Description

-11 1931. J. w. NEAL 1,818,424
INTERCHANGEABLE NIB SECTION AND HOLDER THEREFOR Filed March 3, 1931 Inventor k wi /1 m Neal A tlorney Patented Aug. 11, 1931 UNITED STATES JOSEPH W. NEAL, OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA INTERGI-IANGEABLE NIB SECTION AND HOLDER THEREFOR App1ication filed March 3,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in writing pens and the primary object of this invention is to provide an improved pen or nib section and a I holder therefor for use with fountain pens or similar writing instruments. More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide in a writing pen, a nib section and a holder therefor, said section and holder having cooperating means to facilitate assembling the section with the holder, the invention comprehending the provision of a plurality of nib sections of any particular type, as for example the Spencerian, the stub and a holder capable of accommodating either type of sections whereby one maybe readily supplied with the particular type of nib section as suits his or her particular style of hand writing. so Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the nib section and holder assembled.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the holder.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the holder. Figure 4 is a top plan view of the nib section.
Figure 5 is a side elevational View of the holder.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the nib section.
Figure 7 is an end elevational view of the nib section.
With reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that I have designated the holder generally by the reference character 1, and the nib section generally by the reference character 2.
The holder 1 is formed from a blank of metal or other suitable material and is curved transversely and tapers toward'one end 3. At its widest end, the holder 1 is provided with a substantially V-shaped notch 4 and at the outer end of, the notch 4 is provided jections 5.
i The material from which the nibsection'2,
with a air of o ositel disposed prop pp y that holder 1 is .capabl'efof accommodating 1931. Serial No. 519,814.
On the under or concaved face thereof, the body of holder 1 'is provided with a pair of grooves 6 that extend inwardly from the notch 4 and at their ends converge toward one another as clearly suggested in the drawings.
In forming the holder in the manner ust described, preferably I employ substantially a V-shaped piece of metal designated generally by the reference character 7 welded-at its outer edges to the convex face of the holder3asat8.
The member 7 thus overlaps portions of the material from which the body 1 is made, and the overlapping portions cooperate to provide the groove6-6; 1 l g y 1 As is apparent the holder 1 is of such a Shape as to readily adapt itself, to the feed of a fountainpen or similar writing implement. The nib section 2 is formed from metal or'other suitable material and in. many respects resembles a conventional type of Spencerian pen nib although it is to be understood that the nib section 2 may be constructed in a man- ..ner similar to the stub type of nib or any other style or type as found desirable,"
. Th body of he nib section 2 is curved I transversely or is of substantially semi-cylindrical cross section as suggested inFi re 7 and tapers toward one end to provi e. the writing point 9, said end being split longitudinally as at 10 and inwardly from the split provided with the opening 11 all in th e usual manner. a
The nib section 2 tapers toward its opposite end to provide a pointed shank 1.2),the edges of which-are reduced, as at 13 for engagement with the rooves 6 to retain the nib. section 2 andhol v er .1 in assembled relation. For 1 further locking the nib section 2and holder 1 in assembled relation, the shank 12 adjacent its pointed end is providedwith aprotuberance 14 adapted to engage a seator recess 15 provided in the top of holder linwardly from notch 4.
and the holder 1 may be made, may be gold,
non-corrosive steel or any other suitable "metal.
From the foregoing then it will be apparent any particular type of nib section provided with a tapered shank, the edges of which are capable of being received within the groove 6 body portion along the'edges of said notch, and cooperating with corresponding portions of said body to provide grooves slidabl so that the nib section whether it be of the Spencerian type, stub type or the like embodying the features of the present invention, can be readily associated with the holder, so that as is obvious, when one desires a particular type of pen point, the entire pen point which consists usually of. thenib section and holder formed integrally one with the other need not be entirely dispensed with, it being necessary only to dispense with the particular pen point or nib and substitute therefor a pen point or nib of the desired type and assemble it with the holder 1 after which the assembled structure may be readily associated with the fountainpen or other writing instrument in a manner thought apparent.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes, fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein de scribed, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: i 1. A writingpen comprising in combination a nib section and a-holder section, said nib section having an integral longitudinally tapering shank, andsaid holder section provided with a pair of grooves extending in wardly' from one end of said holderand converging at their inner ends, said grooves being adapted to accommodate the edges of said shank. Y i f 2. A writing pen 'comprising in combination a nib section and a holder section, said nib' section having an integral longitudinally tapering shank, and said holder section provided with. a pair of grooves extending inwardly from one end of: said holder and converging at their inner ends, said grooves 'being adapted to accommodate the edges of 'said shank, additional means for securing said 'nib section and said holder section in assembled relation against longitudinal movement relative to one another.
j 3. A writing pen comprising in combination a nib sec'tion and a holder section, said f holder section having aconcaved inner face and a convexed outer face, and said holder section tapering toward one end, said nib section including a shank portionrhaving a concaved inner face and a convex outer face, said shank portiontapering toward one end of said nib section, said holder and said shank portion having cooperating means for detachably securing said nib section and 4 holder in assembled relation.
In combination with a pan nib having atapered shank portion, of a holder therefor including a body portion, having a notch exjtending inwardly from one end thereof, and i a strip of material secured to one face of the accommodating opposite edges of the sha portion of said nib.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature. 70
JOSEPH W. NEAL.
