No. 578,061 Claims. (Cl. 23525) This invention relates generally to cash registers and the like, and is more particularly concerned with an assembly for visual transaction indication usable as an auxiliary or conversion attachment for conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer units, or as an initially installed integral portion of a combination adding machine-cash drawer unit.
A preferred embodiment of invention is disclosed relative to a conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit, such as a type manufactured by R. C. Allen Business Machines, Incorporated, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, which utilizes a forward power stroke, i.e., an activating handle or the like moving toward the operator of the machine, the machine being of either the manually or electrically motivated type. This invention may be utilized in numerous presently manufactured combination adding machine-cash drawer units which incorporate a forward power stroke activating an oscillating or reciprocating indexing sector, a main drive shaft rotatably supported in transverse relationship on the adding machine frame and connected through various levers to a reciprocating linkage member, such as a restoring power arm, and also including a vertically displaceable total and sub-total index key actuating cooperating vertically displaceable linkages as well as actuating a printing assembly and the like.
Combination adding machine-cash drawer units are appreciably cheaper than most type of cash registers, as well as being more flexible and versatile in affording a greater range of operation, and providing means for performing a plurality of different operations. When a conventional cash register is utilized as an adding machine, for which it is not designed, the visual indicator tabs and the operating parts thereof are simultaneously actuated resulting in shortening of the life of the cooperating parts due to excessive operation and wear, as well as increasing maintenance problems of the cash register. In addition, conventional cash registers are appreciably slower in operation than adding machine type cash drawers, the latter incorporating a fewer operating parts and being susceptible to more ready maintenance and repair.
Present day conventional combination adding machinecash drawer units, in addition to requiring a smaller initial capital investment, will perform all the functions of conventional cash registers more efliciently and with less maintenance problems, however, as at presently advised, combination adding machine-cash drawer units fail to include visual indicator tabs for apprising the customer of the cost and type of individual item or service as each sale or item is recorded or tabulated. Oftentirnes the frugal shopper when not apprised of each individual item being charged, desiring tocheck the operator of the machine, in a grocery store, service station or the like, will hesitate and even refuse to shop in such an establishment.
The primary object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to overcome the shortcomings of the prior art and to provide novel visual indicating means for adding machine type cash drawers.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide an attachment for combination adding machine-cash drawer units which is automatically actuated during operation of the combination adding machine-cash drawer unit, including a plurality of visual 3,051,378 Patented Aug. 28, 1962 ice indicator tabs corresponding to the keys of the cash drawer providing visual apprisement of the type and cost of each unit being recorded or registered by the cash drawer during a series of operations.
A more specific object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide in an attachment of the character involved a plurality of visual indicator tab magazines including indicator tabs corresponding to the various designations and denomination designations of the tabulating keys of the cash drawer, including means operatively connected to indexing structure of the cash drawer for simultaneously indexing corresponding visual indicator tabs in one or more of the magazines, and
means for resetting previously activated or actuated visual indicator tabs made visible during a previous operation of the cash drawer.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide in an attachment of the character involved duplicate sets of visual indicator tab magazines and means connected therebetween whereby when visual indicator tabs are released or activiated in one magazine a similar visual indicator tab is simultaneously activated providing visual indication of the denomination and type sale from both the front and rear of the cash drawer.
A still further object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide in an attachment of the character involved with means for deactivating the attachment and visual indicators thereof whereby the combination adding machine-cash drawer unit may be used as an adding machine independent of the attachment.
Other objects of invention in conformance with that set forth reside in the cooperation of the various parts of the attachment affording the novel indicating means of the invention.
And yet another still further object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel attachment of the character involved which is readily and economically manufactured, easily installed, serviced and maintained, and highly practical, durable and acceptable fior the purpose intended.
These, together with other objects and advantages will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, as seen in FIGURE 1 an adding machine type cash drawer including the novel visual indicating attachment is indicated generally at 10, the conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit being indicated generally at 12, and the novel visual indicating attachment being indicated generally at 14. The cash drawer 12 will have enclosed within the housing 16 the various cooperating parts of the conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit including a lower enlarged portion 18 reciprocably supporting therein a suitable cash drawer 20 extensible during a totalling operation of the cash drawer 20. The cash drawer, in the exemplary embodiment, is shown to be operated by a manually operable crank-type handle 22 and includes a totalling assembly, not shown in detail, incorporating an indicia portion 24, :for registering each item being added or recorded by the cash drawer, a printing assembly indicated generally at 26 aifording an itemized list of the various numbers being added as well as including thereon letter designations of the type of goods or material being added, such as tax, groceries, gasoline, etc. The just mentioned structure is conventional and although a manually operated combination adding machine-cash drawer unit is disclosed in the exemplary embodiment, types of machines of the character involved being electrically motivated may also have the novel attachment incorporated therewith. The exemplary embodiment discloses a combination adding machine-cash drawer unit having a maximum capacity of $9,999.99 including a first row of tabulating keys 28 numbering from 1 to 9 for indicating cents, a second row of tabulating keys in divisions of 10 numbering from 10 to 90 as indicated at 30, a third row of vertically disposed tabulating keys numbered from 1 to 9 indicating dollars as indicated at 32, and a fourth row of vertically disposed keys 34 which include item designa tions such as groceries, tax, gasoline, etc. as well as keys with letter designations for identifying the clerk ringing up the sale. Indicated at 36 is a total tabulating key, at 38 there is shown a sub-total tabulating key, and at 40 there is designated a change or correction key. Although the exemplary embodiment is shown with respect to a combination adding machine-cash drawer unit having a maximum capacity up to $9,999.99, it is to be understood that machines of a greater or larger capacity may readily incorporate the novel visual indicating attachment to subsequently be described in detail,
The attachment 14 includes a suitable observation window portion 44 which opens to both the front and the rear of the attachment afiording visual observation of both the customer and the clerk or operator of the machine. As is conventional in the art, and for the purposes of identification in this case, the operator of the machine will be disposed in a position to observe the machine as seen in FIGURE 1, this being designated as the rear of the machine wherein the novel visual indicating attachment will be disposed toward the front of the machine. The novel visual indicating attachment may be incorporated as an auxiliary attachment for the conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit, in which event the cover member of said machine will be modified in any suitable manner for cooperating with the cover of the novel attachment, and the frame of the conventional adding machine cash drawer will also be modified for this purpose. However, the novel attachment may also be incorporated as a part of the combination adding machine-cash drawer unit when initially manufactured, in which event a suitable frame and cover member will be supplied. The novel attachment in this instance will be described as being an auxiliary attachment cooperating 'with a previously manufactured conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit.
