BOOT AND SHOE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,034, dated September .'18, 1860.

` To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES M. ALLEN, of Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and vState of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a boot or shoe, constructed after my plan; and Fig. 2, represents a longitudinal section through the boot or slice, showing the gum and the leather in juxtaposition.

` I am aware that, shoe-.tips have been made and applied to boots and shoes, and that among the proposed modes of applying them, a portion thereof was extended back toward the shank, but between the insole and outsole, or so that the outsole was of leather. I am also aware that an india rubber sole and heel in one piece has heretofore been made and applied to leather boots and shoes. I lay no claim in this application, to these separate things, as heretofore applied in their separate capacities.

My invention consists in a boot or shoe as a new article of manufacture, when said boot or shoe is furnished with an india-rubber or gutta-percha. tip, and an indiarubber and gutta-percha outsole, as will be hereafter explained.

By india-rubber, or gutta-percha I mean to include any india-rubber or guttapercha fabric that has the elastic or impermeable qualities, or properties, of these gums, whether it be the gum itself with its curing or Vulcanizing ingredients incorporated with it, or whether such gums be laid on, or combined with cloth, or any other substance or material as a basis, or compound.

A, represents the upper of an ordinary boot or shoe, and a the leather insole. These two parts of the shoe being put together in any of the well known ways-the tip and outsole are then applied, and nailed, sewed, pegged, or cemented, thereto.

The tip Z), outsole c, and heel d, is made in one single piece, and having been slipped over the bottom of the shoe A, may be nailed, pegged, sewed, or cemented thereto.

I believe I am the first to make a shoe or boot, with a tip and outsole of india rubber or gutta percha, or of a fabric in which these gums are an essential part, upon it. If I am the first to so make a boot or shoe, I am entitled to a patent for it. Such a boot or shoe has been adjudged to be a new article of manufacture by those in the trade, and meets with their most sanguine approval as to its utility, durability, and cheapness.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as a new article of manufacture not hitherto known to the trade, or in commerce, is-

A boot or shoe, having an india-rubber or gutta-percha tip, and an india-rubber or guttapercha outsole made in one piece, and united thereto as described, expressly disclaiming the two things when separately used, or not upon the same shoe, or when made in separate pieces.
