UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. NATHAN FISHER, on COATESVILLE, INDIANA.
STEP- LADDER.
BPLZCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,516, dated September 23, 1884.
I Application filed July 26, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ooatesville, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladders; and 1110 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved step-ladder, showing it extended; and Fig. 2, asectional view of the ladder folded together.-
The object of the present invention is to provide a step-ladder that can be extended to any required length or height, and can also be folded together in a compact form when not in use. These objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent the two sections of the ladder, the former having stationary steps a, while the steps b of the latter section are pivoted, and when in position for use rest, upon the transverse bars 0. The upper section, B, is somewhat narrower than section A, and slides within the same between the steps a and transverse bars (1, the pivoted steps I) being swung up longi tudinally with the sides of the section B, as shown in Fig. 2. These pivoted steps may be bronghtto this position by striking against the stationary steps of the lower section as the section slides into posit-ion, or they may be adjusted by hand.
To the upper section, B, is suitably hinged the supporting-frame 0, having on its sides longitudinal slots 6, extending the entire length thereof, or nearly so. Passing through theseslots is a transverse rod, j, which connects with the legs D, the legs and frame be ing strengthened by cross-braces in the ordi- These legs D may be extended to any desired length with relation to the frame 0, and held in such extended position by pins 9, entering holes in the sides of the frame.' The slots 0 and rod f form a'means of connection between the frame 0 and supporting-legs D, and also act as a guide;
At the bottom of the extensible section B, or the lower end thereof, are pivoted blocks h. of any suitable form and construction, to
form means for holding the section at any desired height, which is accomplished by turning them, as shown in Fig. 1, so that they will bear 011 one of the steps a and transversebars (I.
I do not desire to confine myself to any particular means of pivoting the steps of the extensible section; but in the present instance I connect them by staples to small iron rods eX- tending across the sides of the section and fastened thereto.
- Although I do not limit my invention to the means shown for connecting the frame 0 to the section B, and to more securely make the 0011- nection and prevent slipping of the frame out too far, I provide stays t to extend around the sides of the frame, which may also be modified as circumstances may require.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An extension step-ladder consisting of two sections. one of said sections having pivoted steps, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An extension consisting of two sections,
one sliding within the other, the lower section having stationary steps and the upper section having pivoted steps and crossbars, upon which they rest when in position for use, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In an extensionladder, a lower section having stationary steps, in combination with an upper and extensible section provided with pivoted steps, and means for holding section at any desired height, said section having a hinge-frame with extensiblelegs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NATHAN FISHER.