In FIGURES 2 through 14 the housing or cover member of the novel indicating attachment has been conveniently removed, and wherever necessary fragmentary portions of the conventional combination adding machinecash drawer unit have been disclosed in their relationship to the novel attachment.
The visual indicating attachment 14, exclusive of the cover member therefor, includes a support frame member indicated generally at 46, visual indicator tab means 48 comprising a plurality of indicator tab magazine assemblies 50 and 52 which will be identified as first and second indicator tab means, respectively, the magazines 50 and 52 being equal to each row of figures on the combination adding machine-cash drawer unit, and an additional magazine indicated generally at 54 is provided, this magazine including visual indicator tab assemblies equal in number to the item designation tabulation keys 34, and in addition incorporating therein a visual indicator tab assembly activated by depression of the total and sub-total tabulating keys of the cash drawer, as will subsequently become apparent. The novel visual indicating attachment also includes indexing means indicated generally at 56, reset or restoring means indicated generally at 58 for restoring activated visual tab assemblies to a reset position for subsequent use, actuating means indicated generally at 60 for operating the reset means and indexed indexing means,
and deactivation means indicated generally at 62 for rendering the novel visual indicating attachment inoperative whereby the combination adding machine-cash drawer unit may be utilized in dilferent procedures exclusive of the attachment.
The frame member 46 includes a suitable base portion 64 suitably secured to the base or chassis portion of the cash drawer in any suitable manner, and has extending vertically therefrom suitably secured spaced side frame members 66 and 68, and 70 and 72 on opposite sides of said base member 64. Suitably secured on the upper ends thereof are end members 74 and 76 which extend between the upper ends of the vertical support members 70 and 72, and 66 and 68, respectively, and extending from opposite ends of members 74 and 76 are top frame members 78 and 80, the members 74 through 80 providing a skeletonized horizontal support portion for the visual indicator tab means as will subsequently become apparent, as well as providing means for journaling various linkages and shafts as will also be described in detail. The vertical support members 66 through 72, and horizontal support members 74 through St) may be conveniently formed from suitable right-angled structural channel members of aluminum or any other suitable material. Suitably secured between intermediate oppositely disposed portions of the vertical support members 66 and 68, and 70 and 72, are transverse support elements 82 and 8 4.
Between suitable aligned intermediate apertures of the vertical support members 68 and 72 is journaled a transverse support shaft 86 which has secured in spaced relationship thereon in any suitable manner intermediate portions of vertically pivotal levers 88, said levers 88 being of the same number as indicator tab magazine assemblies 50, and one additional lever 88 for actuating the indicator tab magazine assembly 54, each of said levers 88 being in substantial alignment with the aforementioned magazine assemblies and constituting a portion of the indexing means 56. The levers 88 may be of any suitable construction and have secured at their lower end portions by means of a screw 96, for example, force transmitting means shown in the exemplary embodiment as a suitable flexible cable element 92, however, the force transmitting means may also comprise a substantially rigid linkage element of any suitable character. The cable 92 has secured at an end portion thereof extending toward the combinat-ion adding machine-cash drawer unit adjustable securing means indicated generally at 94, see FIGURES 8 and 14, for example, including a threaded body portion 96 terminating in an upper hook end portion 98 which is engageable with an oscillating or vertically pivotal indexing sector portion 100 of a conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit. In this regard although an indexing sector is disclosed, means 94 may be suitably secured to any reciprocating indexing portion of a conventional combination adding machine-cash drawer unit with 'which the visual indicating attachment will be utilized. The body portion 96 has threadedly disposed thereon a clamp nut 102 cooperating with the hook end portion 93 for fixedly securing the assembly 94 on the indexing portion of the cash drawer. Threadedly disposed on an inrter-mediate portion of the body portion 96 is in an adjusting nut 104 to which the end portion of the flexible cable 92 is suitably secured, and thus rotation of the nut 104 will result in changing the effective length of the flexible cable 92 and when the index-ing sector 100 is pivoted as seen by the direction arrow in FIGURE 14 a comparable movement will take place in one of the levers 88, thus simultaneous indexing of the novel indicating attachment will result due to comparable movement of indexing portions. When utilizing a flexible cable 92 instead of a rigid linkage as previously mentioned, the lever members 88 have secured to an intermediate upper end portion thereof one end of a tension spring member 106, the other end of which being secured to a convenient portion of the frame or on the frame member 78 of the attachment, for example. Reciprocably and rotatably supported adjacent the indicator tab magazine assemblies 50 and 54 are indexing rod elements 168 which may be supported in any suitable manner on the frame member of the attachment, for example, extending through suitably aligned oppositely disposed aperture portions in the frame members 78 and 80, see FIGURE 10, [for example. Said rods being in alignment with the pivotal path of an upper end portion of the levers 88 and thus pivotal movement of the same results in reciprocatory movement of said rods 108 in proportion to the movement of the indexing portion of the cash drawer. Extending transversely to the rods 168 is a lateral abutment element 110 constituting indexing means when said rod is rotated as will subsequently become apparent and be described in detail. The element 110 serves as an abutment engageable with an inner surface portion of the frame member 80.
