F. W. SMITH.
PADLOG K CASE. No. 301,291. Patented July 1,1884.
a a L 2 z I ITED STATES FRIEND IV. SMITH, OF BRIDGEIORT, CONNECTICUT.
PADLOCK CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,291, dated July 1, 1884:.
Application filed February 4, 1884.
.To aZZ whom it may concern- Be it known that I, FRIEND W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in locks, but more espe' cially to padlocks, and has for its object to provide means whereby the edges of the shells shall interlock in such manner as shall prevent said shells from shifting the one past the other in case of any twisting strain upon the lock, or in event of a blow upon the side or end, and whereby the difficulty in matching the corresponding rivet-holes in the two shells for the reception of the rivets may be obviated; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully and in detail eXpla-ined,and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may more fully understand how to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows an edge elevation of a look constructed with my improvement; Figs. 2 and 3, edge elevations of similar locks provided with my improvement, but showing modifications in the number and shape of the teeth, projections, or serrations shown at Fig. 1.
Similar letters denote like parts in the severalfigures of the drawings.
A and B are the shells of the lock. 0 are teeth or serrations projecting from the edge of the shell A. D are recesses in the edge of the (No model.)
shell B, corresponding to and adapted to ad- 5 cesses, D, with which the other shell is prok vided, the two edges are perfectly matched one to the other, so that by their accurate adjustment the rivets are easily fitted to their respective rivet-holes, and after the rivets are secured the teeth and recesses upon the edges relieve the rivets from any strain which may be brought to bear upon the lock by twisting or by a blow or shock which would have a tendency to shift the edge of the two shells l one past the other.
I am well aware that teeth or serrations have been heretofore used in barrel-locks and the like for the purpose of preventing the barrel from rotating, and also for the purpose of secur ing the same within the lock; and I do not wish to be understood as laying claim to any such construction, the gist of my invention resting in the idea of providing the meeting edges of the shells of a padlock with teeth or serrations and corresponding recesses, whereby the as sembling of the lock may be facilitated and said shells more securely held as against rotary movement and strain.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a padlock, the case composed of two shells provided at their meeting edges with teeth or serrations which interlock and prevent both sliding and rotary movements of one shell up on the other, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRIEND IV. SBIITH.
