Description

UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
CHARLES CARLISLE, OF IVOODSTOCK, VERMONT.
NAIL-HAMMER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 30,386, dated October 16, 18G0.
To @l whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CARLISLE, of Voodstock, in the county of IVindSor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nail-Hammers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My improvement in the nail-hammer, consists in combining therewith a link-shaped angular lever, (0,) of the proper propor tions, by means of suitable fulcrum pins which pass through the opposite angles of said lever into the head of the hammer, in the manner represented in the drawings.
The short legs of the lever c, should be of such a length that the bar d, which unites their extremities, will extend about half the distance from the eye of the hammer to the face of its head; and the long legs of said lever, should be of such a length that the curved head which unites their extremities, will be thrown to such a position upon the handle of the hammer as will enable the user thereof to place his thumb on the said lever-head in handling the hammer. The lever c, may also be combined with all de scriptions of hand-hatchets. The shape of the lever c, may be varied to suit the taste or judgment of the manufacturer or user of the hammer or hatchet.
The object of combining the lever c, with a hammer or hatchet, will be readily under- Stood by all persons who are accustomed to use those useful articles, viz: to start and drive a nail with one hand, at times when it is impossible to use the other hand for hold ing the nail; or, when it is desirable to start and drive a nail at the extreme length of reach of the actuating hand of the operator.
The position in which a nail can be held by the assistance of the lever c, is represented by the red lines in Fig. l; and when held in this position, it will be perceived that, with one hand, the operator can first strike the point of the nail into the desired place, and then, with the Same hand, drive it home.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Combining an angular lever with a nailhammer or hatchet, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
The above specification of my new and useful improvement in nail-hammers, signed and witnessed this 18th day of September 1860.
CHARLES CARLISLE.
