Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
HIRAM PITCHER, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND H. AND Gr. O. TROWBRIDGE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUGERS. l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,076,` dated March 26, 1872.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM PITCHER, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Auger- Bits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improvement applied to an ordinary auger; and Fig. 2, a perspective view thereof, attached as aforesaid.
Similar letters of reference in both figures refer to like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in auger-bits; and it consists in constructing one of the terminal edges or lips with a straight cutting surface, and the other with a curved lip, having its extremity or lower edge projecting inwardly toward the screw portion or point of the auger, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to an auger, the whole of which is of ordinary construction, saving that portion thereof termed the bit, which is constructed .as hereinafter described. The lip B ot' the bit is constructed with a straight cutting surface or edge, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, and the lip C is curved in such a manner as that its lower edge is caused to project inwardly toward the screw portion or point of the bit, as distinctly shown in both figures of the drawing.
By so constructing the bit the opera-tion of boring and the removing of the particles of wood cut by the boring otl the wood are facilitated, as will be more fully illustrated in the practical operation ofthe implement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat.- ent, is-
The auger-bit herein described, having a lip, C, curved to project inwardly toward the point or screw portion thereof, substantially as specied.
In testimonywhereof I have hereunto signed my name this 26th day August, A.. D. 1871, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HIRAM PITCHER.
Witnesses:
GEORGE T. TROWBRIDGE, C. D. ANDREWS.
