Description

O. L. REHN. IASTENER FOR METALLIC KEYS, 6w.
Patented Oct. 9, 1860.
UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
U. L. llllllN,'()l: llllLAIJELPIIIA, IIFEKNSYLVANIA, ASSlGNOH TO JrLUCAS (30., (ll? SAME PLACE.
FASTENING Fo-R METALLIC 'KEGS.
Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. 30,35.0, dated October 9, 17560.
To (ZZZ whom it may cancer/i:
. Be it known that I ,CAsPAR L. RIiH-N, of the city o't' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Inniroved Fastcner for Metallic Regs; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and ex act description of the same, reterence'being had to the accompanying drawings'and to the lettra's of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to the peculiar construction of a metal bar forming a fastener for securing the lids of metallic kegs, such as-arc used for containing mixed paints, &c., and the said fastener consists ol a plate having two projecting arms, one or both of which has a rounded end, both having notches', and the whole being otherwise constructed as describcd hereinafter, for attachmentto and detachment from certain staples on the edge of the keg by the nnet-hod hereinafter explained. In order to enable othersto make and use my invention, ll will now'procecd to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the a-ccon'i 'ianyin g drz'rwings, f
which form a part cl this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views of part of thcbody with the cover of a metallic ,keg illustrating my improved fastening for the same; Fig. 3,
aplan view; Fig. 4:, a transverse section of the fastening'bar, on the line 1 2, Fig.3; Fig. 5, a view of one-of thc'staples for receiving the ends of the 't'astcning har.
A .rian-esents the upper end of amctallic keg, such as is' used for containing mixed paints, &'c., nu.- cdge of the keg being furnished onthe inside with the annular stiffenlug-rih (1. l; is'thc cover, consisting of a metal disk having on its outer edge an annularllange. b, tit-ting over the edge of thekcg, the cover being made of tinned plate or other material capable of yielding under pressure, and recovering its original position after theremoval of that pressure. Near the upper edge, and on opposite sides of the keg, are
secured the staples-l) and I), having openings for receiving the notched ends of the fastener E, which consists of. an annular plate, f, with two projecting arms. 0 and e, as best observed on reference to the plan View, Fig. 3, the un' der side of the annular port-ion of the fastener projecting below the under side of .the arms,
cover.
as seen in the sectional view, Figs. 11 and .2. After the cover has been fitted over the edge of the keg one of the arms a of thefas'tener is inserted into the opening of one of the staples D,-the end of the arm projecting through its staple, asseen in Fig. 1, and this to such an extent that when the fastener is depressed the opposite arm (1' will assume that positionin respect to the opposite stapleD represented in red lines, Fig. 1. By thus depressing the fastener its annular portion f will hear on the cover B, causing the same to yield.
It will. be observed that the ends of both fi'lTlllS are notched at "y and rounded at As seen in Fig. 1, therounded arm a is presented to the opening in the staple I), so that on imparting a smart blow to the end of the opposite arm 6 the end of the arm 0 will pass directly into the opening. of the staple, its passage being ;has to he removed, one arm of the fastener is depressed to an extent sufiicient to remove its notch from its hold ont'he staple, when it may be pushed back through the opening of the said staple to the posit-ion shown in red lines, Fig. 1, after which the fastener is readily re-- moved, thus allowing for the removal 'of the As the fastener l'orinsno permanent part of the keg, but is detachable therefrom, it may be readily applied to any other keg, that from which it has been removed being used as an ordinary paint-pot by connecting the usual handle to the staples I) and D. l
I wish it to be understood that. I do not claim, broadly, the employment of wind or bar with its" end held in staples attached to the mouth of a vessel for thepurpose of'confining the cover, several modifications of such a device having been heretofore used; but
I limit my claim to and desire 'to secure Letters Patent for V 1 The fastener E. composed of the plate f and its two arms,'e and'e, when one or both of the In testimony whereof I have signed my name said arms have a 1-ounded'-end,m, and each arm to this specification in the presence of two subhas a notch, 3 and when the whole is otherscribing witnesses. Wise constructed, as set forth, for attachment OASPAR L. REHN. to and detachment from the staples D and D Witnesses: on the edge ofthe keg by the method and for HENRY. HOWSON,
the purpose herein described. CHAS. HOWSON.
