SEWING-MACHINE PRESSER FOOT Filed Nov. 25, 1950 IN VEN TOR.
/ 5 j I LEQNARD soLDo' AT TOR NEY Patented Aug. 19, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 'Q I 2,607,303 SEWING-MACHINE PRESSER FOOT Leonard Soldo, New York, N. Y.
' Application November 25, 1950, Serial No. 197,587
The present invention relates to a sewing machine, presser foot for guiding a tape or ribbon fed to the sewing machine and sewed thereby as a binding or decoration on a garment.
I have disclosed a tape and ribbon tension guide attachment for a sewing machine for which I have filed application for a patent, Ser. No. 159,475, on May 2, 1950, and in which application I have described a presser foot constructed and arranged to guide the tape or ribbon to the needle. v v v The present invention contemplates an improvement to the presser foot disclosed in that application and which present pressergfoot has particularuse with the attachment therein disclosed. v
The presentinvention contemplates the provision of a presser foot constructed and arranged so that the tape or ribbon fed from the spool is guided in a positive manner to the needle so that it may not be inadvertently moved from side to side under the presser foot but will be held so that it may not be misaligned with the garment to which it is sewn.
The present invention contemplates the provision of such a presser foot that is arranged and constructed sothat the guiding means forming a part of the presser foot may be selectively adjusted to differing widths of the tape or ribbon which is to be sewed to the garment.
The presser foot of the present invention is such that the tape or ribbon is guided to the sewing machine needle and the garment without requiring attention to the position of feeding thereof that is necessary with prior devices.
Thus, a sewing machine using the presser foot of the present invention is relatively faster in operation and more easily operated than sewing machines using presser foots of the prior art.
The presser foot of the present invention further permits ready cutting of the tape or ribbon at the garment so that a uniform binding or decoration may easily be obtained, an operation which was not possible with the tape or ribbon guiding devices heretofore used and which were referred to as tube guides.
These, other and further objects, uses and advantages of the present invention will be clear from the description which follows and the drawing appended thereto in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a presser-foot according to my invention mounted on the bar of a sewing machine and showing a needle, tape or ribbon and garment.
Fig. 2 is a view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
' 5 Claims. I (Ci. 112--152) Fig. 3 is a View on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a cross section on the line 44 of. Fig. 2.
Fig. 5-is a plan view similar to Fig. 2 with the tape or ribbon guide moved to smallest tape limit...
Referring now to the drawing, the presser foot Ill is provided with the open groove or slot l2 in which .is received the presser bar I4,' ';of the type, usually found in a sewing machine, and which presser foot is secured to the bar in a conventional manner, as by the set screw I6.
The vertical front wall l8, on the left of Figs. 1 and 4, continues intothe horizontal presser foot plate 20, between which and. the conventional sewing machine feed plate (not disclosed) the garment 22 and the tape or ribbon 24 are located to be sewn'together by the needle 26. v
The horizontal presser foot plate 20 continues into the upwardly inclined, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 4, guide support 28 provided with a forward and downward side extension 44.
Secured to the underside of side extension 44 of support 28 and underlying the underside thereof, in any suitable manner, such as theri'vets 39,1. provide the guide plate 32. I
The guide plate 32 extends from the straight edge at the front of the guide support 28 to the rear andterminates at the bend or juncture of the support and the presser foot plate 29, which bend or juncture is just in advance of the opening 34 through which the needle 25 passes for which slot the set screw 36 extends into a corresponding internally threaded opening in the guide support 28 wherein it is secured.
The tape or ribbon guide 38 may thus be moved laterally between the extreme position at one end of the slot 42 illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and the other extreme position illustrated in Fig. 5 at the other end of the slot. The tape or ribbon guide 38 is held in the selected position on the support 28 to adjust the width of the channel between the hook wall 40 and the side extension 44 and which channel is formed by the wall 40, side extension 44, plate 32 and support 38. I
Thus, the space 48 (see Fig. 3), that is the width of the entrance to the channel, may be adjusted to accommodate therein tapes or ribbons .of any width. In the presser root of the present invention, it is contemplated to make the channel adjustable to accommodate tapes or ribbons from one-eighth to five-eighths of an inch in width.
In operation, the space 4'6 is adjusted to accommodate the width of the tape or ribbon 24 which is inserted into the presser foot Ill and sewed to the garment 22 in the conventional manner by the needle 26.
It will be recognized that the tape or ribbon 24 is held against sidewise movement by the hook wall 40 and the side extension 44 and so cannot inadvertently be misaligned with the garment during the sewing operation.
It will further be recognized that I have provided a presser foot having a guiding channel, the width of which may be selectively adjusted to difiering widths of tape or ribbon that is sewed by the machine.
It will be further recognized that since the tape is positively guided to the needle by the-action of the hook" wall and side, noattentionto the feeding position of the tape or ribbon is necessary and that sewing machines using presser foots' according to my inventioi-rz'nay' be more easily and speed'ilyope'rated than heretofore possible.-
It will still' further be recognized that by reason of the-construction described, the tape" or ribbon may becutoff at the lace orsewing which is located at the bend formed by the pros s'er plate and th'e sul iport.
While I have shown in detail a specific" em bodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not int'endto be limited thereto'but wish toclaim my invention as broadly as the scope of the prior art and the appended claimspermit; 7
Iclaim:
