PROCESS, OF MARKING CAKES OF SOAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,913, dated September 9, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES M. CRAIG, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Process and Apparatus for Marking Cakes of Soap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a set of dies and their connecting-rod,the cake of soap being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a part of the same, the connecting-rod being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a completed cake of soap.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved process for marking cakes of soap with ornamental or fanciful designs with the name of the manufacturer, jobber, or dealer, or with other advertisements.

The invention consists in casting the bodies of the cakes of soap in molds, around dies placed upon a rod, then when the soap is hard withdrawing the rod and dies, then placing the apertured cakes in a mold covering the ends of the die-apertures and one end of the rod-aperture, and then pouring liquid soap of a different color from the said cakes into the uncovered end of the rod-aperture, as will be hereinafter fully described.

In carrying my improved process into practical effect, dies A, representing the letters, figures,or other designs to be formed in the cakes of soap, and made of a length equal to the intended thickness of the'said cakes of soap, are arranged upon a rod, B, which passes through all of said dies, and upon which the said dies fit with sufficient tightness to keep them in proper position. The dies A and rod B are then placed in molds, and liquid soap is then poured into the said molds and allowed to harden. The cakes of soap are then removed from the molds, the dies A and rod B are withdrawn, and the cakes are placed in molds, which are so formed as to close the apertures formed by the dies at both ends and the aperture formed by the rod at one end, and liquid soap of a different color from the body of the cakes is poured into the exposed aperture until all the apertures are filled. After the soap has hardened the cakes are removed from the dies and are trimmed and polished for market. The designs thus formed extend entirely through the cakes of soap, and will remain distinct until the said cakes are used up.

I am aware that cakes of soap have heretofore been ornamented or marked by placing Within a mold other hollow open molds in the form of designs or letters, and filling the outer and inner molds with liquid soap of different colors, and then removing the inner molds while the soap is in a plastic condition but this differs from my process, and such Ido not claim; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The process for marking soap, essentially as described,which consists in first placing solid or closed dies representing letters or designs in order upon a rod, then placing the dies and rod within a mold and casting around them the soap required to form the body of 7 2.- In an apparatus for forming cakes of soap,

the combination, with a mold, of dies or types having holes or openings passing through them, said dies or types forming designs or letters, and a rod adapted to pass through said openings in the dies and hold them in proper po sition within said mold, substantially as shown and described.