The lever members 88 have extending from an upper end thereof a pin element 112 which has secured thereto one end of a tension spring element 114 the other end of which being disposed over the previously mentioned indexing pins or abutment elements 110, thus as the lever elements 88 pivot counterclockwise as seen in FIGURE 5, for example, the indexing rods 108 are moved to a proper position relative to the magazine assemblies previously mentioned and to be described in detail, during a given operation or manipulation of the power handle of the unit, and in timed sequence movement of said handle forwardly or away from the operator of the unit results in operation of the actuating means 60, to be later described in detail, causing rotation of the indexing rod 108 and activation of visual indicator tab assemblies also to subsequently be described in detail. Prior to activation of the previously mentioned visual indicator tab assemolies the reset or restoring means will have been actuated by the actuating means for the purpose of resetting the aforementioned visual indicator tab assemblies.
The visual indicator tab magazine assemblies 50, 52 and 54 each comprise a vertically extending support member 116 suitably supported in vertically extending relationship from the frame members 78 and 80 and conveniently including a 'C-shaped cross section opening toward the indexing rods 10 8. Members 116 include a web portion 118 and side flanges 120 and 122, however, the magazine assemblies 52 have the visual tab assemblies therein operatively connected with force transmitting means to subsequently be described for simultaneous actuation with those contained in magazine assemblies 50, the magazine assemblies 50 and 52 afiording means for providing simultaneous observation of the indicia means of the indicator tabs from the front and rear of the novel attachment. Thus the magazine assemblies 52 may be eliminated if desired. Each of the magazine assemblies include therein a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies indicated generally at 124 being of the same number as the number of tabulating keys in the columns or rows of tabulating keys, however, the magazine assembly 54 will have as many visual tab assemblies as there are item tabulating keys and will also include therein an independently operable visual tab assembly activated upon actuation of the total or sub-total tabulating keys of the cash drawer.
The visual tab assemblies 124 include a lower latch portion 126 and a vertically reciprocable resiliently urged indicia tab portion 128. The flanges 120 and 122 of the channel member 116 include a transverse pivot. shaft suitably secured and extending therebetween in suitable apertured portion as indicated at 130, the latch portions 126 comprising intermediately pivoted lever elements having an upper hook portion 132, see FIGURE 9, which is extendable and pivotal into overlying relationship relative to a laterally extending hook portion 134 on the lower end of the indicia tab portions 128. A suitable transverse rod 136 is disposed between the flanges 120 and 122 in underlying relationship relative to the hook portion 134 of the indicia tab portion 128 for positioning the same when they are disposed in a latched position. The web portion 118 of member 116 is inwardly bent at 138 this portion constituting a camming portion for engagement with the upper end 140 of a lower portion 142 of the vertically reciprocable indicia. tab portions. Said indicia tab portions in addition to including the lower portion 142 has pivotally connected at 144 an indicating tab portion 146 which includes an edge portion 148 in engagement with a transverse guide rod 150 suitably secured in transverse relationship between the flanges 120 and 122 and the upper edge of portion 142 of the indicia tab portion has a transverse notch 152 disposed therein for engage ment with a reciprocable abutment portion of the reset means as will subsequently be described.
The flanges 120 and 122 of member 116 also have extending transversely therebetWeen a pair of spaced support rod elements 154 and 156 having extending therebetween a plurality of elongated spring members 158, see FIGURE 9, which are in longitudinal alignment with the latch portions of the visual tab assemblies, said springs 158 being overcome upon rotation of the index rod 108 and being effective to urge the latch portion 132 into latching engagement with the reciprocable indicia tab portion previously described. Suitably secured in upwardly spaced relationship relative to the rod 156 for engagement with a side edge of the reciprocable indicia tab portion is a transverse spring member 164) which aids in urging said reciprocable tab portion into a proper position for engagement with the hook portion 132. Each of the portions 142 of said reciprocable indicia portion has extending from one side thereof a mounting pin element 162 having secured thereto a tension spring element 164, the other end of said tension spring being suitably secured to a transverse pin or rod 166 extending between the aforementioned flanges 120 and 122, said springs 164 being effective to urge the indicia portion of the reciprocable indicia tab portion to a visible position after it has been activated by rotation of the indexing rod 168.
