CAR-COUPLBNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,050, dated June 2 1-, 1884:.
Application filed December 15, 1883. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JONATHAN H. DUST- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olarks, in the county of Merrick and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The figure in the accompanying drawing showsa perspective view of an end of a freightcar provided with my improvement.
A and B are two vertical rods. 0 is a handlever, to which the top of the rod A is secured. M This hand-lever is pivoted at O to the top of the standard G D is a plate bolted to the roof of the car, to which the standard 0 is fixed.

The crank projection E is five degrees from the plane of the arm E, as shown, so that when said arm gravitates after an operation the crank projection will not stop on the center that is to say, when the arm E is down in a vertical line, the projection E will extend slightly out from a vertical line, whereby the rod E may be turned and the arm E and link-lifter E may be raised by drawing up on the rod A. E, E, E, E and E are formed integral of a single piece of metal.
G represents the draw-head, and H the link therein. I is the pin securing the link H in the jaws of the draw-head. 1 is a short link pivotally fixed to the top of the pin I. J is a horizontal rod secured to the end of the car by straps J. The rod J is adapted to turn in these straps at the convenience ofthe operator. J 2 is a crank projection on the rod J, to which the lower end of the rod B is secured. J is a crank-handle on the outer end of the rod J. B is a handle on the rod B.
L is a foot-lever pivoted at L to the roof of the car. The top of the rod B is secured to the outer end of said lever.
J is a right-angled projection on the inner end of the rod J. The outer end of this projection is jointed to the top of the short link I.
The object of my invention is to facilitate and make safe the coupling of cars. To this end it consists in means whereby the link and pin may be controlled by the operator from the side of the car, from the top, or from the platform of an approaching car.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming the car shown in the view standing still, and a car approaching, the operator may guide the link into the approaching draw-head by means of the handle A on the outer end of the rod A. By moving the handle in the position shown in the figure the link-guiding projection I is raised up under the link, and said link held in a position such that itwill pass into the jaws of the engaging draw-head. \Vhen it is desired to effect the coupling from the top of the car, this can be done by raising up on the lever C. This action will produce a result similar to that of moving Ithat is to say, by raising up on the lever the linkguiding projection I" is brought under the link, and said link thereby guided into the jaws of the approaching draw-head. lVhen it is desired to uncouple the cars, this may be efi'ected either from the top or the sides. By pressing down with the foot on end of the inner end of the foot-lever L the lower rod, J, is turned by means of the rod B. This action forces up the arm J, which is connected to the short link 1, whereby the pin I is Withdrawn from the draw-head and the cars uncoupled. By turning the side handle, J the rod J is also turned and the rod J raised, and the pin withdrawn from the draw-head. The handles A and B are intended, respectively, to guide the link or withdraw the pin at pleasure.
These handles may be operated in coupling the-car to a flat car, a caboose, or other platform-car-that is to say, one can stand upon a platform or the end of a flat car and control the link and pin by means of the handles A and B and the intervening means. The mechanism herein shown is intended to be applied to each end of a car, so that a crank, I, will be relative on the right side of a car, and the crank J 2 and connective means on the left side, so that the car may be turned without affecting the relative position of the mechanism. The rods A and B are so placed on a car that they do not interfere with the brakes. The link-guide mechanism is separate and inde pendent from the pin raising mechanism. The handle J when down, lies against the end of the car. In this position the pin is in the draw-head. WVhen the handle J 3 is raised, said pin is not wholly withdrawn from the draw-head, but only sufficiently raised to permit the link to be withdrawn. The inner end of the foot-lever L on top of the car serves as a stop to allow the upward movement of the pinthat is to say, by drawing in the handle J the arm J is raised and the pin I partly raised out of its seat. This action forces up the rod B and raises up on the outer end of the foot-lever L. The inner end of said lever is at the same time lowered and forced in contact with the roof of the car. This limits the upward movement of the pin.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The hangers F, rod E, right-angled projection E, crank proj ection E projection E and link-lifter E, in combination with the rod A, provided with a handle, A, and the lever O, pivoted to the standard 0 substantially as described and set forth.
2. The rod J, secured to the end of the car by straps J, said rod being provided with handle J crank projection J and arm J*, the link I, jointed to the top of the pin, and
