Filed Aug. 7, 1959, Ser. No. 832,305 Claims. (Ci. 118-252) The present invention relates to the application of fluid adhesives and, more particularly, to devices for applying thin strips of fluid adhesive at predetermined locations, for example, on the end papers of a book being bound. Typically, the end papers at one face of a book include an inner leaf which initially is cemented to an outer portion of the book as a fly leaf, an outer leaf which ultimately is cemented to the cover as a lining and a zig-zag intermediate fold, sections of which are cemented together. In order that these sections be cemented properly, it is necessary that an adhesive be applied to one of the zig-Zag sections in a strip of predetermined thickness and width. The present invention contemplates a device for applying a strip of adhesive of the foregoing predetermined character.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide, in a device for applying an adhesive in a strip of predetermined thickness and width, a novel association of particularly designed components including generally: a tank for containing a quantity of a fluid adhesive; a disk journaled for rotation within the tank in a vertical plane; a guide providing an opening through which a portion of the disk projects in order to contact a book or the like on the guide; and a wiper in association with the disk for limiting the fluid adhesive applied thereby. The disk is driven by a motor from which it becomes detached when the tank is separated from the remaining components and the adhesive fluid applied by the disk is simply controlled by a wiper of durable composition and eflicacious configuration.
Other objects of the present invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the present invention, reference should be had to the following detailed disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a device, embodying the present invention, in association with a book, shown in phantom lines, to which a strip of liquid adhesive is being applied;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the book, showing details of end papers being folded after the adhesive has been applied as in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary, broken away top plan view of the device of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the device of FIG. 3, the section being taken substantially along the line 4-4.
Generally the illustrated device comprises a base mount 20, upon which is permanently mounted a motor 22 and upon which is detachably mounted a tank 24. Tank 24 contains a liquid adhesive 25, which is applied by a disk 26' through a slot 28 in a guide 30. Disk 26 is driven by motor 22 in a manner to be described below. Guide 35 provides surfaces, details of which are to be described below, against which portions of a book 32 abut when the book is advanced, for example, manually in contact with disk 26. As shown, book 32 includes a body portion 34 and a pair of end paper portions 36 and 38. Each of the end paper portions includes, in the illustrated example, an inner leaf 44}, an outer leaf 42 and a pair of zig- zag sections 44 and 46 integrally joined therebetween. The illustrated device is designed to apply a strip of adhesive to an exposed section 44 so that section 46 may be Bfidhfi l h Patented Apr. 24, 1962 laminated thereto by a suitable pressure applying device.
As shown in "FIGS. 3 and 4, disk 26' is keyed to a shaft 48, which is journaled in the forward and rearward walls of tank 24. The rearward end of shaft 48 is provided with one of the mated components of a coupling 50. The other of the mated components of coupling 50 is keyed to the output shaft 52 of motor 22. Tank 24 is provided with a base plate 56, which normally rests upon base mount 20. Base plate 56 is provided with a pair of slots 58, 58 into which a pair of bolts 60, 60 project. Base plate 56 is designed to be slid upon base mount 20 in such a way that the inner extremities of slots 58, 58 may abut against bolts 66, 60 when the device is in operation and may be removed from bolts 6%, 66 when the device is out of operation. When bolts 66), 6t? abut against the inner ends of slots 58, 58, the two components of coupling '56 are mated by interconnecting teeth 62, 6'3, which may be mutually engaged or disengaged merely by moving base plate 56 rearwardly or forwardly. When bolts 60, 60 are in abutment against the inner ends of slots 58, 58 and teeth 62, 63 are mated, wing nuts 64, 64 may be turned onto bolts 69, 66 in order to lock base plate 56 to base mount 20. On the other hand, wing nuts 64, 64 may be turned from bolts 69, 6!) in order to permit tank 24 to be removed from base mount 26 for cleaning, refilling, etc.
Disk 26 is provided with a peripheral groove 66 which serves to retain a quantity of liquid adhesive on any section of the periphery advancing from immersion within the liquid adhesive through slot 28. In order to control the amount of adhesive so retained, a bifurcated wiper 68 is provided. Wiper 68 includes a pair of legs 70 and 72 and a bight 74. Legs 70 and 72 provide flat inner faces which scrape against the faces of disk 26 as it rotates. Bight 74 provides a face which is spaced adjustably from the periphery of disk 26 in the following way. Projecting from bight 74 through an opening in a side wall of tank 24 is a screw 76. The inner end of screw 76 is turned into an internally threaded bore in bight 74 as shown in 77. This inner end provides a shoulder as at 78 which abuts against the sidewall of tank 24. The outwardly extending shank 81 of screw 76 is of smaller diameter than threaded portion 78 and is journaled in an opening of like smaller diameter through the side wall of tank 24. The outer end of this shank is provided with a knurled head by which the screw may be rotated manually. The outer face of leg 70 abuts against the rearward wall of tnk 24 in such a Way as to prevent rotation of wiper 68 while permitting it to be advanced or retracted by rotation of head 80. The distanee between the bight 74 and the rim of disk 26 is determined by the rotational position of the knurled head. Preferably, wiper 68 is composed of a fluorinated olefin, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene such as that sold by DuPont under the trade name Teflon.