Suitably secured on upper ends of the flanges 12% and 122 are a pair of resilient converging guide plate elements 168 and 170 which will engage relatively flexible upper indicia portions 172, see FIGURE 2, of the reciprocable tab portions for disposing them in substantially vertical relationship relative to the observation window of the attachment.
As most clearly seen in FIGURE 9, the pivotal latch portions 126 of the visual tab assemblies has extending therethrough a transverse bore portion 174 which is in longitudinal alignment with a similar or comparable visual tab assembly contained in one of the magaznie assemblies 52 (not shown) said bore portions 174 having received therein a bent end portion 176 of an elongated force transmitting rod 178, and thus when the pivotal latch portions of the magazine assemblies 58 are caused to rotate by actuation of the index rod 188 a similar visual tab assembly in the magazine assemblies 52 will be activated, thus visual tabs will be observable from both the front and rear of the attachment. As seen in FIG- URE 6, the force transmitting rods 178 are vertically spaced to prevent interference of reciprocable movement therebetween.
The actuating means 60 includes an elongated cam link or bar 180 which is pivotally connected at 182, see FIG URE 2 for example, to vertically pivotal or reciprocable linkage structure 184, for example, the power restoring arm 186 being suitable for this purpose, however, any suitable reciprocable linkage of the cash drawer may be utilized for supplying the power to the attachment. The actuating means being operated on the return stroke of the adding machine type cash drawer after the visual indicator tab assemblies have been previously indexed in relation to the tabulating keys of the cash drawer, during reciprocation of the link or bar 188 the reset means 58 will have been actuated during part of the movement of said link 180 wherein all of the indicia portions of the tab assemblies will have been reset in a position for subsequent use.
A transverse support shaft 188 extends between oppositely disposed aligned aperture portions extending through the plates 82 and 84 of the frame member being suitably journaled therein for rotation, said shaft 188 having suitably connected on a central portion thereof, see FIGURE 12, a laterally extending lever element 190 pivotally connected at 192 to a connecting linkage 194, said linkage 194 being pivotally connected at 196 to a Cir laterally disposed clamping sleeve element 198 which is suitably secured by means of a set screw (not shown) to an elongated spring urged guide rod 200 constituting a portion of the restoring or resetting means 58. The guide rod 280 extends vertically through a suitable apertured portion of the flange 30 of the frame member, arranged in transverse relationship to the front side of the magazine assembly members 116 and secured to the flanges 122 thereof in any suitable manner in overlying reltaionship relative to frame member portion 88 is a channel member 2112, see FIGURE 2, which is suitably apertured for guidingly receiving therethrough the guide rod 200. Suitably secured at the pivot portion 192 of the linkage 194, see FIGURE 6, is one end of a tension spring member 204 which extends in substantially parallel alignment to the guide rod 201 through a suitable apertured portion in frame member being suitably secured to the transverse member 202, Said spring 204 being effective to urge the rod 288 upwardly, the upper portion 286 of element 198, see FIGURE 12, serving as an abutment to engage the undersurface of frame portion 80 for limiting the upward movement of the guide rod 200. Secured in transverse relationship on an intermediate portion of the guide rod 20% is a transverse support bar 268, see FIGURES 2, 5 and 7, for example said bar 208 having extending normal therefrom suitably secured blade or bail elements 210, said blade elements 216 being equal to the number of visual indicator tab magazine assemblies and extending through a suitable notch portion 212 in the side flange 122 of member 116 of the indicator tab magazine assemblies. As seen in FIGURE 9, the blade or bail elements 210 include a lower knife edge portion 214 which is engageable in the notch portion 152 of the indicator portion 142 of the visual indicator tab assemblies, said notch portion 152 being oriented into underlying relationship relative to the blade edge 214 by the cam portion 138 previously described. Thus rotation of the lever 190 results in reciprocaole movement of the guide rod 290, the tension of the spring 206 being overcome, and accordingly downward movement of the blade elements 210 results in restoring or resetting previously activated indicator portions of the visual indicator tab assemblies to a position for subsequent use, the same being relatched or reengaged by the latch portion 142 previously described.
