Description
Sept. 22, 1925. l l 1,554,489 c. s. BIRD BOOT OR SHOE y Filed July 20, 1923 Patented Sept. 1925.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. BIRD, or WALPOLE, MRSSAOUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To RUBBRRHIDE `coi;- PANY, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION or MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
Application med July 2o, 1.923. semi no. 652,863.
To all 'whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ACHARLESVS. BIRD, a
citizen of the United States, -residing at Walpole, county of Norfolk, Common- 3 wealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful .Improvement inI Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
U This invention relates to boots or shoes,
and especially to work or sport shoes, having extension soles composed 4of rubber, composition, or equivalent material. I
' In shoes of this type, diiliculty has been 5 encountered in securing "the rubber or composition outsole to the leather weltor other` part secured to the upper, bymeans of the usual outseam, with sufficient permanence to prevent separation of these parts along '0 -their edges, this difficulty being increased with the width of the extension. Under conditions of rough usage,'therefore, there is'a tendency for` the edge of the outsole toseparate Afrom the part to which it is 55 secured particularly at the toe of the shoe,
at which place dirt and other foreign matter is likely to. become wedged etween the parts, tending to separate them further and eventually destroying the shoe. y
In accordance with the present invention,
this difficulty is overcome by .the employment of two parallel lines of stitching, especially around the toe of the shoe, the second line of stitching extending through the v L superimposed parts parallel to the regular outseam, and being located in close proximity to the upper, so as to be concealed thereby. In this manner the shoe, while not differing in appearance `from the ordinary l0 extension sole shoe, is so reinforced about the toe as to prevent separation of the edges of the outsole and the part to which it is attached.v The objects ofthe invention, together l5 with' means whereby the same may be carried into eifect, will best be understood from the following description of one form of embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
-Fig. 1 is a plan view of a shoeconstructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view, in section substantially on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, of the forepart of the shoe.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially .on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
While the invention is applicable to 'Goodyear welt, stitch down, and other jshoes wherein the outsole is secured by an outseam to a part projecting laterally from the upper, it is herein shown as embodied in a thereto, by an'outseam 14, a second out- 'sole lift 15, which may be -composed of rubber, composition, or equivalent material. The outseam 14 complrises a line of stitching extending about t e forepart of the shoe and-also extending substantially all the way through the outsole lifts 12 and 15. Withln the outseam. 14, and extending parallel thereto about the toe portions of the shoe only, is a second line of stitching 16 which also extends substantially all the way throughV the superposed parts, and which is located relatively close to the upper,.so as to be concealed by the outwardlyl curved portion` thereof when the shoe is viewed from the top, as shown in Figure 1. The
13 extending therensv two parallel seams 14: and 16 causethe P I'Q- jecting edges of the outsole'lifts to be bound together so closely and securely as to prevent their accidental separation, as well as the introduction therebetween of foreign matter, the two seams reinforcin one another 'so as to give the shoe adde strength around the toe portion where such strength is needed.
What I claim is:
A boot or shoe having an upper, a lart secured to and projectmg laterally om said'upper, the portion of said upper ad]aprojecting art about the /forepert of the 'in a v v weeen@ cent said projecting-part curving outwardly ling and. within the same vand in close p rox above the same, an outsole securedv to seid w' to the upper, said second line of stlteh- 1| g iw. f g concealed by the outwardly curved shoe byA a' vme of stitching extending sub` portion of the u per and also extendingv stantially. al1 the way through both of said substantially `all t e way through said pro# parts, and a second llne of stitching extendjecting part and outsole. lng about the toe portion only of the shoe In testimony whereof I aix m signature. parallel to said first named line of stitch- CHARLES BIRD.
