Abstract
A slide fastener presser foot directly attached to a sewing machine pressor foot such that needle guiding apertures in the slide fastener presser foot are aligned with needle guiding recesses in the sewing machine presser foot whereby the slide fastener presser foot may stitch a hidden slide fastener to a garment to provide a seamlike appearance. Attachments for use with the slide fastener presser foot include an adapter to fit in the receiving channel and a mounting shank slidably cooperating with the adapter for attachment to a sewing machine.

Field of the Invention The present invention pertains to a presser foot for a slide fastener and particularly to such a presser foot for mounting on the presser foot attachments supplied by sewing machine manufacturers. The presser foot of the present invention is more particularly useful in sewing hidden fasteners on material; that is, fasteners that present a seamlike appearance.
2. Description of the Prior Art Most domestic sewing machines utilize a presser foot to force the material being sewn against an advance mechanism which is synchronized with the reciprocating movement of the needle to uniformly feed the material past the needle. For use in sewing slidable fasteners onto material, a special presser foot is normally provided by sewing machine manufacturers such that the position of the presser foot is not adversely affected by the chain on either side of the fastener and the stitches may be placed close to the chain.
With the advent of hidden slide fasteners, which are designed to present a seamlike appearance, a need has arisen for a presser foot capable of aligning the chain or filament of the fastener such that the stitching is contiguous the chain or filament to provide the seamlike appearance. US. Pat. Nos. 3,342,151 and 3,349,736 illustrate various embodiments of a pressor foot for a hidden slide fastener; however, these and other known prior art attempts to provide a presser foot for hidden slide fasteners suffer from the disadvantage that the operator of the sewing machine must remove the sewing machine presser foot and assemble the slide fastener presser foot on the sewing machine. Once the sides of the fastener have been sewn, the operator must then remove the slide fastener presser foot and reattach the sewing machine presser foot to the sewing machine in order to complete the sewing of the bottom portion of the slide fastener. Furthermore, the prior art presser foot attachments require both a presser foot and a mounting shank and thereby increase production cost.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to construct a slide fastener presser foot for attachment to a sewing machine pressor foot.
Another object of the present invention is to align the needle guides of a sewing machine pressor foot with needle aper-' tures in a slide fastener presser foot mounted on the sewing machine pressor foot to receive a sewing machine needle.
A further object of the present invention is to construct a slide fastener pressor foot for attachment to a sewing machine pressor foot or through an adapter and mounting shank to a sewing machine.
Some of the advantages of the slide fastener presser foot of the present invention over the prior art are that production cost is reduced, the steps required on the part of the operator of a sewing machine to sew a slide fastener onto material are substantially reduced and accordingly the time for such sewing is reduced, and the slide fastener presser foot may be used by simply mounting it on a sewing machine pressor foot.
The present invention is generally characterized in a slide fastener pressor foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot, the slide fastener presser foot having a guide channel for properly positioning a slide fastener for sewing, receiving means including a planar surface for engaging the sewing machine presser foot, a needle guide aligned with the guide channel to permit a sewing machine needle to place stitches adjacent the slide fastener, and projection means extending from the receiving means to grip the sewing machine presser foot in proper alignment with the slide fastener presser foot.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT A slide fastener presser foot 10 according to the present invention is illustrated in assembly with a sewing machine presser foot 12 in FIG. 1 and in perspective in FIG. 2. The sewing machine presser foot 12 is conventionally provided with most sewing machines for stitching a slide fastener to a garment and has linear longitudinal edges 14 and 16 with needle receiving or guiding recesses 18 and 20 therein, respectively. The toe 22 of foot 112 is smoothly curved upwards as is the heel 24, and the portion of the underside therebetween is planar such that a slide fastener and the material to which it is being stitched may pass under and exit from foot 12 without bunching or snagging. A pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar 26 includes a pair of upstanding walls 28 and 39 extending from the upperside of foot 12 adjacent edges 14 and 16, respectively; and the walls have coaxial apertures therein for receiving a pivot pin 32 which passes through the end 34 of presser bar 26. Presser bar 26 is L-shaped at its upper end 36, and the long leg 38 of end 36 is slidable in a clamp member 40 which is U-shaped in cross section. A slotted projection 42 ex tends from clamp member 40 and is adapted to be secured to the sewing machine such that the angular orientation of presser bar 26 aligns recesses 18 and 20 with the needle dependent upon the lateral position of leg 38 in clamp number 40.
