Description

2,996,544 BIS(p-IRINIIROETHYLAMENO) DIPHENYL- METHANE Robert H. Saunders, West Chester, Pa., assignor, by mesne assignments, to the United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy No Drawing. Filed Feb. 28, 1952, Ser. No. 274,073 1 Claim. (Cl. 260-570) This invention relates to a new explosive compound bis -(p-trinitroethylamino) diphenylmethane.
The new compound of the invention is an orange colored solid which is stable at room temperature. It has properties making its utility as an explosive feasible, having an oxygen balance within permissible limits and an impact sensitivity in the range of that of TNT.
The compound may be prepared by the condensation of diaminodiphenylmethane and trinitroethanol.
It is an object of the invention to provide a new explosive compound, bis (p-trinitroethylamino) diphenylmethane.
The invention is illustrated by the following example, but it is not limited thereto.
A slight excess of trinitroethanol is added to a methanol solution of diaminodiphenylmethane and the mixture chilled for two days. An orange colored precipitate was formed which was relatively stable at room temperature.
2,996,544 Patented Aug. 15, 196i ice The compound was found to have the following formula:
The percentage composition calculated for C H N O' is 39.0 percent carbon, 3.0 percent hydrogen, 21.4 percent nitrogen and the remainder oxygen. Analysis of the compound gave 40.0 percent carbon, 3.1 percent hydrogen and 21.6 percent nitrogen.
The new compound has an oxygen balance of 92. Its melting point is 78 centigrade. It has an impact sensitivity of 90 as. determined with the Bureau of Mines impact machine, this figure being the distance in centimete-rs a 2 kilogram weight was required to fall to produce percent shots. The compound gave a time of less than one minute at 82.2" centigrade with the potassium iodide-starch stability test.
It is thus seen from the above that there has been provided a new compound having properties making its utility as an explosive highly feasible.
What is claimed is:
Bis (ptrinitroethylamino) diphenylmethane.
