Description

O. NEUBERT.
Process of Making Patterns 0r Copies of Statuary and t other Figures in Wax.
No. 223,603. Patented Jan. 13,1880.
e0 0.x Thmk wk N.PETEHS. PnolO-LITHOQRAFHER. WASHINGTON. 0 C4 V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
OSCAR NEUBERT, OF NEWTOWN, NEW YORK.
PROCESS OF MAKING PATTERNS 0R COPIES OF STATUARY AND OTHER FIGURES IN WAX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,603, dated January 13, 1880. Application filed December 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSQAR. NEUBERT, of Newtown, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Process of Making Patterns or Oopies of Statuary and other Figures in Wax, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a piece of statuary as it appears after being dipped according to my invention. Fig. 2 shows the same after being trimmed.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a certain novel process of making patterns, in wax or analogous material, of hollow figuresas statuary-to cast from and reproduce in metal, such pattern being also adapted to other uses, as to represent copies of the figures.
The customaryway of making patterns of statuary for casting is to obtain a reverse of the figure or part of the figure to be reproduced with plasterofiparis, and cover the face thereof with a layer of clay, and then spread or cast over the Whole a sufficient quantity of plaster-of-paris to form one part or section of a mold, of which the reverse first named forms the other section. The plaster is allowed to set, and then the two sect-ions referred to are taken apart and the clay is removed. The sections are then again put together, and molten wax or analogous material is poured between them in sutficient quantity to fill the space left by the removal of the clay. In this manner there is formed a layer of wax, which constitutes a pattern to be cast from in metal by embedding the same in sand, in the usual way.
In carrying out my invention I take the part A, which is or contains the reverse of the figure to be reproduced, and dip the same in wax or analogous material, thereby coating the same with a layer of such material, as at B, Fig. l. I repeat this operation a number of timesnamely, until a layer of the required thickness the mold heretofore used, and thus save both labor and material.
Another advantage gained is, that the pattern obtained by my invention has a uniform thickness, to obtain which was heretofore impracticable, owing to the dificulty'in volved in spreading the clayin an even layer on the face of the reverse.
It is obvious that the my invention may be used to represent copies of the figures from which the reverse is taken, in lieu of being used to cast from, and, if desirable, the wax adhering to what I have termed the reverse may be pressedbetween the face thereof and a second face or reverse to reproduce ornaments, such as leaves.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process of making patterns for casting or copies of statuary, consisting in dipping the pattern obtained by part from which the pattern or copy is to be made in wax or analogous material, thereby coating the part with a layer of such material, said part being or containing the reverse of the figure which is to be reproduced, and then removing the surplus wax, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of November, 1879.
