HOLLOW AUGER. 7
Patented Dec. 13, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE. I
WILLIAM BRADFORD, OF BROOKPORT, NEW YORK.
HOLLOW AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,773, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed August '7, 1886.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRADFORD, of Brockport, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hollow Angers; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification.
My improvement relates to devices for cutting tenons on spokes and for similar uses; and it consists in the following construction and arrangement:
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a hollow auger, showing myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a front end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section in line at x of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section in liney y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5'is a view of the end of a spoke with a tenon cut thereon by the auger.
A indicates the stock of the auger, which is hollow and of usual form.
B is a lateral wing cast on one side of the same for the reception of the cutter, and B is an outer vertical flange to the wing.
My improvement is as follows:
0 is a cutter of right-angled form in crosssection and having two cutting-edges, a b, the outer vertical edge, a, standing in front of the head of the auger and cutting the square shoulder of the tenon, while the horizontal edge I) rests horizontally on top of the wing B, and
serves as the cutter for trimming and smoothing the sides of the tenon after the shoulder has been out. Its edges rest in a throat, c, in the side of the auger, which gives clearance to the shavings. The cutter is attached to the wing B by means of aset-screw,d,which passes through aslot, f, of the cutter, that stands crosswise of the auger. This allowsmovement of the cutter in and out to cut to greater or less depths. g is a set-screw that passes through the flange B and bears against the outer edge of. the cutter and near the rear corner. It stands diagonal from the setscrew d.
D is a wedge-shaped gib provided with an inclined slot, K, through which passes a set- Serial No. 210,256. (No model.)
screw, m, securing it to the wing B, one edge of said gib bearing against the rear side of the cutter and holding it in place.
By the construction above described one right-angled cutter serves the double purpose To adjust the cutter inward to cut deeper the set-screw d is simply loosened and the out ter moved up to fit the size of the auger. To adjust it forward so that the cutter will cut deeper into the shoulder of the tenon'the setscrew d is loosened,'the gib D is drawn back to loosen the cutter, and the set-screw g is turned up, which, acting on the rear corner of the cutter, causes it to swing out in front; The setscrew d and gib D are then clamped in place. It will be seen that both edges a b may be adj nsted together by turning up the set-screw g, and that the set-screw d and gib D secure the cutter fast in any position.
Having described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a hollow anger, the combination, with the stock of the cutter 0, provided with the two right-angled cutting-edges a b,the set-screw 01, passing through the cutter and securing it to the wing of the stock, the set-screw 9, arranged diagonally of the screw (1 and bearing against the corner of the cutter, and the wedge-shaped gib D and set-screw m, all arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my namein the presence of two subscribing witmesses.
WILLIAM BRADFORD.
