Also, the movement of the comb or the support bar for the detent webs per operating cycle is simplified by this arrangement so that the speed of the machine may be considerably increased.
The novel needle latch detents means of the present invention may be mounted above or below -the support bar for the needle guide comb and the detent webs may interdigita-te with the guide comb so that the detent reaches as closely to lthe innermost point of the latch as possible.
The above and other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be more fully set forth in the following detailed description of certain preferred embodiments thereof, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein FIG. l is an end view partly in section of the appa-- ratus of FIG. 2;

The members 46 are interconnected by longitudinal rails 47 and 48, upper rail 48 having the form of an angle iron. Horizontal push rods 52 are threadedly connected to the cross connecting pieces at 51 while the other end of the push rods is linked at 53 .to lever 54. Lever 54 is journaled in bracket 56 on housing cover 25, `its pivot being shown at 55. Since there are four needle supporting bars 44, there are provided four actuating links 52, 54 which are positioned one behind the other so that only one actuating linkage is seen in FIG. 2. Levers 54 carry dogs 55 which engage the four adjacent wheels 5'6. The wheels 56 are keyed to axle 57 which carries a beveled gear 58 engaging beveled gear 59 mounted on axle 60. Axle 60 is supported on the housing cover 25 by bearing 62 and carries at its outer end toothed wheel 61 for chain 10.
The bearings 40 for shaft 41 are iixed to support tube 63 which is supported by end walls 64 on both sides of the machine, only one of the two like end walls being shown in FIG. 2. 'Ihe end walls are bolted to housing 1 at 65 and include an upper plate 64a which carry the shafts 66 holding warp beams 67. As shown in PIG. 1,
the yarns 68 and 69 run from ,the beams 67 over guide plate 70 through apertures 71 in rails 48 and through the eyes in yarn guides 45 to the loop forming latch needles. The knitted fabric 72 -then runs over rolls 73 and 74 tostorage beam 7S. n
As shown in FIG. 1, the yarn guides 70 are resilient members riveted at 76 to longitudinal strips 77 which, in turn, are carried by transverse yoke 78 mounted on the support tube 63 by means of angle iron 79 and threaded bolts 80 and 81.
As shown in FIG. l, the lower ends of push rods L15, 16,l
17 and 18 are linked to respective 4arms 83 of two-armed levers 82, the joint 84 engaging a respective one of earns 11, 1:2, 13 and 14 while the other arm 85 of the twoarmed levers, which forms `an acute angle with the firstnamed arm thereof, also engages the cam surface so as to prevent disengagement of the push rod ends from the cam surfaces. The two-armed levers are pivotally mounted on shaft 867Which is journaled in housing, 1, as indicated in FIG. 2, where the shaft 86 is shown mounted in wall 88 which has an aperture 87 through which shaft 7 extends.
Enlarged IFIG. 3 clearly shows the novel latch detent webs 36 mounted on bar 34 while the comb webs 37 are mounted on bar 35. The comb Webs are shown to pass through .the interspaces between the, knitting needles 89 (see also FIG. the needles being mounted onjbar119.v In this phase of the knitting' operation, as illustrated in FIG. 3,'the detent Webs 36 have been vmoved with their front ends into the range of needle latches 90 so as to prevent the latches from moving upwardly. As can be clearly seen in FIG. 5,'the detentwebs 36 pass betweenV the comb webs 37 vand are positioned substantially in the same plane as 'the respective needle shafts 89. It is clearv that the deten-t webs 36 to not come into contact with yarnsV 69 so that the path of the yarns from yarn guides 45 tov knitting needles 89 is unimpeded.
As is shown in FIG. 4, the arrangement is not limitedl to that shown in FIG. 3. Thus, in theyembodirnent of FIG. 4, themsupport bar 34 for the latch detent Webs 36' isr positioned below the support bar 35 extend toward the comb Webs 37 and the detent Webs of thecomb from lbelow.` Y I While the inventionhas been described and illustrated in connection with certain now preferred embodiments,y
it will be clearly understood th-at many modifications and variations may occur to the skilled in the art, particularly after benefiting from the present teaching, without defV More particularly, any conven-l ment of the various knitting parts during a knitting cycle, as well understood in the ar-t, and any individual latch detent means equivalent to a web, pin or like member may be used.
What I claim is:
1. In a Raschel knitting machine having a plurality of yarn guides, and V'a plurality of knitting `needles juxtaposed andspaced from each other in a predetermined direction, each knitting needle having a shaft and a latch pivoted to said shaft for movement in a plane transverse of said direction; a comb including a bar member and a plurality of comb webs mountedon said bar member' in interdigitating relationship with said knitting needles; latch detent means comprising a support, a plurality of detent webs mounted on said support, said webs longitudinally extending in respective ones of said planes and being spaced from each other in said predetermined direction, .and 4actuating means for actuating movement of said support and'of said bar member relativeto each other and relative to said needles in timed sequence, said support being moved .toward and away from a position of engagement of said detent webs with respective ones of said latches.-
. 2. In a Raschel knitting machine having a plurality of yarn guides, and a plurality of knitting needles juxtaposed and spaced from each other in apredetermined direction, each knitting needle having a shaft and a latch pivoted to said shaft tor movement in a plane transverse of said direction; a comb including a bar member and a plurality of comb webs mounted on said bar member in interdi'gitating relationship with said knitting needles, latch deten-t means comprising a support mounted above said bar member, a plurality of detent webs mounted onsaid support, said webs longitudinally extending in respec` tive ones of 'said planes and being spaced from each other in said predetermined direction, and actuating means for actuating movement of said support toward and away from a positionof longitudinal abutting engagement of said detent means with respective ones of said latches.
3. In a Raschel knitting machine of claim l, said support being mountedbelow said bar member. v
