SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,321, dated Julyl, 1884.

Application filed January 12, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, OSCAR M. ALLEN and DAVID PE'ITIOREW, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Caskets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in burial-caskets, the object of the same being to provide an adjustable head-rest whereby the pillow or head-rest in a casket may be elevated and lowered. This is accomplished by means of a thumb-screw, which may be readily and conveniently operated from the outside of the casket without the necessity of handling or disturbing the body.

In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional View of a casket. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the cover removed; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the head-rest, showing the under side thereof.

A represents a casket of any desired shape and construction, and B the bottom or floor thereof, to which is secured the elongated loop 0 and the staples D and E. The head of the casket is provided with the sill F, having the groove G, forming a bearing for the screwthreaded rod H, which latter is pro vided with the hand-wheel I. This screw is passed through the hole J in the end K of the casket, and also through the staples D and E, with the upper end resting in the groove G- of the sill. The screw H is provided at its lower end with the groove L,

around which fits the staple D, which sup ports the free end of the screw-rod. The screw-rod H is provided with the annular nut M, adapted to travel back and forth on the rod, the said nut being prevented from turning .by having its lower surface rest on the bottom of the casket.

N is a head-rest, the under side of which is provided with the groove 0, the upper portion of which is inclined, as shown in Fig. 3, in order to enable the head-rest to lie well down without coming in contact with the screw end. The lower end of the head-rest is cut away, shown, forming a neck which (No model.)

causes the traveling nut M, upon the upper surface of which the head-rest is supported, to move toward the head of the casket, thus lowering the head-rest, and when it is desired to elevate the same the screw is turned inthe opposite direction.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a burial-casket and a head-rest loosely or movably secured at its front or lower end to the bottom of the casket, of means, substantially as described, located between the rear or upper end of the head and the bottom of the casket and extending outside of the casket, for raising and lowering the upper end of tl'iehead-rest, substantially as set forth.

2. In a burial-casket, the combination of the head-rest, movably secured at its front end to the bottom of the casket, a nut for supporting said head-rest, and a screw-threaded rod journaled to the bottom of the casket for moving the nut toward or away from the lower end of the head-rest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a burial-casket, the combinatiomwith ahead-rest provided on the under side with the longitudinal groove,and removably secured to the bottom of the casket by the loop 0, of a screwthreaded rod journaled in bearings se cure to the bottom of said casket and extending through the head-board of the same, and a nut located on said rod and adapted to be moved back and forth under said head-rest, substantially as and for the purposes described.
