(el. azi-ss) Our invention relates to improvements in containers and more `particularly to pouring and content measuring means therein, and an object of the invention is to devise a combined pourer and measurer incorporated within the connes of the container itself which will avoid the netherefrom.
A still further object is to construct a container incorporating the above referred to device which will be exceedingly simple in use and to manu. facture and which will not cost appreciably more than the orthodox container unprovided with such device.
And another object is to form a baille of the pourer from a portion of the lid of the container.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the specication proceeds, our invention consists of the construction and arrangement as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:`
Fig. 1 represents a perspective View of a container constructed according to our invention with an end of the lid swung down to constitute the baille. l
Fig. 1A is an enlarged fragmentary view as in Fig. 1 showing the lid forming the closure prior to the end thereof being swung down to constitute a baffle of the pourer.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken through the line 2--2 (Fig. 3).
Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of our container, and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken through the line 4 4 (Fig. 2).
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views of the drawing.
Our container may assume many different forms and be manufactured of various materials. As illustrated, it is in the form of a paper carton A commonly employed for packaging powdered, naked and other comminuted commodities. `The lid I, in addition to following the orthodox practice of completely sealing the top of the container, has one end 2 capable of being turned down into the carton in spaced relation to the end wall 3 by breaking a line of perforations 2a extending around the sides and end of such end 2, thus leaving a cross-slit 4 in the top.
The end 2 of the lid-I constituting a bale may be disposed perpendicular to such lid or it may be inclined, preferably towards the end wall 3.
An inclined baille 5 preferably having side flaps 6 secured to the side walls l of the carton is so disposed that its upper end is located above the level of the free edge of the end or baille 2 of the lid I and in spaced relation thereto on the opposite side thereof. The lower end of the baille 5 is secured to the end Wall 3 and the side ilaps 6 are slotted at 6a to keep the baille 2 in a definite adjustment.
The portion of the container between the baiile` 5 and the end wall 3 constitutes a pocket for` receiving a part of the contents to be subsequently dispensed through the slot i.
The device actuates as follows:
The carton, having previously had the lid end 2 turned down into the interior thereof as above described; by breaking the perforations 2a, is inverted so that a portion of the contents ows into the space between the baille 5 and the end or baille 2 of the lid I. When the carton is restored to its normal position the portion of the contents entrapped between the baille 5 and end or baille 2 will fall down into the pocket constituted between baille 5 and end wall 3. Subsequent invertion or the carton will cause the portion of the contents in the above referred t0 pocket to be dispensed through the slit'l and at the same time a. further supply of the' product will be entrapped between the baille 5 and the end or baule 2 of the lidv I. Consequently each time the carton is inverted a further quantity of product will be dispelled therefrom until the entire contents have been consumed. Each portion' of product dispensed will be substantially equal in amount as the same quantity will be entrapped each time the carton is inverted. v
By adjusting the end or baille 2 so that it is farther away from or nearer to the baille 5, the amount of product entrapped will be greater or less.
Alternatively to the perforations 2a, the end 2 may have a sticker (not shown) gummed thereover which is torn off when it is desired to dispense the contents.
From the above description it will be apparent that we have devised a simple and effective pourer and measurer for containers which will be entirely contained within the confines of the carton and. therefore, not alter in any way the symmetrical shape thereof.
What I claim as my invention is:
. 1. In a container having a top closure iiap completely sealing the 'container-, the combinaend wall, and a second baille secured to the aforesaid end wall and extending between the side wallswith its upper end positioned in spaced relation4 to the top closure nap and to the de pending baille on the side :thereof remote from the aforesaid adjacent end wall.
2. In a container having a top closure flap completely sealing the container, the combination with the side and end walls and the tcp closure ap thereof, of an integral end portion of said top closure flap normally lying in the plane of the top closure ilap adapted to be swung down out of the plane of the top closure flap into a desired fixed position within the container-to constitute a depending baille therein and formingwhensoswung down'a dispensing slit of fixed dimensions in the top between said depending baille and the adjacent end wall; said slit being equal in size to the down swung portion of the top closure flap, and a second baille inclined'inwardly and upwardly and secured at its lower end to the aforesaid end wall and extending between the side walls with its upper end positioned in spaced relation to the top closure flap and to the depending baille on the side thereof remote from the aforesaid adjacent end wall.
3. The invention asclaimed in claim 1 wherein the second baiiie has side naps adapted to be secured to the side walls and slotted so as to hold in adjustment the first bame when turned down.
4. 'I'he invention as claimed in claim 1 wherein means are provided cooperating with the second baille for positively retaining the depending baf- 20 ile, when swung down into the container, in a fixed position with relation to the second baille.
