The mechanism is particularly designed for use with a gauge loom such as disclosed in Patent No. 2,896,671, issued July 28, 1959, wherein a series of yarn carrying arms are mounted on an oscillating shaft which is shiftable longitudinally to move the arms back and forth across the gauge wires. It is an object of the present invention to provide a pattern controlled mechanism for varying the shifting movement of the oscillating shaft to cause the yarn carrying arms to be carried successively over a series of wires in one direction and then back over the same wires or cause the arms to be carried over two or more wires in one direction and then back over the same wires depending on the design of the weave.
A further object of the invention resides in providing means for shifting the shaft supporting the yarn carryingarms of a gauge loom which is actuated by a pair of pattern chains to control the shifting of the shaft to produce weaves of various designs.
A still further object of the invention resides in pro viding a pattern chain mechanism for controlling the shifting of the yarn carrying armsback and forth across the gauge wires which is operable in synchronism with a mechanism for oscillating the arms to carry the yarns down into the fabric being woven.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes the frame of a gauge loom having a series of spaced longitudinal gauge wires 6 and a series of yarn carrying arms or fingers 7 for carrying the pile yarns 8 down between the gauge wires into the fabric being woven. The arms 7 are mounted in a bar 8' connected by brackets 9 to shaft 10 mounted to oscillate in bearings 11 carried by a plate 12 slidably mounted in a track 13 mounted on a cross bar 14. A connecting rod 15 extending longitudinally from one end of the plate 12 extends through a bearing 16 at one end of a bell crank lever 17 pivotally mounted on platform 36, as at 18. Coil springs 19 mounted on rod 15 on opposite sides of bearing 16 are held under tension by nuts 20 and yieldably connect the lever and connecting rod together. A roller 21 rotatably mounted on the opposite end of lever 17 is disposed between a pair of drums 22 and 23 which support one end of endless pattern chains 24 and 25. The drums are fixedly mounted on parallel shafts 26 and 27 journaled in bearings 28 and 29 mounted on platform 30 attached to the loom frame 5. A pair of meshing spur gears 31 and 32 are fixedly mounted on shafts 26 and 27 being spaced from the drums by bosses 33 and 34 formed on the drums. A ratchet wheel 35 is fixedly mounted on shaft 26 on the opposite side of the drum to that of the gear 31 and along the side of the ratchet wheel is a ratchet lever 36 having one end rotatably mounted, as at 37, on shaft 26. A pawl 38 pivotally mounted, as at 39, on the side of lever 36 is yieldably held in engagement with the teeth of ratchet wheel 35 by a spring 40. To prevent any back lash of the ratchet wheel, a second pawl 41 mounted on bracket 42 is held by spring 43 in locking engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The free end of ratchet lever 36 is pivotally connected, as at 44, to the end of piston rod 45 having a piston at its opposite end slidably mounted in air cylinder 46, one end of which is pivotally mounted, as at 47, on a bracket 48. Air conduits 49 and 50 extending from the ends of air cylinder 46 are connected with an air supply line 51 by a four way valve 52 which controls the passage of air to and from the air cylinder. The valve 52 is actuated by a cam wheel 53 mounted on drive shaft 55 which has a series of adjustable lugs 54 around its periphery. A second cam wheel 56 is mounted on shaft 55 having lugs 56' for engagement with cam roller 57 carried by rock lever 58 pivotally mounted at one end, as at 59. The free end of rock lever 58 is connected by connecting rod 60 to crank arm 61 mounted on the end of shaft 10 and to allow for limited longitudinal series of arcuate links 63 having a bifurcation 64 at one end and tongue 65 at the opposite end, with the tongue of each link having interfitting engagement with the bifurcation of the next adjacent link and pivotally connected thereto by a pivot pin 66. The pivot pins 66 project beyond the sides of the chain and engage in notches 67 formed in the flanges 68 of the drum supporting the pattern chain. The radius of the outer curvature of the links varies, and the links of one chain are positioned so the high points of the links coincide with the low points of the links of the other chain thus causing a reciprocating motion to be imparted to roller 21, the length of the stroke depending on the curvature of the links that contact the roller as the pattern chains are moved by rotation of the drums. The lower ends of the pattern chains are trained around sheaves 69 adjustably mounted in slots 70 in brackets 71, and the pattern chains may be constructed of various lengths depending on the pattern.
In operation, the cam wheel 56 upon rotation rocks lever 58 which through connecting rod 69 actuates crank arm 61 to oscillate shaft 10 thereby swinging the yarn carrying arms 7 downwardly and upwardly between the gauge wires 6. As the arms 7 swing down into the fabric being woven the pile yarns 8 are woven into the fabric. Upon upward movement of arms 7 the cam wheel 53 has been rotated to bring one of the lugs 54 into actuating engagement with the valve 52 to open the valve to admit air into one end of air cylinder 46 whereby piston rod 45 is reciprocated to move ratchet lever 36 to turn ratchet wheel 35 to rotate drum 22 which through spur gears 31 and 32 rotates drum 23 in a direction opposite to that of drum 22. The rotation of drums 22 and 23 cause the links 63 of pattern chains 24 and 25 to be brought into contact with roller 21 to swing bell crank lever 17 and reciprocate plate 12, thereby causing the yarn carrying arms 7 to be shifted to one side or the th yarnsusuccessivelyover aise'r'ies--of:gauge':wires monodirectioniand then carrythe :yarns-ina reverse directionoverzthe sanrdgaugerwirese.
