Patented May 26, 1931 PATENT; OFFKJE DAVID 3'. LA FRANCE, 01? CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS FOUNTAIN PEN Application filed. May 15, 1930. Serial No. 452,643.
This invention relates to an improved fountain pen, the object of the invention being to provide a fountain pen which may be firmly and comfortably held by the fingers of the writer.
The invention resides in providing upon the barrel and preferably upon the barrel and pen section a smooth flattened portion or portions which interrupt the screw thread on the barrel, by which the cap is fastened p the comfort of Writing, but enable the writer to firmly grasp the pen while writing.
To these ends the invention consists in a fountain pen having a barrel provided upon its periphery with a screw thread adjacent its front end and a flattened portion on said barrel interrupting said screw thread, and a cap having screw-threaded engagement with said screw-threaded portion of the barrel.
The invention consists of a fountain pen as hereinbefore set forth with a pen section on the forward end of the barrel having a flattened portion on its periphery in alignment with the flattened portion on the periphery of said barrel.
The invention further consists in a fountain pen embodying the elements set forth in the following specification and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved fountain pen with the cap removed, illustrating in dotted lines the index and middle fingers and thumb of a writer as the pen is held by the writer.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the fountain pen of my invention.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 33, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 3 showing the flattened portions on the pen barrel slightly concave.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is the barrel of the fountain pen, 6 the pen section and 7 the cap. The barrel 5 is provided with an interrupted screw thread or threads 8 and has flattened portions 9 upon its periphery adjacent the forward end thereof, the flattened portions 9 interrupting the screw threads 8. As'illustrated there are three of these flattened portions 9 and they align with three similar flattened portions 10 on the peripher of the rear end of the pen section 6. The attened portions 9 on the barrel and 10 on the pen section may lie entirely in a plane surface, or as illustrated in Fig. 4: the flattened portions 9 may be slightly concaved to more accurately conform to the shape of the thumb or fingers of the hand of the writer. The cap 7 has screw-threaded engagement with the screw threads 8 on the periphery of the barrel 5. The pen section 6 is of a usual and well-known construction with the exception of the flattened portions 10 on its periphery.
In using the pen it is held as illustrated in Fig. 1, preferably by the index finger 11, middle finger 12 and thumb 13, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the fingers and thumb bearing against the flattened portions 9 or 9 and thus enabling the pen to be firmly and comfortably held by the writer. I
While the portions 9 on the barrel and 10 on the pen section are preferably flattened portions, said portions may be slightly concave, as stated, or slightly convex, that is, said portions may be approximately flattened portions without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A fountain pen having, in combination, a barrel provided on its periphery with flattened portions adjacent its forward end and screw-threaded portions intermediate said flattened portions.
2. A fountain pen having, in combination, a barrel, a pen section on the front end of said barrel, said barrel and pen section each being provided on its periphery with flattened portions in alignment with each other, screwthreaded portions intermediate the flattened portions on said barrel.
5 3. A fountain pen having, in combination,
a barrel provided on its periphery with approximately fiattened portions adjacent its forward end, and screw-threaded portions intermediate said approximately flattened portions.
4. A fountain. pen having, in combination, a barrel, a pen section on the front end of said barrel, said barrel and pen section each being provided on its periphery with approximately flattened portions in alignment with each other, and screw-threaded portions intermediate the said approximately fiattened portions on said barrel.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID J. LA FRANCE.
