860.
G. 0. HINMAN.
WATER GLOSBT SEAT.
&EJ
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE C. HINMAN, OF PORTAGEVILLE, NEW YORK.
SEAT OF WATER-CLOSETS.
Specficaton of Letters Patent No. 30,574, dated November 6, 1860.
To cZZ whom 'it may concem:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. HINMAN, of Portageville, VVyoming County, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVatenCloset Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. H is a plan of the same. Fig. III is a side elevation of the samethe elevating seat being shown in the position it assumes when not in use.
The nature of my invention relates to the application and use of a movable seat, for water closets, which is to be brought into place and used for purposes of stool, (as requirech) but which is to be removed or elevated from the stationary seat automaticallv, when a person rises from it after evacuation.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A, represents a stationary horizontal seat ot' ordinary construction.
B, is a movable seat, which is used upon, or in combination with the stationary seat (A). It may be hinged at its back edge, to the stationary seat as represented at J (or otherwise), or it may be used without any hinge,-or it may be hinged and used without any mechanical means for elevating it,-- my object being to provide a removable or elevating seat, which must be brought into place upon the stationary seat, to be used forpurposes of stool, but which is to be immediately removed, or elevated into a perpendicular position, when a person rises, after evacuation, so as to insure a clean and comfortable seat at all times, for purposes of stool.
In order to make my improved seat self elevating, I have provided a cord, C, which is connected to the seat at (K), and pulley D, and weight E, so that as soon as a person rises from the seat, the weight, E, in connection with the cord and pulley will raise the seat (B) into the perpendicular position shown in Fig. III. It will remain in this position when not immediately in use, so that a male person entering the closet hurriedly to urinate, will have no occasion to lower it into the horizontal position. It will therefore remain up and out of the way, so that it will not become soiled by dripping urine upon it.
Careless and indifterent persons who are in the habit of getting upon the seats of water closets with their feet, cannot do so with reference to the movable seat B, but may do so with reference to the stationary seat A and henee the movable seat B will at all times be found neat and clean for careful.
and cleanly persons, who desire to use it for purposes of stool.
Stationary seats of ordinary Construction, especially those devoted to public use, are continually fouled by careless and uncleanly persons by drpping urine thereon, and by getting upon the seat with their feet and otherwise. My improvement furnishes '1 remedy for these evils. I also place a cloth or fibrous covering around the aperture in the seat B, so as to protect sensitive persons against the discomforts of a cold or frosty seat in cold weather. This cloth covering is represented at (F) Fig. II.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cord C, pulley D, and weight E, with the seat B, for the purpose of making theseat B self-elevatng, substantially as described.
Gr. C. HINMAN.