Guide 30 includes a table 82 upon which a book may be advanced, an adjustable rail 84 against which a book so advanced may abut. Depending portions 86 of table 82 abut against the forward and rearward walls of tank 24 in order to properly orient table 82 and rail 84. Table 82 provides a medial horizontal face 88 and a pair of downwardly diverging end faces 90 and 92. The rearward edge of table 82 is provided with a flat rim 94 upon which rail 84 rests and to which it is adjustably aflixed by screws 96, 96. Screws 96, 96 project through slots 98, 98 in rail 84 in order to position an upwardly directed flange 101] with respect to table 82.
In operation, after motor 22 has been energized, disk 26 rotates at a predetermined speed. The amount of liquid adhesive carried through slot 28 by the periphery of disk 26 is determined by the proximity of bight 74, this proximity being determined by the rotational position of head 80. Rail 84 may be adjusted by screws 96, 96 so that a book advanced in contact with surface 88 and flange 100 may receive, at a predetermined location thereupon, a strip of adhesive. The downwardly diverging faces 90 and 92 of table 82 render the book manually controllable while the book is in contact with the periphery of disk 26. At any time, guide 30 may be lifted from tank 24 in order to be cleaned or to permit liquid adhesive be poured into the tank. When motor 22 is deenergized, wing nuts 64, 64 may be loosened in order to permit slots 58, 58 to be disengaged from bolts 60, 60 and teeth 62 to be disengaged from teeth 63. Under these conditions, tank 24 may be removed and cleaned.
Since certain changes may be made in the above device without departing from the scope of the invention herein involved, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed:
1. A device for applying a liquid adhesive, said device comprising a base mount, a tank for said liquid adhesive, a disk rotatably mounted within said tank, a wiper in association with said disk, a guide providing a slot through which a portion of said disk projects, and a motor mounted on said base for driving said disk, said tank including a base plate provided with a pair of slots communicating with a free edge of said base plate, a pair of bolts projecting from said base mount through said slots, the output shaft of said motor including a first clutch component, the shaft of said disk including a second clutch component, said clutch components including teeth, said teeth interlocking when said bolts are in abutment with the inner ends of said slots, said teeth being disconnected when said base plate is removed from said base mount, said wiper including a block of plastic composition, one face of said block abutting against a wall of said tank, said block providing a slot, said disk projecting into said slot, and means for adjustably reciprocating said block toward and away from said disk.
2. A device for applying a liquid adhesive to books in a bookbinding process, said device comprising a base mount, a tank for said liquid adhesive, a disk rotatably mounted within said tank, a wiper in association with said disk, a guide providing a slot through which a portion of said disk projects, and a motor mounted on said base for driving said disk, said tank including a base plate provided with a pair of slots communicating with a free edge of said base plate, a pair of bolts projecting from said base mount through said slots, said wiper including a pair of legs and a bight, inner faces of said legs abutting against faces of said disk, said bight being adjustably spaced from the periphery of said disk, said periphery of said disk being provided with at least a groove, manually operable means for adjusting the distance between said bight and said periphery, the output shaft of said motor including a first clutch component, the shaft of said disk including a second clutch component, said clutch components including teeth, said teeth interlocking when said bolts are in abutment with the inner ends of said slots, said teeth being disconnected when said base plate is removed from said base mount, said guide providing a substantially horizontal surface and a sub stantially vertical surface which is adjustable with respect to said horizontal surface.
3. A device for applying a liquid adhesive to books in a bookbinding process, said device comprising a base mount, a tank for said liquid adhesive, a disk rotatably mounted Within said tank, a wiper in association with said disk, a guide providng a slot through which a porton of said disk projects, and a motor mounted on said base for driving said disk, said tank including a base plate provided with a pair of slots, a pair of bolts projecting from said base mount through said slots, said wiper including a pair of legs and a bight, inner faces of said legs abutting against faces of said disk, said bight being predeterminedly spaced from the periphery of said disk, said periphery of said disk being provided with at least a groove, manually operable means for adjusting the distance between said bight and said periphery, the output shaft of said motor including a first clutch component, the shaft of said disk including a second clutch component, said clutch components including teeth, said teeth interlocking when said bolts are in abutment with the inner ends of said slots, said teeth being disconnected when said tank is removed from said base.
4. The device of claim 3 wherein said wiper is composed of a polytetrafiuoroethylene.
5. A device for applying a liquid adhesive to a book in a bookbinding process, said device comprising a base mount, a tank for said liquid adhesive, a disk rotatably mounted within said tank, a wiper in association with said disk, said Wiper including a polytetrafluoroethylene block presenting a bight and a pair of legs, said legs straddling said disk means for adjustably reciprocating said block between positions contiguous and remote from said disk, a guide covering said tank, said guide being removable from said tank in order to provide access to the interior of said tank, said guide providing a slot through which a portion of said disk projects, a motor mounted on said base mount for driving said disk, said tank including a base plate provided with first locating means, said base mount being provided with second locating means for interaction with said first locating means, the output shaft of said motor including a first clutch component, the shaft of said disk including a second clutch component, the clutch components being interlocked when said first locating means and said second locating means are mated, said first clutch component and said second clutch component being disconnected when said first locating means and said second locating means are disassociated, said guide providig a substantially horizontal surface, a substantially vertical surface which is adjustable with respect to said horizontal surface, and a pair of oppositely tapering surfaces diverging from said horizontal surface.