The slide fastener presser foot 10 is preferably a one-piece molded plastic attachment which is adapted to be secured to foot I2 with snap locking action. Foot 10, as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, has linear longitudinal side edges 44 and 46 disposed in parallel planes and a rear edge 48 disposed in a plane nonnal to the side edge parallel planes. A front edge 50 for foot 10 is deposed in a plane angularly oriented from the rear edge plane and joins the bottom of foot 10 in a smooth curve.
The bottom of foot 10 includes a central planar portion 52 separated from side edges 44 and 46 by the open ends of a pair of guide channels 54 and 56 which have concave roofs and extend from front edge 50 to rear edge 48. Guide channels 54 and 56 are angularly oriented with respect to the vertical such that they slant away from the center of foot 10 and towards side edges 44 and 46, respectively. A small longitudinal groove 58 is disposed in the center of portion 52.
The top of foot I0 is shaped to define a central planar support surface 60 and a pair of housings 62 and 64, the undersurfaces of which accommodate the guide channels 54 and 56, respectively. Housings 62 and 64 have parallel inner walls 66 and 68, respectively; and inner walls 66 and 68 are laterally spaced to tightly accommodate sewing machine presser foot 12 in cooperation with surface 60 which is normal to inner walls 66 and 68. A pair of arcuate projections 70 and 72 extend from inner walls 66 and 63, respectively, toward the center of foot 10 and are disposed adjacent rear edge 48. Another pair of arcuate projections 74 and 76 are disposed in a central portion of foot 10 and extend from inner walls 66 and 68, respectively, toward the center of foot 10. The height of inner walls 66 and 68 is slightly less than the distance from the bottom of presser foot 12 to pin 32 such that the ends of pin 32 extend over housings 62 and 64 and do not interfere with the tight fit of presser foot 12 in slide fastener presser foot 10.
A pair of laterally aligned, needle receiving or guiding aper tures 78 and 80 extend through foot 10, and inner walls 66 and 68 of housings 62 and 64 are arcuately recessed at 82 and 84 coaxially with apertures 78 and 80, respectively. Apertures 78 and 80 communicate with guide channels 54 and 56, respectively, near their open ends, as seen in FIGS. 1 and 2.
In operation, the slide fastener presser foot 10 is assembled with the sewing machine presser foot 12 by merely placing foot 10 beneath foot 12 and bending it slightly such that projections 70, 72, 74 and 76 snap into place over the top of foot 12. The longitudinal groove 58 facilitates this assembly in that it weakens the symmetrical center of slide fastener presser foot 10 such that foot 10 may be bent about groove 58 during assembly and resiliently springs back to its normal shape to permit projections 72, 74, 76 and 78 to firmly grip foot 12 in proper alignment with foot 10.
A slide fastener to be sewn to a piece of material is positioned such that the cord and chain or filament of one side of the fastener are in either of guide channels 54 and 56 with the tape extending below central portion 52 of foot 10. In FIG. 1 a
cord C and a filament F are illustrated in guide channel 56 such that a tape T may be sewn to a piece of material M by a needle N. The angled orientation of guide channels 54 and 56 permits the side of the fastener to be moved to a position away from its normal position such that upon operation of the sewing machine the needle places stitches immediately adjacent the chain or filament. This is accomplished by the precise alignment of needle-guiding apertures 78 and 80 with guide channels 54 and 56, respectively, such that the needle pierces the tape where the chain or filament has been displaced by the guide channels. Once the fastener has been sewn to the material in this fashion the cord returns to its normal position over the stitching such that after both sides of the fastener have been sewn in this manner closure of the fastener presents a seamlike appearance.
