More specifically the present invention relates to shoes having outsoles which are vulcanized to the upper parts of the shoe.
It is an object of the present invention to provide for a shoe construction in which the .outsole is securely fastened to the shoe upper and the insole of the shoe.
It is an additional object of the present invention, to provide for such a shoe construction in which the outsole is vulcanized to the insole and a reinforcing strip connected to the shoe upper.
With these objects in view, the shoe of the present invention includes an upper having at its lower rim portion thereof an inwardly extending lip, an insole abutting with a peripheral portion of the bottom face thereof against the top face of said lip, a reinforcing strip substantially co-extensive with said lip and abutting against the bottom face thereof and connected by sewing to said lip and the peripheral portion of said insole. The shoe includes further an outsole abutting against the reinforcing strip and connected thereto. Preferably the reinforcing strip is made of chrome leather and the outer sole is vulcanized to the reinforcing strip and to the insole inwardly of the peripheral portion thereof.
The method of making the shoe of the present invention includes the steps of drawing a shoe upper over a last. An insole is then placed against the bottom face of the last and the lower rim portion of the upper is bent inwardly in the usual manner to extend over the peripheral portion of the insole. A reinforcing strip is then placed against the inwardly extending lip of the upper, and the peripheral portion of the insole, the rim portion of the upper sandwiched between the peripheral portion of the insole and the reinforcing strip are then sewn together after removing the parts from the last. An outer sole is then placed against the bottom face of the reinforcing strip and the bottom face of the insole inwardly of the peripheral portion thereof and the outer sole is then connected, preferably by vulcanization, to the bottom face of the reinforcing strip and the insole.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, as to its construction, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
The drawing is a perspective, partially sectioned view of a front portion of the shoe according to the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing it will be seen that the shoe of the present invention includes a shoe upper 1 which may be provided on the inner surface thereof with a lining 2. The lower rim portion of the upper curves inwardly to form inwardly extending lips 4 thereon. An insole 3 abuts with a peripheral portion of its bottom face against the top face of the lips 4. A reinforcing strip abuts with its top face against the bottom face of the inwardly extending lips 4 and as can be seen from the drawing this reinforcing strip 5 is co-extensive with the lips 4 and extends slightly outwardly beyond the same. Au outer sole 7, preferably of vulcanizable material abuts against the bottom face .of the reinforcing strip 5 and the insole 3 inwardly of the peripheral portion thereof and the outsole 7 is connected to these bottom faces, preferably by vulcanization. The reinforcing strip 5 and the insole 3 are preferably formed with perforations 8 therethrough so that the material of the outer sole 5 will penetrate through these perforations. The reinforcing strip 5 is preferably made from chrome leather which will provide a better bond with the outsole 7 when the latter is vulcanized to the reinforcing strip.
In making the shoe of the present invention the shoe upper 1 and the sole 3 is fixed in the usual manner to a last, not show in the drawing. Afterwards the upper 1 with the insole 3 connected thereto is removed from the last and a reinforcing strip 5 is sewn to the inwardly bent lip 4 and the peripheral portion of the insole 3. After these parts of the shoe are sewn together they are placed on a metal last of the vulcanization press and an outer sole is placed against the bottom face of the reinforcing strip 5 and the bottom face of the insole 3 inwardly of the peripheral portion thereof and the sole is then vulcanized to these bottom faces. During this vulcanization process the material of the outsole 7 will penetrate into perforations 8 formed in the insole 3 and the reinforcing strip 5. This method can be performed in an extremely speedy manner and provides for a perfect connection of the outsole to the shoe upper even if the latter is formed of smooth leather since the outsole is not directly vulcanized to the shoe upper.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of shoes differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in shoes having reinforcing strip sandwiched between an inwardly bent lip of the upper and the outsole and preferably vulcanized to the outsole, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention, and therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A shoe comprising, in combination, an upper formed from smooth leather and having at the lower rim portion thereof an inwardly extending lip having a top face and a bottom face; an insole having a bottom face abutting with a peripheral portion thereof against said top face of said lip; a reinforcing strip at least coextensive with said lip and abutting against the bottom face thereof, said reinforcing strip being formed from material better bendable to vulcanizable material than the smooth leather of said upper; thread means passing through said peripheral portion of said insole, said lip and said reinforcing strip for connecting said insole, said lip and said reinforcing strip together; and an outer sole of vulcanizable material abutting against said reinforcing strip and said insole inwardly of the peripheral portion thereof and vulcanized to said reinforcing strip and said insole inwardly of the peripheral portion thereof, whereby a perfect connection is provided between said outer sole 3 and said shoe upper of smooth leather, said reinforcing strip and said insole at a portion thereof inwardly of said peripheral portion being formed with perforations therethrough and said outer sole extending into said perfora- :tions.
