Description
Sept. 25, 1962 A. P. LU CKETT ETAL 3,055,561
DISPENSER OF SUGAR OR THE LIKE Filed Oct. 6, 1958 PIC-3.2 I
IIIIIIII/I'II/Il FIGE INVENTORS' ALFRED R LUCKETT LORRAINE F? LUCKETT ATTORNEYS Jun a,
United States Patent 3,055,561 DISPENSER 0F SUGAR OR THE LIKE Alfred P. Luckett and Lorraine P. Luckett, La Mesa, Calif. (ldoth of 2541 E. Huntington Drive, Duarte, Calif.) Filed Oct. 6, 1958, Ser. No. 765,658 6 Claims. (Cl. 222-455) The present invention relates to a combination measur ing and dispensing device for materials, and more particularly to a combination measuring and dispensing device for solid materials such as granulated sugar.
The dispenser of the present invention comprises a main storage container having side and bottom walls and an open top; in addition to the main storage container, there is provided a contiguous second container or cup also including bottom and side walls and open at the top. A lid covers the top opening in the storage container and overlies only a part of the second mentioned container, and that part of the lid which overlies the second mentioned container is vertically spaced from the open top of the second mentioned container.
The lid further includes a depending flange which is frictionally received by a pair of slits extending downwardly from the top of the cup. The cup is thus partially divided into a measuring part and a dispensing part.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved device for dispensing a predetermined quantity of material.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved combination measuring and dispensing device which is simple in construction.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side View of one aspect of the invention showing the storage container in side elevation with the lid there-on;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the container shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2, but on a somewhat larger scale;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the container showing the lid removed.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the dispenser is shown at 20 including a main storage container 22 having upright side walls 24 which are closed by a bottom wall 26. The top of the container is shown by the edge 28, the top of the container being open as at 30.
The dispenser also includes a second container or cup 32 formed of upright side walls 34 which are closed by a bottom wall 36. Preferably a portion of the side wall 24- of the storage container is cut away to receive the container 32, and preferably the container 32 is formed integrally with the container 22. Also preferably a part of the container 32 extends exteriorly of the container 22, as at 38 of the side wall 24 and also a part 40 extends interiorly of the container 22. The upper edge of the container 32 is shown at 42 to provide an open top 44.
A lid 46 is provided for the container 22 and includes an annular depending flange 48 which telescopes with the upper part of the side Walls 24 of the container and preferably extends inwardly of said side walls 24. Slits 50' are cut in the part 40. These slits extend downwardly from the upper edge 42 of the part 40 and extend equal to the length of the depending flange 48 of the lid 46 so as to frictionally receive the portion 48. This portion of the flange provides a removable partition which partially divides the cup into a measuring part and a dispensing part.
It will be observed that the top wall 52 of the lid 46 Patented Sept. 25, 1962 is upwardly arced or convex shaped so as to be spaced upwardly from the open top of the storage container 32. The purpose of this is that, when the container, with the lid thereon, is tilted sufliciently, the sugar or the like will flow into the lid 46. Then when the container and lid are again moved to an upright position as shown in FIG. 3, at least part of the sugar that had fallen into the lid 46, will have fallen into the container 32. Then by tipping the container in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 3, the sugar will be dispensed through the open top 44 of the portion 38 of the container 32, which extends exteriorly of the storage container 22.
It will be observed particularly from FIG. 4 that the main storage or primary container 22 is cylindrically or circularly shaped in horizontal cross section and obviously the lid is also cylindrical in horizontal cross section.
From the foregoing it will be observed that we have provided a dispenser which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, yet accurately provides for dispensing a substantially equal quantity of, for example sugar, on each manipulation thereof.
While the form of embodiment herein shown and described constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claims that follow.
We claim:
1. A combination measuring and dispensing device comprising an open top container having an opening formed in its side wall adjacent its open top, a cup mounted in said opening and having portions thereof extending interiorly and exteriorly of the container, with the top of the cup in substantially the same plane as the plane of the open top of said container, a removable cover for said container, so positioned as to cover said container and a portion of said cup, said removable cover including a depending flange so positioned that the said cup is partially divided into a measuring part and a dispensing part when said cover is mounted on said container, and means provided by said portion of the cup extending interiorly of the container for frictionally receiving a portion of said depending flange for so partially dividing said cup into a measuring part and a dispensing part.
2. The combination measuring and dispensing device as defined in claim 1, wherein said means provided by said portion of the cup extending interiorly of the container for frictionally receiving a portion of the depending flange comprises a pair of slits extending downwardly from the top of said cup for receiving a portion of said depending flange.
3. The combination measuring and dispensing device defined in claim 1, wherein said means provided by a portion of the cup extending interiorly of the container for frictionally receiving a portion of the depending flange comprises a pair of parallel slits extending downwardly from the top of said cup and respectively located adjacent opposite edge portions of said opening formed in the side wall of said container.
4. A combination measuring and dispensing device comprising an open top container having an opening formed in its side wall adjacent its open top, a cup mounted in said opening and having portions thereof extending interiorly and exteriorly of the container, with the top of the cup in substantially the same plane as the plane of the open top of said container, and a removable cover for said container, so positioned as to cover said container and a portion of said cup, said removable cover including a depending flange so positioned that the said cup is partially divided into a measuring part and a dispensing part when said cover is mounted on said container, said cup including a pair of slits extending downwardly from the top thereof for receiving a portion of said depending flange for so partially dividing said cup into a measuring part and a dispensing part.
5. A combination measuring and dispensing device comprising an open top container, a cup mounted in a side wall of said container and having portions thereof extending interior-1y and exteriorly of the container, a removable cover for said container, so positioned as to cover said container and a portion of said cup, said removable cover including a depending flange so positioned that the cup is partially divided into a measuring part and a dispensing part when the cover is mounted on said container, and means provided by said cup for frictionally receiving a portion of said depending flange for so partially dividing said cup into a measuring part and a dispensing part.
6. A combination measuring and dispensing device comprising an open top container having an opening formed in its side wall adjacent its open top, a cup mounted in said opening and having portions thereof extending interiorly and exteriorly of the container, with the top of the cup in substantially the same plane as the plane of the open top of said container, a removable cover for said container, so positioned as to cover said container and a portion of said cup, said cover providing a removable partition for partially dividing the cup into a measuring part and a dispensing part when said cover is mounted on said container, and means provided by said portion of the cup extending interiorly of the container for frictionally receiving a portion of said partition for partially dividing said cup into a measuring part and a dispensing part.
