To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FENTON A. MEREDITH,
of Hagerstown, State of Maryland, and county of Washington, have invented a new and use? ful Improvement in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in car-coupling apparatus, and the objects of my invention are to raise the link in coupling to prevent its being bent or broken, and to do so with the least possible danger to the person coupling the car. I accomplish these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail of the lever and fork for raising the link.
To operate my invention the lever-handle A is thrown forward in the direction of the arrow, and the lever-arm A downward, forcing the lever-arm 13 down and the lever-arm B up. bearing the fork C, the prongs of which catch the link and raise it to a horizontal position, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1. Vhen the couplin gis completed, the lever B is forced down by the spring D, carrying the fork 0 down and allowing the link free play.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of the riding lever A and handle A, extending beyond to the side of car, with .the lever B B,provided with the fork 0, and the draw-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
2. The combination of the lever B B, fork G, pivotally secured thereto, and guided by slots in the draw-head, and spring D.
