In hair curlers of the known type, the body of the curler usually consists of a more or less rigid and there- In order to prevent such hard curlers from becoming obnoxious when worn at night, the curler body was covered with a soft material, for example, grooved rubber, sponge rubber, or resilient plastic. Despite such covering the use of such curlers especially at night is rather unpleasant to the wearer.

The known hair curlers also are usually provided with an elastic tightening string which is permanently secured at one end of the curler body and may, when tightened, be attached with its other end to the other end of the curler body. For making this elastic string easily releasable from the curler body, the known curlers are either provided with a bifurcated recess at the free end of the curler body into which the elastic string is hooked or the elastic string is provided at its free end with a cap which may be fitted upon a corresponding portion on the end of the curler body.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a hair curler which overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages in a very simple and effective manner by making the curler body of a web of knitted, woven or braided monofilar threads of synthetic material which are wound up into a roll which is preferably sewed up along its edges. For connecting the removable ends of the elastic tightening string, a spike or hairpin is inserted into the curler body, and the curler body is provided with a thin wire core which extends partly or entirely through the entire length of the curler body and is irremovably secured at one end to the elastic string.

Apart from its simple manipulation, it is a particular advantage of the hair curler according to the invention that the body of the curler is completely soft and elastic, but still of a stable shape. The body of the curler is preferably made of a web consisting of a wide grid mesh, whereby a curler of a high elasticity and softness will be attained.

The above-mentioned objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will also become apparant from the following description of one preferred embodiment of the invention and from an inspection of the accompanying drawing theerof.

In this drawing, which shows a section of the new hair curler the body 1 of the new hair curler consists of a loose web made from knitted, woven, or braided monofilar threads of synthetic material. When this web 1 is rolled together, it is designed to contain a thin wire core 2 having an eyelet 3 at its outer end projecting a short distance from web 1. The tightening string 4 is firmly secured at one end to eyelet 3, while its other end is secured to a relatively large eyelet 5 of a hairpin 6. After the string 4 has been tightened, this latter hairpin 6 may be inserted into the free end of the rolled up web 1.

Although my invention has been illustrated and described with reference to the preferred embodiments thereof, I wish to have it understood that it is in no way limited to the details of such embodiments, but is capable of numerous modifications within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus fully disclosed my invention, what I claim is:

A hair curler comprising, in combination, an interlaced open mesh web made from monofilar threads of synthetic material, said web being rolled up upon itself into a substantially filled up cylindrical roll; a thin wire core member extending substantially coaxial with and through a substantial portion of the length of said roll, said core member having at least one portion extending transversely to the axis of said roll for anchoring said core member in the inner portions of said rolled up web and having an end portion projecting beyond one end of said roll; a pin-like member insertable with one end thereof into the other end of said roll; and an elastic string connected at opposite ends thereof to said projecting end portion of said core member and to the other end of said pin-like member so that upon insertion of said pin-like member into the other end of said roll and substantially coaxial therewith, said string will be tightened against the exterior of said roll to secure a strand of hair wound about said roll exclusively by said string against the exterior of said roll.
