Description

(No Model.)
M. R. VANDERVOORT.
ATTACHMENT FOR FIRE ENGINES.
No. 300.665. Patented June 1'7, 1884.
WITfiESSES: INVENTOR.
I 4 Z'WMUMZW UNITED STATES I FFICEO ATENT ATTACHMENT FOR FIRE-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 300,665, dated June 17, 1884 I Application filed November 2., 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MANLY It. VANDER- VOORT, of Clinton, in the county of De WVitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Fire-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which The figure is a side view of a hand fire-engine of ordinary construction, showing my improved attachment in operative position.
My invention has relation to that class of fire-engines in which a centrally-pivoted lever is operated byhand; and the object of my invention is to lessen the jar caused by the abrupt descent of the ends or arms of the operating-lever, and also to assist the operator in raising or elevating the respective arms of the said lever, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,A represents a hand fire-engine of ordinary or suitable construction.
but I do not wish to confine myself to any I particular shape or form of springer springsupport.
The hand fire-engine shown in the accompanying drawing, and to which my improvement is shown attached, forms no part whatever of my invention.
As the ends or arms of the lever descend in turn, they will strike against the springs B, the said springs serving to prevent the un' pleasant jar and shock which would otherwise be caused, and also serving to assist the operators in raising the respective ends or arms of the lever. By the use of the springs B B a more even and constant motion of the lever is obtained.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of my improved attachment for hand fire-engines will readily be understood without requiring further eX- planation. It will be seen that my improved attachment is exceedingly simple in construction, and is not liable to break or get out of order.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a hand fire-engine, the operating-lever D, provided with rubber bumpers E, combined with the springs B, and spring-holders 0, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
