EUGENE WESCH LER A Trap/v9 United States Patent r 3,005,429 ADJUSTABLE PRESSER FOOT FOR f SEWING MACHINES Eugene Weschler, 288 Bel Air Drive, Massapequa, N.Y.
7 Filed Apr. 14, 1960, Ser. No. 22,340
6 Claims. (Cl. 112-235) g This invention concerns an adjustable presser foot assembly for a sewing machine.
According to the invention there is provided a presser foot adapted for use with one or two sewing needles. The foot is pivotally mounted on a block slidably and adjustably positionable laterally upon a support. Slots are provided in the presser foot through which the sewing needles pass. The presser foot includes a guide member for sewing a seam or hem in a piece of fabric. By lateral adjustment of the presser foot is it possible to adjustably position the fabric to fix the points where the needles will enter the fabric with respect to the edge thereof.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a presser foot assembly including asupport upon which the footis laterally adjustable.
Another object isto provide a pivotable presser foot with a plurality of slots adapted to receive a plurality of needles while sewing, the presser foot being laterally adjustable upon a support to selectively position the needles in the slots. V f 7 For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and, accompanying drawings,
and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure: v
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a presser foot assembly.
' FIGS. 2-5 are rear, front, bottom and side views, respectively of the presser foot assembly.
- FIG. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 7 is a sectionalview -taken on line 77 of FIG. 5.
FIG. S-is a perspective viewof the presser foot block.
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of the support member of the assembly.
FIG. 10 is a top plan view on an enlarged scale of the assembly.
FIG. 11 is a front view of a camming element employed in the assembly.
Referring to FIGS. 1-7 and 10, there is shown an assembly including a presser foot 20 having a forwardly extending plate portion 22 in which are two slots 24 and 26. The foot has an upwardly curved toe end 28. The rear end 29 of the foot is pivotally carried by a lever 30 on a pintle 32 seated in a slot 25 in end 29. Lever 30 is pivotally carried on a pintle 34 seated in a rectangular block 36. The block has a transverse dovetailed groove 38 and two vertical grooves 39 and 40.
Lever 30 moves in groove 39. A plate 44 provides a support for the assembly. This plate is a rectangular member having a dovetailed base 46 which is slidable in the groove 38. The upper end of the plate 44 has a cutout 48 to receive a lug 50 of a post 52. The post is a stationary member and is part of the sewing machine in which the assembly is to be used. Two vertical, spaced, parallel needles 21, 23 carried by shaft 54 of the sewing machine and held by screws 21 23 are disposed to pass through slots 24 and 26, respectively, for sewing a fabric F to be passed under the foot 20 (see FIG. 10).
A guide member 55 for edge E of the fabric F is provided for the assembly. This is a narrow bar having a forwardly extending curved toe 59 and toe plate 60 normally extending beyond toe end 28 of the foot 20. The bar has a slotted rear end 62 in which fits another lever 3,005,429 Patented Oct. 24, 1961 ice ' 31 carried on pintle 33 in the bar. Lever 31 is pivotally mounted on a pintle 34 in groove 40.
Levers 30 and 31 extend forwardly and their upper edges 30 and 31 abut a camming element '65 best shown in FIG. 11. This element has a circular hole 67 which receives the shank of screw 66 seated in a hole 69 in block 36, as best shown in FIG. 6. Theelement 65 has outwardly extending shoulders 68, 70 which rest on edges 30 and 31 The element 65 is rockable on the screw 66 so that when lever 30 is raised lever'31 is lowered and vice versa.
Support member 44 has a threaded hole 45 for receiving screw 47 which removably mounts the member upon post 52. A setscrew 49 is removably threaded in hole 53 in the block 36. A centrally disposed groove 72 is formed in the bottom of base 46, as best shown in FIG. 9. This groove in conjunction with a groove extension 53 of hole 53 in the block receives the setscrew 49 when the support member 44 is centrally located on the block. When the support member is moved in its plane transversely of the block beyond one side face or the other of the block, then the setscrew bears on the beveled face 46 of the block to lock the base 46 in selected position in the block. It is thus possible to move the block and supported presser foot so that needles 21 and 23 can be located between the extreme solid and dotted line positions indicated in FIG. 10 in slots 24, 26.
The flat inner side 5701: the guide member 55 serves 'as a wall of slot 26. Levers 30 and 31 extend rearwardly of the block and have terminal fingers 30 and 31 which serve as stop elements to limit pivotal movement of the levers in the block.
'When the assembly is carried on post 52, needles 21,
23 move vertically up and down through slots 24, 26.v
55 is lowered due to the action of cam element 65. The precise positioning of the needles with' re'spect to edge E- of the fabric is varied by shifting the b1ock 36 laterally on support base 46 and fixing the selected position by tightening screw 49. The assembly is readily attached and removed by means of screw 47.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1.
