Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
MOSES DEPUY, 0F PITTSBURGH..PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN `MAKING HOES.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 30,569, dated November G, 18C0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES DEPUY, of the city of Pittsburg, county ot Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Attaching the Shank, Tang, or Eye ot' a Field or Garden Hoe to the Blade thereof; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section ofmy improved hoe. Fig. 2 represents the blade of the hoe. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of the tang or shank. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the eye.
All the tigures are lettered, and similar letters indicate like parts on all thedrawings.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching the shank or tang and eye of a hoe to the blade in the following manner, to wit:
The tang (represented by Fig. 3) is made of malleable, cast, or wrought iron, and ot' the shape shown by the perspective drawing in said figure, in which the letter S represents that part ofthe tang or shank which is to be inserted in the handle.
The letter A represents that part ot' the shank or talig extending from the handle to the blade.
The letter C represents a flange extending down from the shank, tang, or eye in front ot' the blade.
The letter b represents a groove or furrow in the shank, tang, or eye, in which the blade is inserted.
The letter e represents the flange extending down the back part of the blade, on which said ange is seen the rivet 7c, which is intended to be inserted in a corresponding hole in the blade ofthe hoe, (represented by the letter y in Fig. 2,) and there riveted.
The blade (represented by Fig. 2, letter B) is made of iron or steel and ofthe shape represented in the annexed drawings. The upper part of the middle of the blade (marked b) is made to correspond as nearly as possible in shape with the4 groove or furrow b between the two flanges c and e, and in which groove or furrow that portion of the bladeisinserted. The small flange c bcingclosed down firmly upon the blade, and the projection or rivet k being hammered up in the hole y, the blade is thereby securely and frmlyheld and fastened to the tang.
'lhe advantages which l claim for my invention are- First. ThehandIe,ineludingtheshankoreye, (as the case may be,) and the blade can be made and polished separately, and they may afterward be put together and tnished without further heating or changing.
Second. The welding of the shank or eye to the blade is obviated.
Third. The middle of the upper part of the blade, being solidlyembraced by the flanges c and c, is wholly prevented from escaping from that position by means ot' the rivet or projection lr, as seen in Fig.- 1. rlhe union between the tang and blade becomes as strong as itl welded, and much stronger than it' held by rivets alone. The flange e, turning down behind the blade ofthe hoe, stift'ens and strengthens it, and prevents its being easily broken in hacking or striking it downward.
I am well aware that hoes having malleable iron tangs or shanks have been made and are in common use; but these have the tang united to the blade either wholly by riveting or welding. I am also aware that hoes have been made wherein the metal forming the eye or tang extends down on both sides ot the blade and is secured by rivets; but in this case the hoe was formed by placing` the prepared blade in the mold and casting the eye upon it, thereby forming a union of the metals. I do not claim any or either ot' these methods of constructing hoes; but
What I do claim is- 'Ihe combining and fastening ot' a steel or iron blade and a malleable, wrought, or cast iron tang, A, by means ot' the groove or furrow b, and the Hanges c and c, and the rivet 7c, substantially in the manner herein set forth and described.
MOSES DEPUY.