During the operation of the sewing machine the angled orientation of front edge 50 and the smooth curve between the bottom of foot 10 and front edge 50 permit the fastener and the material to which it is being sewn to pass smoothly under slide fastener presser foot 10 without snagging or bunching. As in normal operation of the sewing machine, the lateral position of the presser foot assembly of FIG. 1 may be adjusted by sliding leg 38 of presser bar 26 in clamp 40; and, accordingly, either of needle guide apertures 78 and 80 may be utilized An assembly for adapting slide fastener presser foot 10 for use with sewing machines without the sewing machine presser foot 12 is illustrated in FIG. 4. An adapter 86 fits in the receiving channel of foot 10, which is illustrated in phantom in Fig. 4, and includes linear longitudinal side edges 88 and 90 with a pair of laterally aligned needle receiving recesses 92 and .94 therein. Recesses 92 and .94 are adapted to cooperate with recesses 82 and 84 in foot 10 to form apertures 78 and 80, respectively. The bottom of adapter 86 is planar and joins a front edge 96 in a smooth curve. A pair of arcuate recesses 98 and 100 are laterally aligned in side edges 88 and 90 and have steps 102 therein. Steps 102 extend in a curved manner from the bottom of adapter 86 and have flat treads which are offset from the top surface 104 of adapter 86. A rear portion 106 of adapter 86 includes a pair of projections 108 and 110 which are L-shaped in cross section to form a pair of lateral grooves 112 and 114, respectively, with the top surface 104 of adapter 86. Another pair of arcuate recesses 116 and 117 are laterally aligned and formed with steps 102 therein in the same manner as recesses 98 and 100.
The width of adapter 86 is substantially the same as that of the receiving channel in slide fastener presser foot 10, and
74 and 76 of foot 10 are adapted to engage recesses 98, 100, 116 and 117 with the bottom of the projections abutting steps 102, as shown in FIG. 6, such that adapter 86 is prevented from slipping after assembly with slide fastener presser foot 10 and such that needle-receiving recesses 92 and 94 are aligned with needle-receiving recesses 82 and 84 of foot 10.
A mounting shank 118 has a base 120 with flanges 122 and 124 extending therefrom and adapted to slidably fit in lateral grooves 110 and 112 of adapter 86. Base 120 has a length approximately three times greater than the width of adapter 86 such that the adapter may be laterally positioned thereon. An upstanding member 126, having an i-l-shape in side elevation, extends from the longitudinal center of base 120 and has a U- shaped web 128 defining a slot 130 between a pair of legs 132 and 134 and a crossbar 136 vertically spaced from the top surface of base 120.
Mounting shank 118 may be adjustably secured to a sewing machine by insertion of a bolt through slot 130 as is well known in. the art. Accordingly, slide fastener presser foot 10 may then be utilized by snapping adapter 86 therein and slidably inserting flanges 122 and 124 of mounting shank 118 in grooves 110 and 112 of adapter 86. With the assembly of attachments illustrated in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 the presser foot 10 may be easily adapted to most sewing machines and lateral movement of slide fastener presser foot 10 is simply accomplished by sliding adapter 86 on mounting shank 118.
A modification of mounting shank 118 is illustrated in FIG. 7 and identical reference numbers are utilized to identify parts identical to parts of mounting shank 118. Reference numbers with 100 added are utilized to indicate similar parts.
An upstanding member 226 extends from the longitudinal center of base 120 and has a U-shaped web 228 defining a small slot 230 between a pair of legs 232 and 234 and a cross bar 236 vertically spaced from the top surface of base 120 The primary difference between mounting shank 118 and the mounting shank of FIG. 7 is that legs 232 and 234 are angularly offset at crossbar 236 such that the upstanding member of the mounting shank is not centrally positioned above base 120.
Upon assembly of the mounting shank of FIG. 7 with adapter 86 and slide fastener presser foot 10, the foot 10 will be forwardly spaced from the sewing machine. The assembly of adapter 86 and foot 10 may, of course, be slidably laterally positioned in the same manner as previously described with mounting shank 118.
