SHAMPOO HEADREST Filed July 26, 1961 Kil 'IIIIII'IIIII 'IIIIIIIIII IHFIHHHHHHHHHII INVEN TOR.
.. BY 4-8 j WK A ENT AARON L. SCHNELL United states atent Orifice 3,926,537 Patented Mar. 27, 1962 3,026,537 SHAMPOU HEADREST Aaron L. Schnell, 705 Amherst, Perryton, Tex. Filed July 26, 1961, Ser. No. 126,983 Claims. (Cl. 4I59) The present invention relates to headrests and more particularly to a headrest for shampooing hair.
The prior art reveals a number of headrests or shampoo boards which support the head and in some instances the neck portion of the person whose hair is being shampooed. None of these devices of the prior art disclose a shampoo board or headrest adapted to comfortably support a childs head, while lying on his back, in spaced overhanging relation with respect to the edge of a sink, or the like.
It is, therefore, the principal object of the instant invention to provide a device for comfortably supporting the head of a child, or the like, with the body in a reclining position on a cabinet adjacent the edge of a sink to facilitate shampooing the hair.
Another object is to provide a headrest of this class which permits both hands of the operator to be used for shampooing the hair.
Another object is to provide a device of this class which forms a headrest that may be used for supporting a head in a position for shampooing in a sink, or the like, wherein the elevation of the headrest is easily adjustable to fit sinks of various depths.
Another object is to provide a device of this class for holding a head in position for shampooing the hair over the edge of a sink, or the like, wherein the headrest is maintained in position without the use of screws, bolts or other mechanical fastening elements.
A further object is to provide a device of this class for suspending the head of a child, or the like, over a kitchen sink to facilitate shampooing the hair wherein the device is of relatively simple and economic construction and which may therefore be manufactured and sold at a relatively low cost.
The present invention accomplishes these and other objects by providing a body portion substantially U-shaped in plan and arcuate in cross section including lateral extensions integrally joined to the arms thereof wherein the bight portion of the device is supported by a downwardly extending vertically adjustable leg member having a suction cup secured to the lower end of the leg member.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying single sheet of drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the device;
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, taken substantially along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, illustrating the device in position on a kitchen sink and illustrating, by dotted lines, a head supported by the device; and,
FIGURE 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the device taken substantially along the line 33 of FIG. 1.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in those figures of the drawings in which they occur.
In the drawings:
The reference numeral indicates the device, as a whole, comprising a relatively thin body which is U-shaped in plan View and includes a bight portion 12 and transversely widened spaced-apart parallel arms 14 and 16 with the free end portion of each arm turned laterally outward a distance substantially equal to the spacing between a longitudinal center line through the U-shaped body and the outer free edge of each said arm to form a pair of horizontally aligned extension 18 and 20, respectively. The extensions 18 and 20 and adjacent end portions of the arms 14 and 16 are adapted to overlie a portion of a kitchen cabinet, or the like, indicated by the line 22, adjacent one side edge 24 of a sink 26, or the like, while the length of the arms 14 and 16 are of a desired length which will position the bight portion 12 of the device in spaced relation with respect to the sink edge 24. A resilient pad 21 is secured to the lower surface of each extension adjacent its free end for the purposes more fully explained hereinbelow. The respective outer side free edge portions 28 and 30 of the arms 14 and 16 lie in a horizontal plane common to the upper surfaces of the extensions 18 and 2t) and merge into a diagonal or downwardly slopping surface 32, forming the outer upper edge surface of the bight portion 12. The major portion of the bight portion 12 and the ad.- jacent inwardly directed edge portions of the arms are arcuately curved downwardly to form a recess 34 (FIG. 3) for contacting the back portion of a head being shampooed. A flange 36 depends from the outer free edge of the bight portion 12 and extends along the outer free edge of each arm 14 and 16 and merges into the lower surface of the free end portions of the arms forming a stiifener to add rigidity to the device.
An internally threaded boss 38 depends centrally from the bight portion 12 for threadedly receiving one end portion of an elongated leg member 39.
The leg member 39 includes an elongated internally threaded tube 40 which is threadedly received by one end portion within the boss 38. An elongated stem 42 is threadedly inserted into the depending end of the tube 40 while a suction cup 4 4 is secured to the depending free end portion of the stem 42. A thumb screw or wing nut 46, threadedly engaged with the stem, forms a lock nut for maintaining the stem 42 is vertically adjusted relation for the purposes more fully explained hereinbelow.
Operation In operation the device is positioned with the extensions 18 and 20 disposed upon the upper surface of a cabinet 22 while the bight portion of the device projects in overhanging relation above the bottom surface 48 of the sink 26. The stem 42 is adjusted Within the tube 40 so that the suction cup 44 contacts the upper surface of the sink and maintains the opposing side edge portions 28 and 3th of the arms horizontal. The wing nut 46 is'tightened against the depending end of the tube 4%. A child, or the like, in a reclining position on the cabinet 22, is positioned so that the shoulders of the child oven-lie the extensions 18 and 20 and apply pressure to the resilient pads 21 while the back of the childs head is centrally supported by the recess 34 of the bight portion 12. The com bination of a childs weight applied to the extensions 18 and 20 and the suction cup 44 on the sink bottom secures the device 10 in position. T hereafter the hair of the child is shampooed in a conventional manner wherein the hair overhangs the outer edge surface of the bight portion 12 and water or soap drains from the head and neck through the opening forming the inside of the U-shaped portion 1andkinto the sink rather than down the childs neck and Obviously the invention is susceptible to some change or alteration without defeating its practicability, and I therefore do not wish to be confined to the preferred embodiment shown in the drawings and described herein, further than I am limited by the scope of the appended claims.