In order to obtain the aforementioned rotary movement of the shaft 188 there is secured thereon in any suitable manner on an intermediate portion of the shaft 138 in spaced relationship from the lever 19% a lever element 216 having extending laterally from a lower end portion thereof a suitably secured cam follower element 218, see FIGURE 12, engageable in a cam notch portion 220 in an intermediate lower edge portion of the link or bar 180, the bar 1819 including on its end portion 222 a suitable hook portion 224, see FIGURE 12, which has secured thereto one end of a tension spring member 226 the other end of which being secured to a suitable portion of the frame member portion 64, see FIGURE 6. The spring 226 is effective to urge the link or bar downwardly about its pivotal connection 182 thus insuring engagement between the cam portion 228 and cam follower 218, and when the link 1% in moved in the direction indicated by the direction arrow of FIGURE 12 rotary movement will be imparted to the lever 216 and lever resulting in a downward movement of the guide rod 200 as shown by the direction arrow in FIGURE 12 resulting in a resetting or restoring operation of the resetting means 58. Also secured to the transverse shaft 188 adjacent the lever 216 is a lever .28 which is of a greater length than the lever 216 and which has extending from a lower end portion thereof a lateral abutment pin 230 disposed in underlying relationship relative to the cam follower element 218, thus as the link or bar 180 moves in the direction previously mentioned, the cam follower 218 is picked up in the cam notch 221) of the link 181) causing sufficient rotary movement to the lever 190 to result in downward movement of the guide rod 200 sufficiently to reset the previously mentioned tab indicator portion and as the link 180 continues to move the abutment pin or rod 230 will engage the lower edge portion to the link 180 raising the same off of the cam follower 218 whereafter the tension spring 204 will be effective to urge the reset means 58 to a position for subsequent operation. The lever 228 is adjustable about the shaft 188 by means of a suitable set screw 232, see FIGURE 4, whereby the aforementioned lowering of the reset means 58 will take place due to reciprocation of the link 180 and subsequent release of said link from the cam follower 218 resulting from the larger arc of movement of the abutment pin element 230.
The actuating means 60 also includes means for activating previously indexed visual indicator tab asemblies due to the previously mentioned vertical pivotal movement of the levers 88 and indexing rods 108 which is in advance of complete forward movement of the link 180, it is to be understood that the reset means 58 will be actuated substantially at the same time said indexing rods 108 are positioned adjacent a visual indicator tab assembly to be activated.
The activation of the previously indexed rods 108 takes place at the end of the stroke of the link 180, said link 180 including on its end portion 222 a laterally extending abutment pin element 234, see FIGURE 4, and extending laterally from an intermediate portion of frame member 84 is a suitably secured horizontally disposed support plate 236 which underlies portion 74 of the frame member, said plate 236 and frame member portion 74 having suitable aligned apertures extending therethrough rotatably supporting a suitably journaled vertical shaft 238 of a crank assembly indicated generally at 240, see FIGURE 2 for example, said crank assembly 240 including means thereon for engagement with the previously mentioned abutment pin 234 as will subsequently be described. The shaft 238 has extending from a lower end portion thereof a suitably secured lower lateral lever arm 242, see FIGURE 12, extending toward the link 180 and having extending from an upper surface portion thereof a vertical abutment pin element 244 disposed in the path of reciprocable movement of the abutment pin 234 and accordingly when the pin 234 engages the pin 244 the shaft 238 will be rotated about its longitudinal axis. Suitably connected to an upper end portion of the pin 244 is a tension spring elment 246 effective to cause a forward rotary movement of the pin 244 to a position from which it has been moved by the engagement thereof by the pin 234, said spring 246 is suitably secured on an adjacent side portion of the frame member of the attachment.
The frame member has on the portion 80 a pair of forwardly extending spaced support arms 248 and 250, see FIGURE 7 for example, which have reciprocably supported thereon an elongated support bar 252 having extending laterally therefrom a plurality of transverse abutment elements 254 normally located in overlying aligned relationship with the indexing rods 108, said rods 108 including laterally extending abutment pin elements 256 which are disposed in the path of reciprocation of the abutment elements 254, it being noted that only the visual indicator tab magazine assemblies 50 and 54 necessitating the utilization of indexing rods 108 wherein movement of the abutment elements 254 in the direction indicated by the direction arrow in FIGURE 7 results in rotation of the indexing rods 108 thus activating previously indexed rods 108 due to the previously described pivotal movement of the levers 88 wherein the lateral pin elements 110 on the rods 108 will engage the latching portion of the visual indicator tab assemblies. As seen in FIGURE 7, the springs 114 which urge the indexing rods 108 into engagement with the levers 88 upon a return stroke also engage a side portion of the lateral pin element 256 urging them in a direction toward the abutment elements 254. Extending transversely through an intermediate portion of the reciprocable support bar 252 is a suitable abutment element such as a screw 258 which limits movement in a direction opposite to that indicated by the direction arrow of FIGURE 7. A suitable guide element such as an elongated screw and washer 260 may be secured in the lateral support arm 250, see FIGURE 7, with the washer in overlying relationship relative to the bar 252 for preventing accidental vertical displacement thereof.
Suitably secured on an upper end portion of the rod 238 is a forwardly extending upper lateral lever arm 262, see FIGURE 2 for example, which is pivotally connected at 264 to a force transmitting link element 266 pivotally connected at 268 to an intermediate portion of the support bar 252. Thus the rotary movement of the lever arm 262 through the linkage 266 applie reciprocable movement to the support bar 25 2 and actuation of the previous ly indexed rods 108 previously described by engagement of the abutment pin 234 with the vertical abutment pin 244 on the lower lateral lever arm 242 also secured to the vertical shaft 234. If described in order to retain the bar 252 in engagement with the support arm 248 for the purpose of aiding of the return of said bar 252 with the abutment 258 thereof in engagement with the support arm an elongated tension spring 270 may be secured to the end 272 of said bar 252, see FIGURE 7, the other end of said spring 270' being suitably secured to the support frame member. When the support bar 252 reciprocates in the direction indicated by the direction arrow 259 the spring 270 will engage the adjacent edge portion 274 of the support arm 248 tending to urge the bar 252 in a direction opposite that of the direction arrow in FIG- URE 7 this movement also being caused by the previously mentioned tension spring 246 in engagement with the vertical abutment pin 244.
