GOLF SCORE iNDIGATOR Filed Nov. 27, 1946 Plus 01 Minus 5 Strokes Im'e/itor uaro ALLEN CULVER Patented Oct. 18, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GOLF SCORE INDICATOR Lloyd Allen Culver, Fullerton, Calif. Application November 27, 1946, Serial No. 712,499
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in golf score indicators and more particularly to a device of this character for indicating the total strokes required by a player in playing a nine or eighteen hole golf course.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be conveniently carried in the pocket of a person, or which may be worn on the wrist or carried by the belt of a golfer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the top plate and pointer removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a back plate of generally circular construction and formed with extensions 6 at diametrically opposite sides provided with slots 1 to provide strap attaching loops 8 by means of which the backing plate may be secured to the wrist of a person, or attached to a belt for carrying at the waist of a person. The underside of the plate 5 is concaved as shown at 9 to conform to the curvature of the wrist.
The upper surface of the backing plate or base 5 is provided with a zero mark l0 adjacent its edge and extending in clockwise relation therefrom is a plus scale reading from 1 to 10 and extending in counterclockwise relation from the zero marking H3 is a minus scale l2 likewise reading from 1 to 10,
Inner and outer concentric scales l3 and M are also marked on the upper surface of the base 5, the inner scale including the numbers 35 to 55 inclusive while the outer scale includes the numbers 80 to 100 inclusive. The numbers forming the several scales are positioned in radial alignment with respect to each other as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 2 of the drawings.
A disc I5 is provided at its center with a downwardly projecting pin or rivet I6 which extends through an opening l1 in the center of the base 5, the lower end of the pin or rivet being upset as shown at H! to rotatably secure the disc l5 in position on top of the base. The disc I5 is of a diameter to cover the scales I3 and i4 and to leave the scales and I2 adjacent the edge of the base exposed.
The disc I5 is formed at diametrically opposite sides with openings l9 and 20, the opening l9 forming a window positioned above the inner circular scale I 3 and the opening 2|] forming a. window positioned above the outer circular scale I4. The upper surface of the disc |5 is formed with a pointer 2| which projects upwardly above the surface of the disc to provide a finger grip for turning the disc and pointer on the pin IE to swing the pointer clockwise or counterclockwise into and out of registry with the numbers of the respective plus and minus scales H and I2.
The underside of the disc I5 is provided with a recess 22 in which is positioned a spring projected ball 23 adapted to selectively seat in recesses 24 formed concentrically in the upper surface of the base 5 to lock the pointer in its rotatably adjusted position.
The present embodiment of the invention is designed for use by a golfer having an average nine hole score of 45 or an average eighteen hole score of 90, thus requiring an average of five strokes for each hole. Accordingly when the pointer 2| is at the zero marking ID the nine hole score of 45 will appear in the window opening l9 and the eighteen hole score of will appear in the window opening 20.
The pointer 2| is moved at the completion of each hole to indicate whether the golfer has required more or less than his five stroke average for each hole. Thus, if the golfer takes six strokes on the first hole the pointer 2| is moved to the first plus mark on the plus scale I I, and if, on the next hole he requires three strokes, that is two under his average of five for each hole, the pointer 2| is moved counterclockwise two positions until the pointer comes at rest opposite minus 1 of the minus scale l2. The player continues to keep a record of his score hole by hole until the nine or eighteen holes have been played and the final position of the pointer will indicate in the openings l9 or 20 the total number of strokes required by the golfer.
For golfers whose average is greater or less than 45 for nine holes or 90 for eighteen holes, the numbers used on the inner and outer scales l3 and II are changed in accordance with their proficiency.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A golf score indicator comprising a base having plus and minus single stroke indicating scales thereon arranged in one are, and also having thereon a pair of plus and minus total stroke indicatin'g scales thereon arranged in diiferent arcs indicating scales.
