WITNESSES: INVENTOR: W71 W in MM #13- ATTORNEYS.
Miran drains A'llENT ALFRED \VILLARD BENSON, OF SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA.
WELL PiPE CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 299,331, dated May 27, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED \V. BnNsoN, of San Bernardino, San Bernardino county,
California, haveinvented a new and Improved 7 face of the ground, for the purpose of admitting any stream or streams of water, &c., that may have been passed in boring the well, whereby the yielding capacity of the well is increased.
The invention consists in a culterroller held in a forked piece, in which another forked piece is held which is provided with diagonal slots, through which the pintle of the cutter roller passes. Means are provided to raise or lower the inner forked part, thereby causing the cutter-roller to project more or less. The device is then worked up and down and cuts a slot in the pipe. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side View of my improved well-pipe cutter. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the swivel-joint; and Fig. 4. is an enlarged sectional plan view on the line as 00, Fig. 1. I
In the lower end of a forked piece, A, a sharp-edged cutting-roller, B, is pivoted, the pintle G of which roller passes through i11- clined slots D in the shanks of a forked piece, E, held between the shanks of the forked piece A. A screw, F, projecting upward from the top of the forked piece E, is screwed through aninternally-threaded sleeve, G, held to turn in the ring I-I, formed on the upper end of the forked piece A. On the upper end of the sleeve G a swivel piece, J, is screwed and fastened, on the upper end of which a screw, K, is formed for attaching the working-rod. In one edge of the forked piece E anti-friction rollers L are pivoted, and to the lower end of the forked piece E two bowsprings, M, are fastened.
The operation is as follows: The instrument is forced down in the well-pipe, and the springs M prevent the part E from turning. If the swivel part J is turned, the sleeve G is turned with it .and the part E is moved up ward, thereby causing the cutter-roller B to project from the edge of the part The entire device is then worked up and down, thereby causing the roller B to cut a vertical slot in the pipe, which slot may be made of any desired width by turning the device more or less on its longitudinal axis. After the desired slot or slots have been cut, the swivel part J is turned in the inverse direction to cause the part E to move downward, thereby withdrawing the cutting-roller in between the shanks of the part A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a well-pipe cutter, the combination, with the forked part A, of the forked part E within it, the eutter'roller B, pivoted in the lower part of the part A, the pintle 0, passing through diagonal slots D in the part E, and of means for adjusting the part E higher or lower in the part A, substantially as herein shown and'described.
2. In a well-pipe cutter, the combination, with the forked part A, of the forked part E within it, the cutter-roller B in the lower end of the part A, thepintle of the roller passing through diagonal slotsD in the part E, means for adjusting the part E higher or lower in the part A, and of the springs M on the lower end of the part E, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a well-pipe cutter, the combination, with the forked part A, of the forked part E, having diagonal slots D, the cutter-roller B, held in the part A, the springs M on the lower end of the part E, and the rollers Lon the part E, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a well-pipe cutter, the combination, with the forked part A, of the forked part E within the same, and provided with diagonal slots D, the cutter-roller B in the lower end of the part A, the internally-threaded sleeve G, held to turn in the upper end of the part A, and of the swivel J, secured to the sleeve G, substantially as herein shown and described.