The visual indicator tab magazine assembly 54, as previously mentioned, includes therein a plurality of visual tab assemblies corresponding to the item tabulating keys of the adding machine type cash drawer, and also includes an independently actuated visual tab assembly indicated generally at 276 in FIGURE 10, said tab assembly 276 being actuated by the total and subtotal index keys as will subsequently become apparent and including a foreshortened lower latch portion 278. Thus this latch portion 278 will not be engaged by the abutment pin 110 of the indexing rod 108 which is effective to activate the other visual tab assemblies 124 of FIGURE 10. In all other respects, with the exception as to how the tab assembly 276 is actuated, this tab assembly is identical with those previously described. Extending transversely through the flange 122 of member 116 of the magazine assembly 54 is a bight portion 280 of a crank lever element indicated generally at 282 said crank lever element including one end or leg portion 284 terminating in a reverse bend portion 286 extending into a suitable aperture portion in latch portion 278 of the tab assembly 276. The crank lever element 282 includes a second leg portion 288 substantially parallel to the leg 284 and having a lower end portion 290 engageable with a vertically displaceable abutment reciprocably carried on the support bar 252 as will be understood when considering FIGURES l0 and 11. Thus movement of the leg 288 in the same direction as the support bar 252 for actuating previously indexed rods 108 would result in a comparable movement of the leg 284 pulling the latch portion 278 of the visual tab assembly 276 away from the indicator portion thereof permitting the indicator portion having an indicia tab marked total to be urged in a visible observation position on the attachment.
As most clearly seen in FIGURE 11, for example, the support bar 252 has extending therethrough a suitably secured transverse support shaft 292 which has journaled thereon vertically pivotal plate element 294, said plate element having extending from an edge portion opposite the bar 252 a lateral abutment pin element 296, see FIG- URES and 11, said abutment pin 296 normally being disposed below the lower end portion 290 of leg portion 288 of the crank lever element 282 not being engageable therewith except when the support plate 292 is raised as indicated by the dotted line position in FIGURE 11. The plate 294 will normally be in engagement on an upper surface portion of an abutment element 254, see FIG- URE 11.
Indicated at 298, see FIGURE 13, is a downwardly displaceable linkage element which is urged downwardly when either the total or sub-total index keys of the cash drawer are depressed, and supported on a suitable por tion 300 of the chassis of the cash drawer in any suitable manner is a support bracket 302 which has pivoted at 304 an intermediately pivoted lever member 306 including at its end 308 a laterally extending abutment pin element 310 engageable with a lower surface portion of the linkage 298, when such engagement occurs the opposite end 312 of the lever 366 will move upwardly in the direction indicated by the direction arrow in FIGURE 13, said end 312 including in its upper edge portion a suitable recess having disposed therein one end of a substantially rigid force transmitting rod element 314, the upper end of said rod 314, see FIGURE 11, being in engagement with an undersurface portion of the plate 294 in spaced relationship from the pivot shaft 292 wherein when the total or sub-total keys are depressed the plate 294 will be raised and subsequent reciprocable movement of the bar 252 results in engagement between the abutment pin 296 on the plate 2% in the lower end portion 290 of the crank lever element 282 this movement causing activation of the total indicator tab assembly 276. The indicating portion of the tab assembly 276 will be reset or restored in the manner previously described relative to the reset assembly 58. The rod 314 will extend through a suitable apertured portion in the frame member portion 80 as seen in FIGURES 10 and 11. The support plate 2% is freely journaled on the support shaft 292, however, if desired a suitable spring may be incorporated therewith to insure positive lowering of the same, otherwise the plate is free to fall or return to a position where the pin 2% will not actuate the tab assembly 276 by virtue of its own weight.
The de-activating means indicated generally at 62, see FIGURES 2 and 12, for example, comprises a transverse shaft member 316 suitably jou-rnaled in member 70 of the side frame member, and terminating in a laterally extending lever portion 318 continuing as a reverse bend portion 320 disposable beneath the lower edge of the actuating link 189, rotation of the reverse bend portion 320 in a counterclockwise direction as seen in FIGURE 12 resulting in raising the link or bar element 180 about its pivotal connection 182 wherein the cam notch portion 226" will not engage the cam follower 218 and the abutment pin 234 will not engage the vertical abutment pin 244 thus the reset means 58 and the visual indicating tab means of the attachment will be de-activated wherein the adding machine type cash drawer may be used independently of the novel attachment. As seen in FIGURE 2, the shaft 316 of the de-activating means may include a slot portion 322 therein for accommodating a suitable ke-y whereby the de-activating means may be operated.
Thus there has been disclosed a novel visual indicating attachment which fully conforms with the objects of invention heretofore set forth.