Thus it may be seen that the slide fastener presser foot of the present invention may be simply assembled with a sewing machine presser foot or by using an adapter and a mounting shank may be mounted on a presser bar of a sewing machine. The slide fastener presser foot may be mounted on sewing machine presser foot attachments for regular sewing as well as those for sewing slide fasteners by merely spacing the projections to accommodate the greater width of a regular presser foot and to align the needle guide in the regular pressor foot with the needle guide apertures in the slide fastener presser foot.
In as much as the present invention is subject to many variations, modifications and changes in detail, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A slide fastener presser foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot which has a needle receiving recess on each side thereof and which includes a pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar, said slide fastener presser foot comprising first and second guide channels in first and second sides, respectively, of said slide fastener presser foot for properly positioning a slide fastener for sewing,
receiving means including a first housing for said first guide channel and a second housing for said second guide channel, said first and second housings respectively having first and second inner walls, and a planar surface cooperating with said first and second inner walls to define a receiving channel for engaging the sewing machine presser foot,
first and second needle guiding apertures respectively extending through said first and second sides, being adjacent said first and second guide channels, respectively, and being adapted to receive a sewing machine needle to provide stitches adjacent the slide fastener,
a plurality of projections spaced to abut the sewing machine presser foot to align the needle recesses thereof with said first and second apertures of said slide fastener presser foot,
said plurality of projections extending from said first and second inner walls into said receiving channel to grip the pivot assembly of the sewing machine presser foot, and
said slide fastener presser foot being made from plastic and having a central longitudinal groove in the bottom thereof such that said slide fastener presser foot may be bent to permit snap locking assembly with the sewing machine presser foot.
2. A slide fastener presser foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot having a pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar, said slide fastener presser foot having a receiving channel defined by a first inner wall of a first housing, a second inner wall of a second housing and a planar surface, said first and second inner walls being disposed in spaced parallel relation and said planar surface being normal to. said first and second inner walls;
first and second guide channels disposed in said first and second housings, respectively, each of said first and second guide channels having an open end and a concave roof with said concave roofs of said first and second guide channels being angularly oriented away from said first and second inner walls, respectively; and
a plurality of projections extending from said first and second walls into said receiving channel, said projections being spaced to accommodate the pivot assembly of the sewing machine presser foot whereby the sewing machine presser foot may be inserted in said receiving channel in proper alignment.
3. The invention as recited in claim 2 wherein a first needle guiding aperture extending through said slide fastener presser foot adjacent said first guide channel and a second needle guiding aperture extends through said slide fastener presser foot adjacent said second guide channel, said first and second needle guiding apertures being spaced from said plurality of projections such that needle guiding recesses on either side of the sewing machine presser foot are aligned with said first and second needle guiding apertures when the sewing machine presser foot and said slide fastener presser foot are assembled.
4. The invention as recited in claim 3 wherein said slide fastener presser foot is made from plastic and has a central longitudinal groove in the bottom thereof such that said slide fastener presser foot may be bent to permit snap locking assembly with the sewing machine presser foot.
5. A slide fastener presser foot assembly comprising a slide fastener presser foot having a receiving channel defined by a first inner wall of a first housing, a second inner wall of a second housing and a planar surface, said first and second inner walls being disposed in spaced parallel relation and said planar surface being normal to said first and second inner walls,
first and second guide channels disposed in said first and second housings, respectively, each of said first and second guide channels having an open end and a concave roof with said concave roofs of said first and second guide channels being angularly oriented away from said first and second inner walls, respectively, and
a plurality of projections extending from said first and second walls into said receiving channel;
an adapter disposed in said receiving channel of said slide fastener presser foot and having a bottom surface abutting said planar surface of said slide fastener presser foot,
a top surface,
a plurality of spaced recesses arranged in said top surface to engage said plurality of spaced projections of said slide fastener presser foot, and
groove means disposed on said top surface; and
a mounting shank having a base slidably disposed in said groove means of said adapter, and
an upstanding member extending from said base and adapted to be secured to a sewing machine.
