Description

(No Model.)
FJRAPP, WATGH CASE HINGE.
Patented July 1, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OrrrcE.
FREDItIOK RAPP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SEBASTIAN ANDERSON, OF SAME PLACE.
WATCH-CASE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,156, dated July 1, 1884.
Application filed April 2, 1834. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIOK RAPP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVatch-Gases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in watch-cases. 1
The object it has in view is to obtain asimple, neat, and strong hinge-joint between the case or bezel and center-piece; and to the accomplishment of the above theinvention consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, as will be described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a watch-case with my improvements attached; Fig. 2, a sectional detail thereof; Fig. 3-, a perspective of an attachment secured to the case or bezel; Fig. 4., a top plan of the case; Fig. 5, a section on line 1 l of Fig. 1, and Figs. '6 and 7 views in de tail of certain parts.
' Like letters refer to like parts in each view.
A represents the center of the case, and B the hinged back or front piece thereof. Soldered to an inner face of piece B, and at a point near the edge thereof, is a metal strip, a, formed or provided with two outwardlyprojecting and curved arms, b, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. In the enlarged outer ends of arms b, as shown, there is mounted a pin, 0, for the purpose hereinafter described, and said arms are also each provided with a projection, q, to, more effectually close all openings through which dust might enter to the movement. Notches d, separated by strips 6, are formed in centerpiece A, as shown in Fig. 4., such notches being a sufficient distance apart to receive the curved arms 1), above referred to, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pin 0, described as connecting said curved arms, being thus brought below the strips 6 of center-piece A. The curved arms I) being fitted into the notches d, and the pin a occupying theposition described, a small metal block or keystone, h, is placed beneath strip 6 and held in position by means of a pin 7 or screw passed through an opening, 9, formed in said strip, and through a vertical opening,
7a, (dotted lines, Fig. 6,) formed through said keystone. Upon its inner edge keystone h is notched, as at i, Fig. 6, and the pin 0, hereinbefore referred to, occupies such a position that it will enter said notch and prevent the separation of the parts, and form a perfect hinged joint between the parts of the case.
By means of the construction and arrange ment of parts as described hereinbefore a simple and perfect joint is formed between the parts, and one which will be invisible.
WVhen the invention is to be applied to open-face watches, in place of keystone h, which is especially designed for hunting-case watches, block I may be used. This block is notched at m, and the center-piece it thus formed is notched at 0 to accommodate pin 0, as is the keystone h, referred to, and said center-piece n is also provided with an opening,- 12, for the insertion therethrough of the pin f, referred to as holding keystone h in position. This construction effectually closes all openings left after notching center-piece A, and through which dust might otherwise gain access to the works.
What I claim is 1. As an improved joint for the bezel and back of a watch-case, a strip secured to the back or bezel, provided with two curved arms connected by apin or screw, as described, and adapted to fit into a notched center, and a block or keystone secured to said center, and provided with a notch to receive the connecting pin or screw, as described.
2. Back or bezel B, provided with strip a, formed with curvedarms I), connected by pin or screw 0, in combination with center A and notched block or keystone 71, secured thereto, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Back or bezel B, strip a, secured thereto, said strip formed with arms I), which are connected with pin or screw 0, and provided with projections q. in combination with center A and notched block or keystone h or Z, the parts arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two-witnesses.
FREDR'IOK RAPP.
