COMBINED SPOON HOLDER AND KNIFE REST. No; 304,039.

FRANK B. SMITH, OF NOR-TH SPRING-FIELD, MISSOUR I.
COMBlNED SPOON-HOLDER AND KNIFE-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,039, dated August 26, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Spoon- Holders and KnifeRests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a new and useful combined spoon-holder and knife-rest, the object of which is to provide an adjustable, cheap, simple, durable, and ornamental device for attaching to soup-dishes, plates, and other vessels to hold or support a spoon or knife, so as to prevent its slipping into the dish or dripping out side. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation showing the device attached to a vessel. Fig. 3 is a similar view. Fig. 2 is a view of the same detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
F is an ordinary spoon, dish.
13 O D G- I represent the device, preferably made of wire, composed of any suitable material, to be bent, twisted, and formed as hereinafter explained.
B is a support, or the part of the device for holding and supporting the spoon. It is composed of two jaws, b b, for clasping the small part f of a spoon, and is preferably made of material that will spring, so as more easily to receive a spoon, and it has a spring-loop, N, to make it self-adjusting to different-sized spoons.
G is a bow, forming a spring-clasp to receive the edge of a vessel to secure the device thereto. On the upper part of this bow is formed a spring-fork, I I, for receiving the blade of a knife and holding it.
D is an expansion on the lower outer end of the spring clasp or how 0. It is to prevent the device from turning or twisting to either side.
E alknife, and H a G is a hook on the lower part of the expansion D, for supporting any desired utensil.
The device may be constructed of any desired metal. I prefer to form it of one piece of wire by bending it at its middle g and. twisting or winding the wires or ends about each other long enough to be bent for forming wires, and thus forming a spring-catch for a kniferest. The wires or ends are again twisted together and bent to fit over the top of the vessel down on the inside, to form a clasp at a point, 0", opposite to the expansion, and then bent up inward to a point near I I. The wires are then bent, diverging to form a spring-loop, b, and, preferably on a level with the top of the vessel, they cross each other and extend outward sidewise, forming a fiat surface for the spoon to rest upon, and also the blade of a knife when the spoon is removed. At the points b If (about the width of the small part f of a spoon) the wires are again turned back, and, coming near each other, are again slanted outward and again turn in, with the ends turned and rolled back upon themselves, Z) N, as shown.
The device is placed upon a vessel by taking hold of the support 13 and hook G and open ing the clasp formed by the bow It may thus be easily secured to any vessel. Thus secured a knife may be placed and securely held in the fork I I,while the part of the blade extending over the dish or vessel may rest in the spoon-support, out of the way of the contents of the vessel. The hook G is useful in placing and removing the device, as well as for supporting articles on the outside of the vessel. On soup-dishes, when desired, the fork for the knife may be dispensed with; but it is preferably formed as above set forth.
At the upper middle part of 6- Having thus described the construction and combined with a spring-fork, I I, and spring use of my invention, What I claim as new, and bow O, substantially as set forth. I 5 desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4. The device composed of Wire twisted and 1. A combined spoonsupport and knifebent to form a hook, G, bow C, fork II, spring- 5 rest composed of a hook, G, expansion 1), loop b and jaws b b, all substantially as and spring-bow G, spring-fork I I, and support B, for the purpose set forth. havingaspring-loop, I), substantially as shown In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in 20 and described. presence of two witnesses. 2. A spoon-support comprising a support T to having jaws Z) I), a spring-loop, if, and a spring- FRALK SMITH clasp, 0, having an expansion, 1), all substan- \Vitnesses: tially as shown and described. S. A. HAZELTINE,
3. A support, 13, having a spring-loop, 7), J. D. VAN BIBBER.
