To all 'iuiwm'z't may concern V J i Be it known thatI, ELMER S. SHIMER,a citizen of the United States,"residing at Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvanimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in OuttenHeads, ofwhich the "following is aspecification. V ,7, i
My invention relates to an improvement in cutter-heads, and the object isto provide an assemblage of parts wherebythecutting knife and holding devices shall be held rigs idly and in compact arrangement, thereby permitting the use of large number of holding devices in a single cutter-head flange when desired by the trade. Z 3 f i With the foregoing object; in view, this in- VGIltlOIL comprises a cutter-head flange having the required number-of bit-seats cut transversely in the flange, in connection with knives or bits held tangentially in said seats, and a clamping block, one side of which is adapted to engage a knife or hit, and the other with the adjacent wall of the bit seat having a transversely-disposed tapering orifice formed partly in the block and in the opposite wall of the bit seat, a tapering bolt fitted to said tapering orifice and keyed to the cutter head flange in a manner to permit it to move endwise, but preclude its turning, and a nut adapted to turn on the bolt to tighten the same in the orifice and clamp the bit or knife in its seat.
My present invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the cutter-head, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 1, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of the knife or bit, the clamping, block, and the bolt respectively.
The numeral 1 represents the hub, and 2, the flange of a cutter-head. The flange is provided with one OI'ZIIIOI'G recesses constituting bit seats 3, 3, and therear edgeof said bit seats are disposed approximately snugly against the is drawn tight,
tangentially to the hub, and a portion of said .walls are transversely corrugated as at 4.,
A bolt 8, one end of which is screwthreaded, and the main portion of which is in the form of a taper to correspond with the orifices formed partly in the clampingblock and partly in the opposite Wall of the bit seat, is provided with a key-way 9 adapted to receive a lug 10 in the portion of the orifice in the flange to permit the bolt to move endwise and prevent its turning axially, and a nut 11 having a shoulder or collar 12 on one side screws on the thread of the bolt, and, when tightened, the collar or shoulder bears on the'fiange or clamping block to tighten the'parts and holdthem rigidly in place. When the parts thus described are put into position, and the nut the effect upon the block is that it is pressed up against the round collar of the nut, but by continuing to turn the nut, the clamping block will again retreat to its position until the collar of the nut has its bearing against the side of the solid semi-circular orifice, which lines up the parts. As the nut is drawn up, and the taper bolt is drawn into its two semi-circular openings, the space between the clamping block and the adjacent wall of the bit The knife or hit '5 is provided with cor to firmly hold the knife on the taper bolt and wedge in the manner described.
Referring again to the'clamping block, it
will be observed that it has a projection at 13 adjacent to the knife or bit, which serves to turn the chip, and may be termed a chip breaker. V
It is clear that the knife or bit and clamping block correspond in width to that of the flange, so that their outer surfaces are flush with the opposite surface of the flange when held in place. It will also be understood that the knife or hit is capable of being adjusted in and out to suit the requirements, and therparts may be easily assembled or separated, and when in place are quickly fastened and held rigidly against accidental displacement.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for culty or at the expense of weakening any part.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a cutter-headflange having a bit-seat cut in i Periphery, one
side of which is constructed and adapted with thegroove of the bit-seat, and providedont-he outer edge with achip-breaker, and a bolt having a tapering portion which enters the tapering groove of the bit-seat and clamping-block, means .to prevent the bolt from'turning, and means for drawing the bolt endwise to force the clamping block rigidly against theknife'or bit whereby to hold the latter securely between itand the opposite wall of the bit-seat.
In testimony whereof I aflixuny signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