Various positional directional terms such as front, rear, upper, etc. are utilized herein to have only a relative connotation to aid in describing the device and it is not intended to require any particular orientation with respect to any external elements.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modificaitons and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, and actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, the indexing means including a transverse shaft journaled between opposite side portions of the frame member, elongated vertically pivotal lever means on an intermediate portion of the shaft, the force transmitting means of said indexing means comprising an elongated element connected at one end to a lower end portion of said lever means and including adjusting means on the other end portion thereof for adjusting the effective length of the elongated element providing pivotal movement of the lever means in proportion to the movement of an indexing portion of the cash register, an elongated indexing rod, means for slidably and rotatably supporting said rod on an upper portion of the frame member on an axis of rotation in alignment with the pivotal path of an upper end portion of the vertically pivotal lever means, means extending between the indexing rod and lever means causing the indexing rod to move a predetermined distance during a recording operation of the cash register, said indexing rod including a lateral abutment portion disposable in indexed alignment wtih a visual tab assembly whereby rotation of said indexing rod activates the visual tab assembly.
2. A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, and actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, said visual indicator tab means comprising a plurality of vertcally extending magazine assemblies extending from an upper end portion of the frame member and including therein a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies equal to the number of keys disposed in a single row of numerical tabulating keys on the keyboard of the cash register, one magazine assembly includ- 0 ing therein visual tab assemblies corresponding to the item and total tabulating keys of the keyboard of the cash register, each of said visual tab assemblies including a pivotal latch portion engageable with the indexing means, and a vertically reciprocable, resiliently urged indicia tab portion detachably engaging the latch portion f the tab assembly.
3. A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, and second visual indicator tab means including visual tab assemblies corresponding to those of the first mentional visual indicator tab means, and including force transmitting means extending between the visual tab assemblies of the visual indicator tab means permitting simultaneous activation of corresponding visual tab assemblies, said visual tab assemblies including oppositely disposed indica means permitting observation of each recording operation from both the front and rear portions of the attachment, said visual indicator tab means comprising a plurality of vertically extending magazine assemblies extending from an upper end portion of the frame member and including therein a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies equal to the number of keys disposed in a single row of numerical tabulating keys on the keyboard of the cash register, one magazine assembly including therein visual tab assemblies comparable to the item and total tabulating keys of the keyboard of the cash register, each of said visual tab assemblies including a pivotal latch portion engageable with the indexing means, and a vertically reciprocable, resiliently urged indicia tab portion detachably engaging the latch portion of the tab assembly, the force transmittting means between the visual tab assemblies comprising an elongated rod element extending between the pivotal latch portions of corresponding tab assemblies permitting simultaneous release of similar indicia tab portions upon which the indicia means is disposed.

A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, and actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion enga-geable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, the indexing means including a transverse shaft journaled be tween opposite side portions of the frame member, elongated vertically pivotal lever mean-s on an intermediate portion of the shaft, the force transmitting means of said indexing means comprising an elongated element connected at one end to a lower end portion of said lever means and including adjusting means on the other end portion thereof for adjusting the effective length of the elongated element providing pivotal movement of the lever means in proportion to the movement of an indexing portion of the cash register, an elongated indexing rod slidably and rotatably supported on an upper portion of the frame member on an axis of rotation in alignment with the pivotal path of an upper end portion of the vertically pivotal lever means, means extending between the indexing rod and lever means causing the rod to move a predetermined distance during a recording operation of the cash drawer, said indexing rod including a lateral abutment portion disposable in indexed alignment with a visual tab assembly whereby rotation of said indexing rod activates the visual tab assembly, said actuating means comprising an elongated reciproeable link element including a lateral abutment extending therefrom, a crank assembly including a central shaft portion journaled in vertically disposed relationship on the frame member, said crank assembly including a lower lateral abutment arm on the shaft having an abutment portion thereon engage able with the lateral abutment of the link element during reciprocation of the same, an upper lateral arm portion extending from the shaft, a reciprocable bar element pivotally connected to the upper lateral arm and including lateral abutment portions thereon, said indexing rods including a second lateral abutment portion disposed in the path of reciprocation of the abutment portions of the bar element engagement therebetween causing said indexing rod to rotate about its longitudinal axis and activate the visual tab assemblies.

A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, and reset means including portions engageable with the visual tab assemblies and the actuating means for returning previously activating tab assemblies to a reset position for subsequent activation, said visual indicator tab means comprising a plurality of vertically extending magazine assemblies extending from an upper end portion of the frame member and including therein a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies equal to the number of keys disposed in a single row of numerical tabulating keys on the keyboard of the adding machine type cash register, one magazine assembly including therein visual tab assemblies comparable to the item and total tabulating keys of the keyboard of the cash register, each of said visual tab assemblies including a pivotal latch portion engageable with the indexing means, and a vertically reciprocable, resiliently urged indexing tab portion detachably engaging the latch portion of the tab assembly, said actuating means comprising an elongated reciprocable link element including an intermediate cam portion, a transverse support shaft journaled on said frame member, cam follower means on the support shaft engageable with the cam portion of said link element engagement therebe tween causing rotary movement of said cam follower, the resetting means including a lever element extending laterally from the support shaft and rotatable therewith, a vertically reciprocable, resiliently urged guide rod carried on the support frame member and including a lower end portion connected to the rotatable lever, a transverse sup port bar carried on an upper portion of the guide rod, a plurality of blade elements extending laterally from the support bar adjacent each magazine assembly and including an abutment edge portion engageable with the activated vertically reciprocable resiliently urged tab portions for engaging the same with the pivoted latch portions of the visual tab assemblies resulting in lowering said tab portions.

