No. 700,037
Claims priority, application Germany Nov. 30, 1956 v1 Claim. (Cl. 1Z0-42.03)
The present invention relates to a writing instrument of the -ball point or tubule type having an ink cartridge placed within a holder.
In order to effect a more comfortable and ecient writing position and weight distribution of the pen it has been proposed to place the writing ball above the center line of the Writing instrument. Another conventional way of eccentrically positioning the writing ball or the writing point of the ink dispensing end of a cartridge is to place the entire cartridge eccentrically in the pen casing.
It has been recognized that an eccentric position of the Writing end in the writing instrument affords a much more relaxed holding of the pen because the latter automatically assumes the correct writing position due to improved weight distribution.
In the writing instrument according to the invention the cartridge or writing element is placed in a tubular holding member at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the holding member so that the Writing end is eccentric of the holder or casing for the cartridge and the longitudinal axis of the cartridge intersects the longitudinal axis of the cartridge holder. This intersection is preferably at the rear end of the writing instrument. Y
The writing instrument according to the invention permits the use of conventional cartridges which can be interchanged as in conventional ball or tubule pen Writing instruments.
'Ihe novel features which are considered characteristic of the invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, and additional objects and advantages thereof will best be understood from the following description of embodiments thereof when read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic longitudinal sectional view of a Writing instrument according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a side view of a modified writing end of a writing instrument according to the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, numeral 1 designates the rear part of an oblong holder, the forward part being designated by numeral 2. The parts 1 and 2 are connected by means of a screw connection 3. An oblong cartridge 4 is longitudinally movable within the holder 1, 2. An ink dispensing device 5 is connected with one end of the cartridge 4. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the ink dispensing device or writing end of Patented Sept. 19, 1961 the cartridge 4 is of the ball point type. The rear end 6 including a knob 8 of the cartridge is located coaxially of the holder part 1. The Writing end 5 is placed eccentrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the holder 1, 2. The longitudinal axis of the bore or cavity in the forward part 2 of the penholder is slanted with respect to the longitudinal `axis of the outer surface of the holder 1, 2 which surface is substantially cylindrical. This affords free movement of the cartridge within the holder and facilitates arrangement of an eccentric bore for reciprocably receiving the writing end 5. The dash-dotted lines in the drawing illustrate the center line of the cylindrical outside surface of the penholder 1, 2 and of the center line of the ink cartridge. The later has an annular collar 11 against which presses one end of a retracting coil spring 10 whose other end abuts against the bottom of the cavity in holder part 2. The outside surface of the forward portion of the part 2 may be provided with circumferential grooves 12 for providing the desired friction for holding the pen.
FIG. 2 illustrates a design of the fore end of the penholder which is fiattened or bevelled toward the ink dispensing device 5. This assists in holding the Writing instrument by the writer in the position in which the pen is at a rather acute angle to the writing paper. For ensuring this comfortable position the upper surface of the writing end of the penholder may also be attened or even be provided with a slight recess or depression 13.
What is claimed is:
In a ball point pen, a tubular holding member having a rear end portion, a pinlike actuating knob placed in said rear end portion coaxially of said member, said holding member having a tapered fore end portion having a free end eccentric of said holding member, a bore in said fore end portion, the longitudinal axis of said bore being slanted with respect to and intersecting the longitudinal center line of said holding member at said rear end portion, and a single oblong Writing element substantially coextensive with and placed in said holding member and having a writing end extending through said bore and being eccentric of said holding member, said writing element having a rear end located concentric with the rear end of said holding member and axially abutting said knob.
