United States Patent 01 3,035,588 HAIR CURLER Bernice Helen Krauss, 95 Dora Ave., Waldwick, NJ. Filed Apr. 25, 1960, Ser. No. 24,307 2 Claims. (Cl. 132-42) The present invention relates to a hair curler, and more particularly to a hair curler employed to form or set a particular curl known in the art as a sculpture curl.
In the treatment of the hair by permanent waving, it is well known that a curler is used. After the treatment, the curler must be removed. This disturbs the formation of the curl and requires resetting of the hair. Although many attempts were made to overcome the foregoing difficulties and other difficulties and disadvantages, none, as far as I am aware was entirely successful when carried into practice, even by those skilled in the art.
It has now been discovered that a curler can be provided which requires little skill or practice in handling, which can be readily used to form a curl and after the treatment can be readily removed without disturbing the formation of the curl.
Thus, it is an object of the present invention to provide a curler useful in forming a sculpture curl during the process of permanent waving which is not uncomfortable to the wearer.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a curler which can be readily removed from the hair without disturbing the formed curl.
The invention also contemplates providing a curler which will not slip or unwind, can lock in any position, at or away from the scalp, and yet requires no unwinding or stretching of hair when the treatment is finished.
It is also the purpose of the invention to provide a curler which can be used by persons in the profession, i.e., skilled in the art, in a creative way in accordance with the customary practice of the profession so that there are no new methods or complicated devices to learn.
Among the further objects of the present invention is the provision of a curler which provides complete ventilation and circulation in order to apply solutions for forming curls or to dry the hair.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Generally speaking, the invention in its broader aspects contemplates a hair curler comprising in combination, an annular retaining member, a stem on which said retaining member is mounted; an anchor base having an aperture therethrough and adapted to mate with said stem; and, an anchor bar adapted to penetrate said aperture.
The particular advantages of the above construction as well as other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view illustrating the manner in which the curlers are worn;
FIG. 2a depicts a resilient ringlike hair retaining member useful for the purposes of the present invention;
FIG. 2b illustrates the anchor base of the invention erein contemplated;
FIG. 2c shows the anchor bar herein contemplated;
FIG. 3 is a view of the assembled anchor bar and anchor base herein contemplated;
FIG. 4 illustrates how the device looks like when assembled;
FIG. 5 depicts how a curl is wound on the device; and
3,035,588 Patented May 22, 1962 ice j FIG. 6 is an enlarged view of the device which is worn in FIG. 1.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment, the device or curler 12 has three main sections. The first section includes a resilient iinglike hair retaining member 13. This ringlike hair retaining member 13 is supported on a hollow stem 15 by a pair of spokes 16a and 16b likewise made of a resilient material, and substantially diametrically opposed alone a cone, i.e., the spokes or arms extend outward from the stem at an angle somewhere of the order of 45 towards the ringlike hair retaining member 13. As illustrated in the drawing, the stem 15 has a thin but firm separation member 14 at about the center of stem 15, and a lower hollow portion 17 in said stem. Inside the hollow stem, at the center of separation member 14 is a retaining hole 18 to retain a corresponding member when placed in said hollow stem. The hollow portion of stem 15 is adapted to receive a mating portion of anchor base 19 which has the retaining member 20 corresponding to retaining hole 18 so that when member 20 enters said retaining hole it Will be held therein. On the part of anchor base 19 which does not enter the hollow stem, there is an opening 21 through the anchor base. This opening receives the anchor 22 which is elongated and tapered so as to pass partially through opening 21 and be retained therein. At one end of the anchor bar 22, preferably at the Wider end, are a plurality of finger grip ridges 23 to facilitate the handling of the anchor bar. Advantageously, the anchor base is also slightly tapered and although readily inserted into the stem will nevertheless be held firmly when the retaining hole and retaining member snap into place. However, the retaining means holding these two pieces should permit some rotation so as to get the hair closer to the scalp when desired.
In forming a curl, the assembled device is used by rotating the hair curler, i.e., by placing the outer end of a strand on the curler and winding the hair on the curler from the outer end and placing it firmly on the scalp for any desired length. When the curl has been formed on the stem, the ringlike hair retaining member is folded over the anchor bar and in this way the curl is firmly held in place. The curler can be used for the complete procedure in permanent waving from start to finish, application, forming, processing, neutralizing, rinsing, including drying the hair under a drier with the curlers to the stage of combout. To remove the device, all that has to be done is to remove the anchor bar. This can be done without disturbing the curl. In this way, by using the present curler, the desired styling is immediately accomplished without resetting.
Although the hair curler herein described is intended primarily for those skilled in the art of beauty treatment, the device may also be used for home permanent waving. In fact, the curler is useful with any type of hair waving treatment using a curler, e.g., chemical, heat, the disposition of the ringlike hair retaining member makes the application of chemicals to the hair from the top particularly easy.
It is to be observed therefore that the hair curler herein contemplated advantageously comprises the combination of a pair of spokes extending from a resilient nnglike hair retaining member along a conical diameter to a hollow axial stem having a separation member at about the center of the stem, said separation member having one part of a snap fastener thereon. Adapted to mate with said hollow axial stem is an anchor base on which is the other portion of the snap fastener, said anchor base having an aperture therethrough on the other part to receive an anchor bar adapted to penetrate said aperture; whereby, the hair to be curled is wound on said mated stem and base between said anchor and said ringlike hair retaining member, the ring of said ringlike retaining member being then stretched back over said anchor bar to be held by said anchor bar until said hair is set, the hair curler being readily removed from the hair by taking the anchor bar out of said aperture in said anchor base. The hair curler herein contemplated may be manufactured by simple operations and may be of rubber, plastic, or both and should withstand the effects of chemicals, heat and hair treatment.
Although the present invention has been described in conjunction with preferred embodiments, it is to be understood that modifications and variations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as those slc'lled in the art will readily understand. Such modifications and variations are considered to be within the purview and scope of the invention and appended claims.