6. The invention as recited in claim 5 wherein said slide fastener presser foot has a first needle guide aperture extending therethrough adjacent said first guide channel and a second needle guide aperture extending therethrough adjacent said second guide channel, and said adapter has first and second needle receiving recesses aligned with said first and second needle guide apertures, respectively.
7. The invention as recited in claim 6 wherein said first and second inner walls of said slide fastener presser foot have first and second needle guiding recesses therein, respectively, said first and second needle guiding recesses being aligned with said first and second needle receiving recesses of said adapter.
8. The invention as recited in claim 7 wherein said spaced recesses of said adapter have steps therein offset from said top surface for abutting said projections of said slide fastener presser foot.
9. The invention as recited in claim 8 wherein said upstanding member of said mounting shank extends transversely from said base.
10. The invention as recited in claim 8 wherein said upstanding member of said mounting shank extends angularly from said base.
11. The invention as recited in claim 7 wherein said slide fastener presser foot, said adapter and said mounting shank are made of plastic and said slide fastener presser foot has a longitudinal groove along the bottom thereof to permit said slide fastener presser foot to be bent during assembly with said adapter.
12. A slide fastener presser foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot which has a needle receiving recess on each side thereof and which includes a pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar, said slide fastener presser foot com prising an integral one-piece plastic component including first and second guide channels in first and second sides,
respectively, of said plastic component for properly positioning a slide fastener for sewing,
receiving means including a first housing for said first guide channel and a second housing for said second guide chan nel, said first and second housings respectively having first and second inner walls, and a planar surface cooperating with said first and second inner walls to define a receiving channel for engaging the sewing machine presser foot,
first and second needle guiding apertures respectively extending through said first and second sides, being adj'acent saidifirst and second guide channels, respectively, and beingadapted to receive a sewing machine needle to provide stitches adjacent the slide fastener,
a plurality of projections spaced to abut the sewing machine presser foot to align the needle recesses thereof with said first and second apertures of said plastic component,
said plurality of projections extending from said first and second inner walls partially into said receiving channel to grip the pivot assembly of the sewing machine presser foot, and
said plurality of projections including first spaced projections on said first inner wall extending toward said second inner wall and second spaced projections on said second inner wall extending toward said first inner wall.
Claims (12)
1. A slide fastener presser foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot which has a needle receiving recess on each side thereof and which includes a pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar, said slide fastener presser foot comprising first and second guide channels in first and second sides, respectively, of said slide fastener presser foot for properly positioning a slide fastener for sewing, receiving means including a first housing for said first guide channel and a second housing for said second guide channel, said first and second housings respectively having first and second inner walls, and a planar surface cooperating with said first and second inner walls to define a receiving channel for engaging the sewing machine presser foot, first and second needle guiding apertures respectively extending through said first and second sides, being adjacent said first and second guide channels, respectively, and being adapted to receive a sewing machine needle to provide stitches adjacent the slide fastener, a plurality of projections spaced to abut the sewing machine presser foot to align the needle recesses thereof with said first and second apertures of said slide fastener presser foot, said plurality of projections extending from said first and second inner walls into said receiving channel to grip the pivot assembly of the sewing machine presser foot, and said slide fastener presser foot being made from plastic and having a central longitudinal groove in the bottom thereof such that said slide fastener presser foot may be bent to permit snap locking assembly with the sewing machine presser foot.
2. A slide fastener presser foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot having a pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar, said slide fastener presser foot having a receiving channel defined by a first inner wall of a first housing, a second inner wall of a second housing and a planar surface, said first and second inner walls being disposed in spaced parallel relation and said planar surface being normal to said first and second inner walls; first and second guide channels disposed in said first and second housings, respectively, each of said first and second guide channels having an open end and a concave roof with said concave roofs of said first and second guide channels being angularly oriented away from said first and second inner walls, respectively; and a plurality of projections extending from said first and second walls into said receiving channel, said projections being spaced to accommodate the pivot assembly of the sewing machine presser foot whereby the sewiNg machine presser foot may be inserted in said receiving channel in proper alignment.
