Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT vIN MANUFACTURE 0F Hoes.
Specification forming part oi Letters Patent No. 24,658, dated July 5, 1R59.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW PATTERSON, ofthe borough of Birmingham, county ot'Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and uset'ul Improvement in the Manufacture of Hoes; and I hereby declare that the following is a lull and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of lny invention consists in casting the head or eye ot' the hoc on or around the blade, which has been previously prepared and placed in a mold so as to properly receive thc molten metal of which the head or eye is to be cast, for which purpose ordinary castiron is most suitable, but other metals would answer.
The better to cnable others to manufacture hoes in accordance with my improvement and to produce my improved manufacture of hoe, I will more fully describe it in detail in view of the drawings, of which- Figurel is a perspective of a finished hoe, or of the pattern used in molding. Fig. 2 is an outline or plan ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a scction through the head or eye and plate. Fig. 4 is an outline or plan of the blade as prepared to receive the molten head or eye. The blade should consist of sheet steel or iron.
The saine letters refer to like parts in all the drawings.
a is the blade. b is the head or eye. b' is the holethrou gh the head to receive the handle. d d are jaws or projections which Iiow from the head on each side of the blade so as to securely clasp it, and also to give stiffness to the blade. c c c are holes through the blade to permit the molten metal flowing through and uniting thejaws dd into one solid mass. .fr is a cut in the blade corresponding with the eye or hole i'or thc handle, than which it (.r) should be somewhat greater in diameter.
In manufacturing my hoe I proceed as follows: Having determined the shape and configuration ot hoe which I desire to produce, which, may be of any ordinary shape or style, I prepare a pattern ot' the perfect hoe, and, having molded an impression from it in sand or other suitable material, I place the blade in the mold in its proper position, and, having closed the mold, I pour the molten metal for the hea-d into the mold, and it flows 011 and around the blade and fills the impressions made by the jaws d d on the pattern. Flowing through the holes o ce, it firmly attaches itself to the blade and forms a complete hoe.
I desire to say that the shape of the eye, head, or jaws, or the shape or position ot' the holes c c c or the cut .r in the blade, is Ilot eswsential, but may all be varied to 4suit circumstances in thejudgment ot' mechanics.
I am aware that the heads or eyes ot' hoes havebeen cast of malleable iron and afterward attached to the blade by welding or riveting. 1 do not therefore desire to claim such cas hoe-heads.
I do not claim casting hoe-heads, nor casting a flange or projection ou such head by which it is attached to the blade; nor do I claim attaching such head to the blade by rivets, as all these have before been used; but
I do claim as my invention- The combination of thc two jaws d d, which clasp the blades, with the head b and the blade a, arranged and constructed substantially as set `forth.
A. PATTERSON.