A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, reset means including portions engageable with the visual ta-bassemblies and the actuating means for returning previously activating tab assemblies to a reset position for subsequent activation, second visual indicator tab means including visual tab assemblies corresponding to those of the first mentioned visual indicator tab means, and including force transmitting means extending between the visual tab assemblies of the visual indicator tab means permitting simultaneous activation of corresponding visual tab assemblies, said visual tab assemblies including oppositely disposed indicia means permitting observation of each recording operation from both the front and rear portions of the attachment, and de-activation means engageable with the actuating means preventing activation of the indexing and reset means and permitting independent use of the cash register exclusive of the attachment, said actuation means comprising an elongated reciprocable link element having one end portion thereof connectable to operating linkage of the cash register, said link element including means thereon for sequentially actuating the indexing and reset means, said de-activation means comprising a crank assembly journaled on a side portion of the frame member, said crank assembly including a lever portion engageable with the link element permitting free reciprocable movement thereof without engagement and actuation of the indexing and reset means.

A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, and actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the adding machine type cash register, said visual indicator tab means comprising a plurality of vertically extending magazine assemblies extending from an upper end portion of the frame member and including therein a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies equal to the number of keys disposed in a single row of numerical tabulating keys on the keyboard of the cash register, one magazine assembly including therein visual tab assemblies comparable to the item and total tabulating keys of the keyboard of the cash register, each of said visual tab assemblies including a pivotal latch portion engageable with the indexing means, and a vertically reciprocable, resiliently urged indicia tab portion detachably engaging the latch portion of the tab assembly, the one magazine assembly including an independently actuatable total-indicia tab assembly, a crank lever element pivotally supported on the one magazine assembly and including one end portion engageable with the pivotal latch portion of the total-indicia tab assembly and a second end portion disposed in overlying relationship to the portion of the actuating means, said portion of the actuating means including a vertically displaceable abutment element engageable with the second end portion of the crank lever element, and force transmitting means including a portion engageable with the vertically displaceable abutment element, said force transmitting means including a portion engageable with the operating linkage of the total and sub-total tabulating key linkage of the cash register permitting activation of the total-indicia tab assembly.

A visual indicating attachment for cash registers or the like comprising a support frame member, visual indicator tab means supported on said frame member and including visual tab assemblies corresponding to the keyboard of a cash register, indexing means on the support frame member engageable with the visual tab assemblies and including force transmitting means engageable with an indexing portion of the cash register for simultaneous movement therewith, and actuating means including a portion engageable with reciprocable power means of the cash register, said actuating means including a portion engageable with the indexing means for activation of the same after the indexing means has been indexed for disposing visual tab assemblies in an observation position during each recording operation of the cash register, said visual indicator tab means comprising a plurality of vertically extending magazine assemblies extending from an upper end portion of the frame member and including therein a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies equal to the number of keys disposed in a single row of numerical tabulating keys on the keyboard of the cash register, one magazine assembly including therein visual tab assemblies corresponding to the item and total tabulating keys of the keyboard of the cash register, each of said visual tab assemblies including a pivotal latch portion engageable with the indexing means, and a vertically reciprocable, resiliently urged indicia tab portion detachably engaging the latch portion of the tab assembly, and means for deactivating said actuating means thereby preventing activation of said indexing means and said visual tab assemblies during operation of the cash register.
9. In a cash register, a reciprocable power means, a keyboard having a plurality of rows of keys and a total key, a visual indicating attachment including a visual indicator tab means having an indicator tab magazine assembly for each row of keys, a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies in each magazine assembly of the same number as the number of keys in a row thereof and each including indicia portions adapted to be selectively activated into observation position, a rotatable and reciprocal indexing means for each row of keys and an indicator tab magazine assembly, said indexing means being reciprocally indexed by punching of said keys, actuating means driven by said power means for rotating said indexing means during each recording operation to permit operation of a visual tab assembly and activation of a corresponding indicia portion into observation position, reset means including portions engageable with said visual tab assemblies for returning previously activated indicia portions to a reset position for subsequent activation, means for drivingly connecting said actuating means and said reset means, and deactivation means engageable with said actuating means to prevent same from driving said indexing and reset means, thereby permitting independent use of the cash register without operating said visual indicating attachment.

In a cash register, a reciprocable power means, said reciprocable power means operating said cash register through one cycle of operation by a single forward stroke and a single reverse stroke, a keyboard having a plurality of rows of keys and a total key, a visual indicating attachment including a visual indicator tab means having an indicator tab magazine assembly for each row of keys, a plurality of juxtaposed visual tab assemblies in each magazine assembly of the same number as the number of keys in a row thereof and each including indicia portions adapted to be selectively activated into observation position, a rotatable and reciprocal indexing means for each row of keys and an indicator tab magazine assembly, said indexing means being reciprocally indexed by punching of said keys, actuating means driven by said power means for rotating said indexing means during each recording operation to permit operation of a visual tab assembly and activation of a corresponding indicia portion into observation position, reset means including portions engageable with said visual tab assemblies for returning previously activated indicia portions to a reset position for subsequent activation, means for drivingly connecting said actuating means and said reset means, said actuating means operating said indexing and reset means during the forward stroke of said reciprocable power means, and deactivation means engageable with said actuating means to prevent same from driving said indexing and reset means, thereby permitting independent use of the cash register without operating said visual indicating attachment.