3. The invention as recited in claim 2 wherein a first needle guiding aperture extending through said slide fastener presser foot adjacent said first guide channel and a second needle guiding aperture extends through said slide fastener presser foot adjacent said second guide channel, said first and second needle guiding apertures being spaced from said plurality of projections such that needle guiding recesses on either side of the sewing machine presser foot are aligned with said first and second needle guiding apertures when the sewing machine presser foot and said slide fastener presser foot are assembled.
4. The invention as recited in claim 3 wherein said slide fastener presser foot is made from plastic and has a central longitudinal groove in the bottom thereof such that said slide fastener presser foot may be bent to permit snap locking assembly with the sewing machine presser foot.
5. A slide fastener presser foot assembly comprising a slide fastener presser foot having a receiving channel defined by a first inner wall of a first housing, a second inner wall of a second housing and a planar surface, said first and second inner walls being disposed in spaced parallel relation and said planar surface being normal to said first and second inner walls, first and second guide channels disposed in said first and second housings, respectively, each of said first and second guide channels having an open end and a concave roof with said concave roofs of said first and second guide channels being angularly oriented away from said first and second inner walls, respectively, and a plurality of projections extending from said first and second walls into said receiving channel; an adapter disposed in said receiving channel of said slide fastener presser foot and having a bottom surface abutting said planar surface of said slide fastener presser foot, a top surface, a plurality of spaced recesses arranged in said top surface to engage said plurality of spaced projections of said slide fastener presser foot, and groove means disposed on said top surface; and a mounting shank having a base slidably disposed in said groove means of said adapter, and an upstanding member extending from said base and adapted to be secured to a sewing machine.
6. The invention as recited in claim 5 wherein said slide fastener presser foot has a first needle guide aperture extending therethrough adjacent said first guide channel and a second needle guide aperture extending therethrough adjacent said second guide channel, and said adapter has first and second needle receiving recesses aligned with said first and second needle guide apertures, respectively.
7. The invention as recited in claim 6 wherein said first and second inner walls of said slide fastener presser foot have first and second needle guiding recesses therein, respectively, said first and second needle guiding recesses being aligned with said first and second needle receiving recesses of said adapter.
8. The invention as recited in claim 7 wherein said spaced recesses of said adapter have steps therein offset from said top surface for abutting said projections of said slide fastener presser foot.
9. The invention as recited in claim 8 wherein said upstanding member of said mounting shank extends transversely from said base.
10. The invention as recited in claim 8 wherein said upstanding member of said mounting shank extends angularly from said base.
11. The invention as recited in claim 7 wherein said slide fastener presser foot, said adapter and said mounting shank are made of plastic and said slide fastener presser foot has a longitudinal groove along the bottom thereof to permit said slide fastener presser foot to be bent during assembly with said adapter.
12. A slide fastener presser foot for use with a sewing machine presser foot which has a needle receivIng recess on each side thereof and which includes a pivot assembly for receiving a presser bar, said slide fastener presser foot comprising an integral one-piece plastic component including first and second guide channels in first and second sides, respectively, of said plastic component for properly positioning a slide fastener for sewing, receiving means including a first housing for said first guide channel and a second housing for said second guide channel, said first and second housings respectively having first and second inner walls, and a planar surface cooperating with said first and second inner walls to define a receiving channel for engaging the sewing machine presser foot, first and second needle guiding apertures respectively extending through said first and second sides, being adjacent said first and second guide channels, respectively, and being adapted to receive a sewing machine needle to provide stitches adjacent the slide fastener, a plurality of projections spaced to abut the sewing machine presser foot to align the needle recesses thereof with said first and second apertures of said plastic component, said plurality of projections extending from said first and second inner walls partially into said receiving channel to grip the pivot assembly of the sewing machine presser foot, and said plurality of projections including first spaced projections on said first inner wall extending toward said second inner wall and second spaced projections on said second inner wall extending toward said first inner wall.
