Description
J. H. GOULD.
Corn Husker.
( Patented May 13,- 1856.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. H. GOULD, OF SMITH, OHIO.
HUSKING-THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,864, dated May 13, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. H. GOULD, of Smith, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful device to be used in Husking Corn, which I call a Husking-Thimble; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of one of my husking thimbles placed on the middle finger of the hand. Fig. 2, is a top view of the same separate from the finger. Fig. 3, is an end View, and Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures, refer to like parts.
The object of my invention is to lessen the difficulty and facilitate the operation of husking corn and at the same time protect the finger employed in opening and drawing off the husks.
The nature of my invention consists in a device resembling the end of a human finger, said device being placed on the end of the natural finger like an ordinary sewing thimble, and the nail on the same used in the same manner as the natural finger nail is now used for opening the husk.
To enable others to fully understand my invention and make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more definitely.
In constructing the husking thimble I employ a thimble A, very similar in form to those used in sewing, as is evident from the drawing, and weld or otherwise form an artificial metal finger-nail B, on the upper side of its forward extremity, in the manner represented.
By examining the drawing it will be seen that the nail B, is curved or turned down slightly; this is done in order to give it the proper direction in entering the husk and adapt it to the movement of the natural finger in opening the husk.
The thimble A, is made with the part a, which rests on the back of the finger, long enough to reach beyond the first joint of the natural finger, in order that it may be kept on the finger. And with the part b, which comes under the front of the natural finger not long enough to extend to the first joint, in order that the finger may be closed down upon the husks without pressing the thimble off the finger, or injure the finger by the pressure thereon.
This device is very simple, and cheap and has been found very convenient and useful, as it enables a person to husk corn much easier and faster and saves his fingers from being made sore from constant contact with the husks, and thus enables him to perform a much greater amount of work than he is able to perform without it, in a given time, and also to work, a greater length of time without being inconvenienced.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The device herein shown, resembling the end of a human finger and formed by providing a thimble A, very similar in construction to a sewing thimble and welding or otherwise forming an artificial finger nail B, on the upper side of its forward extremity, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
