Filed May 26, 1958, Ser. No. 737,922 1 Claim. (Cl. 235-114) The present invention relates to golf score registers of the type which can be hand set to indicate the total strokes of a golf game.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a golf score register having interconnected unit and ten dials to indicate the total strokes used in a golf game.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a golf score register of the class described above a novel detent structure for maintaining the units dial in adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a golf score register of the class described above which is simple to use, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be easily carried in one hand.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is an end elevation of the invention;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged front elevational view similar to FIGURE 2 with the cover removed;
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal cross-section taken along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary view similar to FIGURE 3 shown partly broken away and in section for conven: ience of illustration.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, reference numeral indicates generally a golf score register constructed in accordance with the invention.
The golf score register 10 includes a base member 11 having an ear 12 formed on one end thereof. The ear 12 has an aperture 13 extending therethrough to provide a connection for the register 10 to attach it to a tether or watch chain.
The base member 11 has a circular recess 14 formed therein .and a second semi-circular recess 15 is formed in the base 11, intersecting the recess 14.
An upstanding cylindrical post 16 is formed centrally in the recess 11 and extends upwardly therefrom, terminating at a point substantially above the base 11. A cylindrical post 17 is formed centrally in the recess 15 and extends upwardly therefrom to a height equal to the height of the post 16. The post 17 has a transverse slot 18 formed therein with the lower end of the slot terminating at a point above the bottom of the recess 15.
A cover 19 having a shape similar to the shape of the base 11 is positioned in engagement with the base 11 on the side thereof containing the recesses 14, 15. The cover 19 is provided with a circular recess 20 corresponding with and axially aligned with the recess 14 and a second circular recess 21 corresponding with and axially aligned with the recess 15. The recesses 20, 21 communicate with each other in the same manner as the recesses 14, 15 communicate. The cover 19 is provided with a relatively shallow bore 22 centrally of the recess 20 to receive the upper end of the post 16 and a second shallow bore 23 axially of the recess 21 to receive the upper end of the post 17.
The cover 19 is provided with a generally rectangular window opening 24 overlying the juncture of the recesses 14, 15, as best seen in FIGURE 1.
A circular wheel 25 is journalled on the post 16 and is seated within the recesses 14, 20 of the base 11 and cover 19. A second circular wheel 26 is journalled on the post 17 within the recesses'15, 21. The circular wheel 26 is provided with'a circular recess 27 extending inwardly thereof coaxially with the post 17. The circular recess 27 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially equi-spaced detent sockets 28 extending outwardly from the center thereof.
A pin 29 of the type normally used for securing a Watch band to a watch is seated in the slot 18 and has a pair of opposed outwardly spring pressed pin members 30 engaged in an opposed pair of the detent sockets 28, releasably locking the wheel 26in circularly adjusted position with respect to the post 17 The wheels 25, 26 are connected by a Geneva gearing which includes a single tooth 31 formed on the wheel 26 between a pair of recesses 32. The wheel 25 has a plurality of sockets 33 formed in the periphery thereof in which the single tooth 31 engages so as to move the wheel 25 upon movement of the wheel 26. The wheel 25 has .a plurality of concave, arcuate faces 34 interposed between each of the recesses 33 to engage the surface of the wheel 26 to prevent rotation of the wheel 25 at all tims except when the tooth 31 is engaged in one of the recesses 33.
The wheels 25, 26 have an annular series of indicia numbers formed on the upper faces thereof and visible through the window 24 of the cover 19. The wheel 26 projects outwardly from the base 11 and cover 19, as best seen in FIGURE 1, and has the peripheral edge thereof roughened at 35 providing a grip for the wheel 26 by the fingers of the golfer so he may turn the wheel 26 to show the desired number of strokes through the window 24. The detent sockets 28 are positioned so as to releasably secure the wheel 26 in the ten digit position and upon each rotation of the wheel 26 the single tooth 31 causes the wheel 25 to rotate sufiiciently to expose the next higher ten digit on the surface of the wheel 25.
It can readily be seen that the golfer is only required to move the wheel 26 for each stroke taken and with the wheel 25 moving automatically for each rotation of the wheel 26, the total strokes taken is registered by the exposed indicia visible through the window 24.
It should be understood that the base 11 and cover 19 may be formed of any desired material, including plastics, and that the cover 19 may be adhesively secured to the base 11, if desired.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A golf score register comprising a base including spaced cut away end portions, a pair of spaced apart upstanding cylindrical posts integral with said base, one of said posts having a transverse slot extending therethrough an ear extending from said base having an eye formed therein for the reception of a chain, a pair of indicia bearing wheels journallcd on said posts and provided with interengaging Geneva gearing on the peripheral edges thereof, one of said wheels having a roughened peripheral edge projecting outwardly of said cut away portions, a circular recess formed centrally in the wheel journalled on the post, having the transverse slot therein, said circular recess having a plurality of circumferentially equispaced detentsockets formed therein, and a pin having a pair of oppositely disposed resiliently outwardly pressed pin members mounted thereon and'releasably engaged in an opposed pair of said detent sockets to releasably secure said wheels in circularly adjusted position, and a cover having corresponding cut away portions extending over said Wheelaand secured to said base, seeuring said 7 wheels on said posts.
