Description

United States Patent 2,996,547 o-PHENYLENE BIS (TRINI'IROETHYTJAMINE) Robert H. Saunders, West Chester, Pa., assignor, by mesne assignments, to the ,United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy I No Drawing. Filed Feb. 28, 19-52, Ser. No. 274,074 l Claim. (Cl.260-57-7) This invention relates to a new explosive compound, o-phenylene-bis (trinitroethylann'ne):
The new compound oiLthe' invention is an orange colored solid which isriaierately stable at room tempera tures.
It has properties making its utility as an explosive tea 4 sible, having an oxygen balance within permissible limitsand an impact sensitivity in the range of that of Patented Aug. 15, 1961 The compound was found to have the following formula:
The percentage composition calculated for C H N O is 27.6 percent carbon, 2.3 percent hydrogen, 25.8 percent nitrogen and the remainder oxygen. Analysis of the compound gave, 31.5 percent carbon, 2.2 percent hydrogen and 25.8 percent nitrogen.
The new compound has an oxygen balance of -48. Its melting point is 70 centigrade. It has an impact sensitiv'ity of 65 as determined by the Bureau of Mines impact machine, this figure being the distance in centimeters a 2 kilogram weight is required to fall in order to produce percent shots.
It is thus seen from the above that there has been provided a new compound having properties making its utility as an explosive feasible.
What is claimed is:
o-Phenylene-bis (trinitroethylamine).
