WILLIAM O. BRONSON, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW' YORK.
STEAM-H EATER.,
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,207, datecl June 10, 1884.
Application filed January 18, 1884. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. 'BRoNsoN of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
Reference is to be had to the accoinpanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate Corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my new and improved steam-heater, taken on the line a: a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 'y 11/ of Fig 1, and Fig. 8 is a sectional plan view on the line z z of Fig. 1.
The invention will first be described in con- I nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the masonry ofthe heater, which masonry is by preference built cylindrical in form and covered with the Sheet-metal plate B, which has the fiueopening O formed in it.
Within the masonry A is placed the watercontaining parts of the heater, consisting of the upper Chamber, D, intermediate annular chamber, E, water-bosh F, series of tubes G, which connect the water-bosh F with the intermediate chamber, E, and series of tubes H, which connect the intermediate Chamber, E, with the upper chamber, D. The bosh F is annular in form, and, together with the grate I, constitutes the fire box or pit of the heater, to which pit or box the fuel is supplied through the inclined or bent feed tube or chute J, fitted in the masonry A and reaching down through the annular water-chamber E, so as to stand above and centrally to the fire-grate I, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer end of the feed-chute J is adapted to be tightly closed by the door K, so that no gas can escape, and the passage E' through the annular water -boX E is made larger in diameter than the chute J, so that the draft is through said opening around the Chute, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.
L is an opening made in the masonry A, just above the fire-box and closed by the door M, so that by opening this door M the fire-box may be Viewed and attended to.
N represents the door to the ash-pit O. Water is supplied to the chambers D E and bosh F, and the pipes G H through the pipe P, and the. steam passes from the heater or generator through the pipe Q to the radiators situated in different parts of the building, and the bosh F is provided with the cock R for drawing off the water contained in the chambers and pipes of 'the heater, when necessary.
Constructed in this manner, it will be seen that the heater is cheap, easy to handle, and that a rapid generation of steam will be effected, since the water is contained in small tubes and chambers directly among and against which the heat and products of combustion circulate.
The water-chamber E is by preference made triangular in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 1, to avoid the accnmulation of sediment therein; but the inner wall thereof might be made vertical, if desired.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The steam-heater shown and described, consisting of the masonry A, centrally-apertured cover B O, water-chamber D below the cover, having all of its outer surface eXposed tothe heat, as shown, intermediate water-chamber E, provided with a central downward and outward fiaring opening, and the water-bosh F, surrounding grate I, in Combination with the bent fuel-tube J, fitted in the side of the nia-- sonry and reaching through the flaring aperture of chamber E, the water chambers and bosh being connected by the Vertical pipes G H, whereby the heat from the grate in passing upward to the central aperture in the cover, through the central aperture in Chamber E, will pass between the Vertical pipes and under and around all sides of the chamber D, substautially as set forth.
