Description

July 17, 1962 B. SURLOFF DISPLAY PACKAGE FOR DISC -LIKE OBJECTS Filed 000. 27, 1960 Fists 3 s44 sis DISPLAY PACKAGE ron nrsotrkn earners Bernard Siurlofi, 9424 Carlyle Ave, Miami Beach 54, Fla. Filed on. 27, 1960, Ser. No. 65,448
3 Claims. c1. 206-80) 7 My invention relates to packaging and is directed particularly to an improved package construction for disc like objects.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved display package which combines utilitarian structural features with unusually attractive ornamental eifect, thereby increasing sales appeal of the displayed object.
A more particular object is to provide a display pack age of the character described wherein the disc-like object packaged is secured between portions of a pair of face-toface display card members and wherein the object projects through an opening in the front card, the opening having a plurality peripheral outwardly-bent portions simulating petals of a flower the center of which is represented by the packaged object.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a display packag of the above nature which is suitable for merchandising round objects, especially those objects which are colorful or scented, or both colorful and scented.
Yet another object is to provide a merchandising display device of the above nature which is simple in construction, easy to assemble, well adapted to compact pack aging for shipment and storage, pilfer-proof when on dis play, and which has unusual sales appeal.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings, wherein like reference numbers denote corresponding parts throughout'the several views,
FIG. 1 is a front view of a display package embodying the invention,
FIG. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the display package of FIG. 1, taken along the line 2-2 thereof in the direction of the arrows,
FIG. 3 is a plan View of the inside of the display card forming part of the display package, a portion of one side being broken away, illustrating the die-cut pattern therein which provides the opening for the object to be packaged,
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the inside of the display card, showing the die-cut petal members bent outwardly and the object to be packaged resting on the opposite half of the display card prior to folding together of the two halves thereof in enclosing relation to the object,
FIG. 5 is perspective view illustrating how the front half of the card is folded over against the back half with the object in position to project through the opening just prior to securing the transparent envelope of the object therebetween in sandwiched relation, and
FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view similar to FIG. 2 illustrating the packaging of a flanged disc-like object.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 10 designates an elongated rectangular card, preferably of cardboard, having a front half 11 and a back half 12 divided by a score line 13 facilitating folding together of said front and back halves as hereinbelow described. The front half 11 of the card 10 is provided with a round opening 14, extending outwardly of the periphery of which are a plurality of integrally connected petal-like members 15. As illustrated in FIG. 3, the opening 14 with the petal-like members 15 is preferably formed by a press operation die cutting the front half 11 of the card 10 with a plurality of short cuts 16 equidistantly spaced about the periphery of said opening, a plurality of radial cuts 17 extending 3,044,51 Patented July 17, 1962 ire the petal-like members 15 are folded outwardly and back against the front face of the front half 11 of the card 10. When subsequently released, the petal-like members 15 will stand out at an angle of about 30 degrees with respect to the front surface of the card half 11 as is best illustrated in FIG. 2.
In assembling a disc-like object D to the display package, it is first placed in a comparatively large transparent envelope 19, preferably of cellophane, after which the card 10 is folded against itself, withthe cellophane enclosed object D in between, along the score line 13. so that the front and back halves 11, 12 thereof sandwich the object in place with the front portion thereof protruding through the opening 14 (see FIGS. 1, 2, 4 and 5).
The package thus formed will then be secured together in any convenient manner, preferably by means of staples .20 extending through the front and back halves 11, 12
bly by suitable automatic means will serve to press out the petal-like members 15 and hold them in outwardly-inclined position. Thus, as illustrated in FIG. 2, the periphenal edge of the object D when assembled abuts against the inner edges 15a] of the petal-like members 15 formed by the cuts 16 thereof to retain said petal-like members in the position illustrated.
As illustrated in FIG. 1, the front of display package, i.e., the front half 11 of the card 10, is preferably printed about the periphery of the opening 14 with the likeness of flower petals, as indicated at 21, whereby the simulation of a flower bloom created by the central disc-like object D and the petal-like members 15 is enhanced. If the object packaged is colorful, or scented, or both colorful and scented, the simulation of a flower will be still further enhanced, to produce an attractive display package with unusual sales appeal. A small opening 22 is provided centrally at the upper end of the display card for convenience in hanging on a rod or hook.
FIG. 6 illustrates the invention as applied to the packaging of a flanged disc-like object F. In this instance, the
flange portion 23 of the object F serves to retain the object securely in place.
While there is described and illustrated herein only one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice, it will be understood that this form is given by Way of example only, and not in a limiting sense. The invention, in brief, includes all the modifications and variations thereof coming within the scope and spirit of the following claims:
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a display package for disc-like objects, the combination comprising a pair of fiat, flexible card-like members, a circular opening in the first of said card-lik members, a plurality of petal-like members extending radially outwardly of the peripheral margin of said opening at one side of said first card member in the direction away from said opening and integrally joined with said first card member, means securing one side of the second card like member in face-to-face relation against the other side of said first card-like member, and means for sandwiching the object between said card-like members with a opening, said petal-like members being formed by a first plurality of through cuts in said card-like member equally spaced in end-to-end relation about said peripheral margin, a second plurality of through cuts in said card-like member extending radially with respect to the center of said opening from within and terminating one each at a position between the ends of said first plurality of cuts, and a central, multi-pointed star cut out of said card-like member the apex of one each of said star points terminating at the inner end of one each of said radially extending cuts.
2. In a display package for disc-like objects, the combination comprising a pair of flat, flexible card-like members, a circular opening in the first of said card-like members, a plurality of petal-like members extending radially outwardly of the peripheral margin of said opening at one side of said first card member in the direction away from said opening and integrally joined with said first card member, an envelope enclosing the object packaged, said object being of substantially the same size as said opening, and means securing one side of the second card-like member in face-to-face relation against the other side of said first card-like member, said envelope being sandwiched between said card-like members with the object therein projecting through said opening, said petal-like members being formed by a first plurality of through cuts in said card-like member equally spaced in end-to-end relation about said peripheral margin, a second plurality of through cuts in said card-like member extending radially with respect to the center of said opening from within and terminating one each at a position between the ends of said first plurality of cuts, and a central, multi-pointed star out out of said card-like member, the apex of one each of said star points terminating at the inner end of one each of said radially extending cuts.
3. A display package for disc-like objects as defined in claim 2 wherein said enclosing envelope is of a transparent material and wherein said securing means comprises fasteners extending through said first and second card-like members and corner portions of said envelope.
