Description

(Model.)
B. PILE.
Car Coupling.
No. 236,355. Patented Jan. 4,1881.
UNITED States l I ROBERT FILE, OT GOODSON, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE G. PILE, OF BRISTOL, TENNESSEE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,355, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed March 12, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT PILE, of Goodson, in the county of \Vashington and State'of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Oar Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional, view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to automatic carcouplings; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the end of a car provided with my improved automatic coupling. In boxes B under the car are fitted two slides, O D, having a longitudinal movement in relation to the car, and connected by a rod, E, upon which they may slide freely, a spring, F, coiled upon the said rod being interposed to keep them automatically apart.
To the front end of the rod E is pivoted the coupling-hook G, the head of which is arrow-shaped, as shown, so as to readily en gage the coupling-hook of the adjoining car. The heads of the coupling-hooks are provided with vertical openings H and horizontal recesses I, so as to be able to operate in conjunction With ordinary pin-and-link couplings, if required. To keep the coupling-hooks in (Model.)
proper position they are acted upon from each side by springs J J, secured under the body of the car.
To operate the coupling-hook in uncoupling I avail myself of a lever, K, pivoted to the end of the car in such a position that its upper end or handle may be readily reached by the brakeman. The lower end of lever K has pivoted to it a link, L, which is pivoted to the center of a slotted sliding plate, M, working on guide-pins M, passed through the slots M into the car-body. This slotted sliding plate has a recessed projection, N, which strides the coupling-hook G, and when the plate M is moved by the lever K carries the hook with it. The springs J automatically return the hook G to its normal position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention and its advantages will be readily understood. The coupling operates automatically, is safe, simple, and inexpensive.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a car-coupling, the combination of the pivoted hook Gr, operated by the springs J J, with the slotted slide M M having the recessed projection N, the link L, and the lever K, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT PILE.
