UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM PARSONS, 'OF CLEVELAD, OHIO.
CAR-ooUPLme.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettera Patent No. 300,004, dated J' une 10, 1884. i Application filed October 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PARsoNs, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State uof Ohio, have invented new and useful Improve- Inents in Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplers, having special reference to those which are automatic or self-coupling, and is designed to facilitate the rapid and convenient making up of trains, and also to obviate all danger to human life from the necessity in those devices now in common use of standing between the cars to guide-the pin and link to their proper places.
The device is at once simple and efficient, and may be understood more fully from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a vertical section; Fig. 2, a plan view, and Fig. 3 a separate View of end of latch with lugs thereon.
A is the coupler-head, in which is the recess R. Set in this recess is the latch B, hung on a pin or bearing, O, to give the point G an upward and downward movement within the head.
E is an annular recess in the back part of head, to receive the round link U and allow it to have free movement without binding in any direction necessitated by the required movement of the link. The formation of this recess will be readily seen in Fig. 2.
L L are lugs upon opposite sides of the latch at its forward end, below the point C, and is lfor the purpose of bringing the link T, as shown at U V, Fig. 2, from any angle with the head to a direct line with the same. As the link rests upon these lugs a quick pressure uponthe pin D will depress the latch,
and if the link is set at an angle, as at U, it will be thrown upon the lugs, so that it will slide into place, balancing itself, and being left in the position shown at V and in Fig. 3, so that it leads out directly from the drawhead and meets the opposite draw-head of the next car at the proper angle to couple the cars. Any slight difference in height or position will be obviated by the beveled surface of the head where the link enters, thus guiding the link onto the latch and forcing it over the point C when it falls into place, and is held' from rising by the projection l?, the point C resting in the opening H. A coiled spring, N, depresses the eX- tremity of the latch to keep the point C in place, a projection, WV, being for the purpose of securing the spring from moving out of place. When the latch is depressed, the lugs L find free passage at either side in the slots F F, the latch taking the course indicated by the dotted lines M.
The pin D is for the purpose of guiding the link, as heretofore described, or for depressing the latch sufficiently to disengage the link and uncouple the car. This can be done on flat or platform cars by placing the foot on the point D; but from the ground this is accomplished by the lever I, which is hung at K, and, as will be readily seen, any raising or depressingof its outer end will depress or raise the pin, which rests on the latch at O.
S is any suitable draw-bar connecting the coupler with the car.A
The simplicity and efficiency of the device can be seen without further description.
I am aware that draw-bars with projections upon each side are not new for the purpose described, and I do not broadly claim such construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a car-coupler, the lugs L L, in coms bination with the annular recess E, the point P, and latch B, as and for the purposes set forth and described.
2. The combination of the head A, latch B, link T, pin D, and lever I, substantially as set forth, and for the purposes described.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a link and draw-head, of a latch, B, having tapering lugs L L, operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth and described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 29th day of September, 1883.
VILLIAM PARSONS.
