UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEWMAN sinvnn'rnonu, or PRESCOTT, Wisconsin, ASSIGNOR T JAMES M. ALLEN, or" I FREDERIGKSTOWN, OHIO. A
BOOT AND snon TIP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 26,329, dated November September 2, 1862, No. 1,339.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoRN, of Prescott, in the county of Pierce and State of Wisconsin, have invented or discovered a new article of manufacture Viz., a Shoe-Tip Made of Manufactured Rubber or .Gutta-Percha; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, mak ing a part of this specification, in which-- Figures 1, and 2, represent shoes with the tips in question upon them. Figs. 3, and 4:, represent the tips separate from the shoes. My invention consists in a new article of manufacture designed for boots or shoes, viz :a tip to be placed on or over the toe of the boot or shoe, which tip is made of prepared or manufactured rubber or gutta.
percha, such a tip making a neat finish, and being more durable than the leather or other article of which shoes are ordinarily made.
It protects that part of the shoe most liable to be worn out, and altogether makes a better and more merchantable shoe than any I heretofore known with tips upon them.
I am aware that leather tips have been known and used for a long time; and that metallic tips have been made and patented.
I lay no claim to either of these things. I
make a tip that is more ornamental than the leather, which it resembles very much, and much more durable than leather. leather and the metal are difiicult to crimp, fashion, or form so as to make a neat covering for the toe of the shoe. But the preformed with great ease and perfection, and
with a finish equal to the best patent leather.
So alsomay the gutta percha be molded into form-the nature of the materials of which any tips are composed being such that it can be readily put into any form or shape, and retain its enduring properties, while they admit of a high degree of polish that adds greater market value to the shoes than the leather or metal tips do. Patent leather as it is termed is exceedingly diflicult to crimp or tree into shape, for a boot or shoe tip, but a prepared rubber or gutta percha tip can be molded or formed into the required shape with the greatest facility,
and finished to bear the greatest resemblance to patent leather, while it is much cheaper,
NEWMAN SILVER- Both the more endurable, and muchmorereadily se-I cured to the boot or shoe?- Ihus in every.
29,1859; .Reissued essential making a better articl t erj the leather or metal tips heretofore used.
To enable others skilled in the art to makejl f f and use my invention, I will proceed to defi Sc ibe the same with refereneeto thedrawj y ings. A, represents the tips in question.: They are made of any of theknown preparations I I f of rubber or gutta percha, highly finished or...
plain, the top portion covering; so a chor the tips or toes ofthe shoes orbootsfasjare most sub ect to wear. The under .part of the tip my be sh wafi good I fastening ofit to the shoe, kand may extend; to the shankof the boot or shoe, so. asto form a water proof bottom in additionto the f tip. The boots and shoesfmay be made in j any of the usual ways, and of; 1e8,thG1,ClOth:j or any of the knownjmateriahused forjsuchw purpose. I place one of the tips over the, 1 f f f toe of the boot or shoe, eithercementing it to the top of the boot or shoe, or not, as mayQg be preferred. I then put on the outer sole and peg, nail, or sew through, thus confinin 1t to its place.
F or sewed w lt d Work ,1; last my pp r 1eather,\or cloth as above# put on the tip, andclose it in with the welt! In applying it to turns (shoes orbootjs that are turned inside out after theyfiare sewn), after the sol i fittedto h asty I a reverse the tip, place iton the last, draw 1 on I, the upper in the usual way, sewall together, 1.
as usual in turn work "7, I andthus confine all together. And these tips may be used in the manufacture of boots and shoes made in part or entirely by cementing, in whichease I i 1 y the tips may be cementedto the. sole, or sole. l
and upper both. H H
Having thus fully described the nature and a new article of manufacture, isl.
A boot or shoe tip, made of any of f known preparationsof india rubber or gutta percha, and to be applied to the boot or shoe in the manner described.
