Description

(No Model.) S
F. SGHUMANN.
HAND ELEVATOR FOR PACKAGES, 850. No. 304,866. Patented Sept. 9, 1884.
WITNESSES INVENTOR BY fil A; gmda ATTORNEYS.
UNrrEn STATES PATENT @rrrcs.
FRANK SOHIIMANN, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
HAND-ELEVATOR FOR PACKAGES, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,866, dated September 9, 1884.
Application filed July 19, 183-1. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it rmty concern.-
Be it known that I,-FRANK SOHUMANN, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Elevator for Packages, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device for use in depositing packages and small articles upon elevated shelving, and also for taking articles down therefrom, so as to dispense with the use of a step-ladder for those purposes.
7 It consists in a rod provided with an adjustable and a pivoted clampingarin, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.
'A is a non-flexible rod of suitable material and of any suitable length.
B is an arm attached to a collar, a, on the rod, the collar being loose, so as to slide, and kept from turning by a slide-piece, g, fitted in a groove, 1), in the rod and engaged by the setscrew 0, that also serves for clamping the collar and arm in place. i
- O is an arm pivoted at one end to a forked ferrule, d, attached on the upper end of rod A, so that the outer end of arm 0 may swing freely to and from the arm B.
e is a wire rod or pull, connected to arm 0 and extending through guideeyesf down to near the lower end of rod A, so that it can be used to raise and lower the arm 0.
At 9 is shown a spring, connected to a hook on the rear end of arm G and to the rod A, so that the spring tends to raise the arm. This spring is, however, not essential, except when .a cord is substituted for the rod 6, as may sometimes be preferred.
In using the elevator, the package or article is placed between the two arms 13 O and held tightly by drawing down on the pull 6. The package can then be raised and readily deposited on a shelf or other elevated receptacle. Packages can be easily picked up and taken down from a shelf in the same manner, thus saving a large amountof time and labor.
The arm B, being movable, can be adjusted for packages of different sizes, and to prevent slipping, the outer end of arm O is roughened, as shown.
The rod or pull a can be connected to arm 0 at either side of the fulcrum-pin.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The package-elevator, consisting of a rod, A, provided with a rigid arm, B, and pivoted arm 0, substantially as described.
2. In a packagerelevator, the adjustable arm B and collar 0, combined with rod A and arm 0, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the rod A, fixed arm B, pivoted arm 0, and the wire or equivalent pull 0, substantially as described.
4. In a package-elevator, the spring 5/ and pull 0, combined with hinged arm 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
FRANK SGHUMANN.
