PULLEY BLOGK. N0.w3704,103. Patented Aug. 26, 1884.
- UNITED STATES PATnT JOHN B. F. HERRESHOFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIATNI H. NICHOLS, AND GEORGE H. NICHOLS, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
PULLEY-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,163, dated August 26, 1884. I
Application filed May 22, 1884.
To @ZZ whom t maf/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. F. Hnnnns- HOFF, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Pulleys for Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the aecompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in hoisting-pulleys, which consist, first, in placing the axle of the sheave in adjustable metal boxes having long bearing-surfaces, so as to make long` bearings for the aXle; secondly, in connecting these boxes to a forked metal strap, in such a manner that when one part of their inner surface is worn by the friction of the axle they Ina-y easily be turned so as to present a new bearing-surface; and, thirdly, in
Y attaching to this forked metal strap, which straddles and supports the sheave, u tongue which projects downwardly into the groove of the sheeve and prevents the rope from slipping off.
In the accompanying drawings, which clearly 25 show my invention, Figure l is a side elevation; and Fig. 2, a section on the line c c, Fig. 1.
The sheave A is rigidly mounted upon along axle, B, the ends of which enter metal pockets or boxes C, each of which is provided with an opening, a, to allow of the axle being oiled. rIhese boxes C are held in place by the forked suspension-strap D, to which they are secured by screws LZ. This forked strap passes over the sheave, und is provided at its upper part' with a hook, c, or other suitable means, by which it may be suspended from a hoisting- (No model.)
geil' or other beam or holder. Should the boxes C become worn so as to allow the sheave to shake, it is only necessary to loosen the screws d, turn the boxes so that a new bearing-surface is presented, and .again to tighten the screws. As this may be repeated a considerable number of times, it may easily be seen that this pulley will ontlast u. great nun1- ber of the old kind, which were entirely useless after the holes in their shells were once worn.
To prevent the rope F from slipping, I attach to the forked strap D a tongue, E, which projects downwardly into the groove of the sheave, forming a channel, within which the rope F is confined. The strap D holds the boxes C stationery, straddles the sheave A, and allows the axle B to revolve freely within said boxes.
I claiml. The combination of the metal boxes C with the forked strap D, axle B, and shea-ve A, substantially as and f or the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the metal boxes C with the sheave A, axle B, strap D, und clamping-screws d, substantially as und for the purL pose specified.
3. The combination of thc tongue E with the forked strap D and grooved pulley A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JN O. B. F. HERRESHOFF.
