SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 308,277, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed Ju To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Pnuen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomingburg, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and
it consists in the improvements hereinafter fully described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 isa perspective View representing the end of a car with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal see tion of the draw-head; Fig. 3, a detail view of the link.
The draw-head A is secured by hangers a centrally on the under side of the car-body B atone end thereof, the said draw-head being provided at its front with the usual flaring mouth, 0, and upper shoulder, 12, between which and the car-face is placed the key 0.
D represents the coupling-pin, which is of ordinary construction, and is adapted to pass vertically through the draw-head by means of perforations d.
A spiral spring, E, is secured at one end to the inner end of the draw-head A, while its other end is extended and secured to the rear end of an elongated block, F, which plays longitudinally in the forward portion of the drawhead, and is adapted to be normally held by said spring E in the position illustrated in Fig. 2. The upper portion of the said block F is cut away to form, in addition to the rear shoulder, e, a front shoulder or seat, f. The front face of the block F is curved downwardly and rearwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and is furthermore provided with a depression or groove, 9.

An arm, i, integrally projects from the center of the shaft, and is connected to the upper end of the pin D by a chain or cable, j. The center of the top of the car is recessed to contain a lever, H, which is centrally pivoted, and is attached at its outer projecting end by a chain or cable, 70, to the arm 2' of the shaft G.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The link D may be elevated by movingeither the shaft G by means of its handle. h or by depressing the lever H by means of the foot of the operator. As the pin D is elevated the spring E moves the block F in the draw-head and causes the front seat, f, of the same to come beneath the lower end of the link and support the same in the position illustrated in Fig. 2. The link I, Fig. 3, has one end point ed or converging, so that said end can enter the mouth of the draw-head and accord with block F, so as to have a positive bearing thereagainst and move the same from beneath the pin D, thereby permitting said pin to drop through the saidlink, and thus effect the coupling operation.
A pin, it, passes transversely through the draw-head, as indicated in Fig. 2, between the shoulders e and f of the block F, and limits the longitudinal play of said block in said draw-head.
By downwardly and rearwardly curving the front face of the block F, as before described, and providing the same with the angular depression or groove the link is not only maintained by said groove centrally in the draw-head, but, if it should enter too high in said recess, the rearward and downward curve of the block F will compel and deflect said link to its proper position.
I claim The combination, in a car-coupling, of a draw-head vertically perforated at its front, a coupling-pin playing in said perforation, a spring-seated block located in said draw-head, having its front face curved downwardly and rearwardly, as described, and provided with a vertical angular depression in its front face, and a horizontal recess in its upperportion,
the shape of the depression g in the face of the a pin located in the draw-head to lie transversely in said recess, a horizontal shaft journaled in the front of the car, provided with 1evers and connected to the said pin by a chain, a foot-lever pivoted at the top of the car and connected to the said shaft, and a link formed angular at one end, substantially as and for the I purpose specified.
